1 Scanning Steps Step 1 - Place the original image/ text face down in the scanner. Step 2 - Open the scanning software either by clicking the HP Precisionscan Pro Software icon on the desktop or alternatively press the Scan button on the front of the scanner. The following screen should now be displayed. The image/text should now be displayed on the right hand side of the screen. Step 3 - Move your mouse over the image and when the mouse pointer changes to a black cross click and drag with the left mouse button to draw a rectangular box around the selection. 1

2 Scanning Steps Step 4 Selecting the Output - The HP scanning software will automatically select the best output type based on your image/text. Step 5 Saving your scanned image - to either the floppy or hard drive ensuring you select the correct file type. * TIFF for printed material. * JPEG for sending images via or placing on a Web Page. If you require to print your image - click on the Print button. To view your image you will need to open up the Imaging software. From the Start menu choose Programs /Accessories / Imaging. Click File/Open and select your image from either the hard or floppy drive. 2

3 Scanning Tips Quick Scanning Buttons Before you start scanning consider what your scan will be used for, as this will determine the resolution and file type. Scans to button - scans the image to HP scanning software where any adjustments can be made. Always start with a good quality picture, which has good lighting and contrast. Scan only the detail that is required. This will reduce the size. Scan the image in its original orientation. Jpeg extensions are best used for images sent via or that will be used in a Web page. Tiff extensions are best used for printed material. When scanning text select Editable Text from the output type drop down list box. Cancel button - cancels the scan in progress. Copy button - first choose the amount of copies required by pressing the - + buttons next to the copy button. Then press the copy button. This will bring up the copy dialogue box - select the copy button to print out your copy directly to the printer. *Try to keep the file size of scanned images down to under 100kb as most Web based s limit your space. 3

4 Resolution A digital image can be broken down into pixels with each pixel representing a single colour and value. Image resolution refers to the number of pixels per square inch (ppi). Not to be confused with dots per inch (dpi) which is a measurement describing the way the image is printed, scanned or shown on a monitor. The golden rule when printing is to use the highest bit depth possible. When viewing an image on-screen an 8 - bit depth will be adequate. The following table will give you an idea when you should apply different bit scans for varying colours. 5 ing Your Scanned Images First save your image/text by clicking the Save icon giving your image an appropriate name. Next click the arrow to reveal the drop down list, choose the JPG format when ing or using photos for a web page. The JPG format will compress the file into a smaller file size. Click on the Save button. Open your software and compose a new as normal. Add the image as an attachment. Click the Attachment button and browse explorer to find your image file. Click the Add button, the file name should now appear in the box. Click the OK button and you will be returned to your . Continue to send your as normal. 5
