1 The Intensive English Program has the following levels: Intensive English Program PROFICIENCY SCALE Level 1 is the elementary level for students with very basic or elementary knowledge of English grammar, reading, listening/speaking and writing Level 2 is the pre- intermediate level for students with some knowledge of basic English grammar, reading, listening/speaking, and writing Level 3 is the intermediate 1 level for students who have control of basic English grammar, reading, listening/speaking and writing Level 4- is the intermediate 2 level for students who have control of basic English grammar, reading, listening/speaking and writing Level 5 is the advanced 1 level for students who have control of intermediate English grammar, reading, listening/speaking and writing and some knowledge of advanced English language skills Level 6 is the academic preparation course for students who have control of advanced English grammar, reading, listening/speaking and writing and is for pre- academic students. 1
2 Interpretation of Proficiency Scale By the end of each course, students will be able to: Reading and Writing/Grammar* Listening and Speaking L1 - elementary L2 pre- intermediate Read or listen to a simple passage or conversation and identify the topic, answer both orally and in writing objective and brief answer questions about details and basic pronoun reference Read or listen to a basic passage or conversation and identify the topic and main idea, answer orally and in writing objective and brief answer questions about details, basic pronoun reference and inference Answer and produce questions about daily activities and personal information(orally and in writing) using accurate question and sentence structure, correct basic grammar and mechanics Answer and produce questions (orally and in writing) about daily activities and provide personal information using accurate question and sentence structure, correct basic grammar and mechanics in sentences and basic paragraphs Vocabulary Understand, use and spell targeted vocabulary which focuses on daily activities and providing personal information Understand, use and spell targeted vocabulary which focuses on daily activities and providing personal information *Grammar Structures Simple present and present continuous with focus on be verb; forming and responding to questions; subject pronouns, possessive adjectives, demonstrative adjectives and pronouns; simple sentence structure and parts of speech; prepositions of place and time, common and proper nouns, and there is/are Contrast simple present and present continuous; use frequency adverbs, adverbs of manner, object pronouns, count and non- count nouns and quantifiers, simple past regular and some irregular verbs, simple, compound and complex sentences and imperatives, form and respond to questions 2
3 By the end of each course, students will be able to: Reading Composition Structure Listening and Speaking L3 intermediate 1 Read simplified academic texts and answer questions about the main idea and details, make basic inferences, guess the meaning of vocabulary in context, identify pronoun referents, demonstrate understanding of specific affixes and targeted vocabulary, communicate ideas about topics studied orally and in writing and recognize an effective summary Write paragraphs under time constraints using effective paragraph organization and logical content with a variety of sentence structures, accurate grammar, mechanics and vocabulary; demonstrate knowledge of pre- writing techniques, and editing and revising skills. Paragraphs topics are personal or familiar to the student. Demonstrate understanding of the form, meaning and use of past, present and future verb tenses in sentences and questions and produce these in simple, compound and complex sentences; use basic gerunds and infinitives and enough/too/ too much/too many Listen to short lectures on simplified academic topics and take effective notes which can be used to answer comprehensive questions; spell, use and understand targeted vocabulary; orally present information on personal topics using clear pronunciation and good control of grammar and vocabulary studied 3
