1 Robeson High School Technology Education Department Course Title: Computer Information Technology Course Description: Computer Information Technology enhances and expands the knowledge, skills, and experience of beginning students. This course emphasizes the basics of using a computer and its applications. Students master skills necessary for tasks that include, but are not limited to, word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, and communication. The skill set learned will enable students to utilize technology in their daily academic lives and improve performance in core curriculum courses fulfilling state standards while becoming life-long learners. Course Objectives: Demonstrate a mastery of basic computer system functions and an understanding of various computer components as they pertain to that system. Expand proper keyboarding techniques to become proficient touch typists Demonstrate mastery of computer software packages that include word processing, spreadsheets, and computer-generated graphics to accomplish a variety of subject area tasks. Use computer skills and demonstrate proper techniques (including the use of the internet) to access, manipulate, and produce reports, documents and presentations. Students fulfill national technology standards on basic operation and concepts, using technology productivity tools, communication tools, research tools, and problem-solving and decision-making tools. Course Overview: Keyboarding Intense focus for 2 weeks and then continued the entire school year The Internet and Computer Systems 6 weeks Word processing 15 weeks PowerPoint Presentations 9 weeks Excel Spreadsheets 8 weeks Evaluation Criteria: ASSIGNMENT CATEGORY % OF GRADE GRADE SCALE Student Projects & Critical Thinking Exercises 30% %= A Daily Lessons and Exercises 30% 89-80% = B Typing Lessons and Tests 20% 79-70% = C Periodic Assessments 10% 69-60% = D Vocabulary Journal & Quizzes 10% 59-0% = F SEMESTER TOTAL 100% 1

2 Course Assignment Descriptions Student Projects = 30% of overall grade Student projects are individual assignments that test the student s knowledge of each program. At the end of each unit (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the student will complete a project which is a summative assessment of what was covered within each unit. These projects are the most important element to students' overall grades as they require demonstration and application of acquired knowledge. Daily Lessons and Exercises = 30% of overall grade Our daily routine consists of using a textbook that walks the students though each office application pointing out the different features within. This textbook is a step-by-step manual that is relatively easy to follow and instructs the students on how each application works. These assignments comprise the bulk of the class material. Typing Tests = 20% of overall grade Daily keyboarding practice is mandatory. Students do not have to be proficient typists when they enter the class but should be when they exit. The last typing test utilizes all keys and symbols on the keyboard as well as punctuation and capitalization to test students' complete skill set. The semester goal is for students to surpass 35wpm while using proper keyboarding technique. Keyboarding is an essential skill used in all classes to complete papers, so it is imperative students learn as early as possible how to type. Keyboarding practice is suggested as daily homework. Periodic Assessments = 10% of overall grade This category consists of all the pre-tests and post-tests for each quarter as well as the 3- week assessments taken between each pre and post-test. Students are assessed on their prior knowledge and then graded based upon their growth over the course of each quarter. Vocabulary Journal = 10% of overall grade Within the world of computers comes a vast amount of technical vocabulary which students must learn to fully comprehend information technology. Students will be given weekly or biweekly vocabulary lists which will be kept in a digital journal for future reference. Students research the definitions and record these in their journals. Students will then have a resource when needed. 2

Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students: a. plan strategies to guide inquiry. b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. d. process data and report results. 4. Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving & Decision-Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students: a. identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation. b. plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project. c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. d. use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students: a. advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology. b. exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. c. demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning. d. exhibit leadership for digital citizenship. 6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems and operations. Students: a. understand and use technology systems. b. select and use applications effectively and productively. c. troubleshoot systems and applications. d. transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies.
