FRAMED CABINETRY CARE AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS The final appearance of your kitchen will depend, to a great degree, on the care used in installation. The best cabinets can be made to look and function poorly by improper installation. Please use the following installation tips to assure a quality installation of your new cabinetry. Before Starting Before starting your installation, familiarize yourself with the layout and the cabinets to be installed. For example, verify where cabinets with finished ends go. You may have two 18 wide base cabinets, one with a finished end and one without. Check all measurements and mark locations on the wall and/or floor. Check the wall, floor, and ceiling/soffit to be sure they are level and plumb. Make provisions for any unevenness in floors and walls with the use of shims. The finest houses do not have perfectly straight walls or square corners, which presents one of the greatest difficulties in installing factory engineered cabinetry. Attempting to hang cabinets on crooked walls or force them into corners that are not square will result in racking and misalignment of the doors. Recommended Tools Tape Measure 4 Carpenter s Level Framing Square Miter Saw Finish Hammer Chalk Line Safety Glasses C-Clamps or Parallel Clamps Bees Wax/Parafin Screwdrivers Multi-Purpose Adhesive Drill Bit Set Screw Bits Counter Sink Drill Bit Finish or Brad Nails Shims Stud Finder Pencil Drill Required Screws CAUTION: Do not use flat head sheetrock screws for cabinet installation. # 10 x 2-1/2 installation screws are provided for use on wood studs. Installation screws for use on steel studs must be obtained locally. 1
Effects of Climate Wood is affected by moisture. Excess humidity can result in warpage, swelling, and possible damage to the finish of the cabinets. Likewise, the lack of sufficient humidity, particularly during the winter, may produce damage such as loose joints, warpage and checking. Preventative measures should be taken to control humidity during all seasons. A humidity level of approximately 35% is recommended. Warping of wood cabinet doors due to low humidity during winter months is a common condition that usually will correct itself when the humidity in the home returns to normal. Experience has shown that any tendency for cabinet doors to warp during the first heating season will usually not recur the second year. Leave your cabinet doors open for a few days after installation to allow both sides of the doors to adjust to your climate. Preparation 1. STUD LOCATION Locate the studs with a stud finder and mark their location on the walls. 2. MEASUREMENT Using a level, find the high point of the floor in the area that the cabinetry is to be installed. At the high point in the floor, measure up 34-1/2 for base cabinet height and 84, 90, 93 or 96 for overall installation height, and mark these points on the wall. Draw a horizontal level line on the wall through these points along the length of the walls that will be receiving cabinets. CAUTION: Make sure you have accounted for new flooring height and any ceiling/soffit repair or replacement. This will affect the final placement of the cabinets. It is recommended that flooring be in place and covered/protected during installation 3. CABINET PREPARATION Before installing the cabinets, remove all doors and drawers. Secondly, remove any protective skids from the bottom of the base, tall and vanity cabinets and the tops of the wall cabinets CAUTION should be exercised when removing skids from cabinets. Please remove the skids end to end as opposed to crossways to prevent the chance of chipping cabinet ends. PULL THE STAPLES... don t drive them in. For cabinets that include a protective film or peel coat (i.e. Thermofoil), the peel coat should be left in place until the installation is complete. These cabinets are manufactured with a nominal 1/16 scribe at the back. This can be removed to adjust for walls that are not plumb. Normally your installation should begin in one corner. If your room contains a square, curved or diagonal corner cabinet, start installation with that cabinet. If a blind cabinet is used, installation should start at the opposite end of the wall. This blind cabinet contains a wide intermediate stile, and may be pulled from the corner as much as 3 if needed. The cabinet may not need to be pulled at all. 2
Wall Cabinet Installation 1. Mark wall stud locations on the inside back of the wall cabinet and drill a 3/16 pilot hole located a minimum of 3 away from cabinet top and/or bottom. CAUTION: Screws should not be installed through 1-1/8 top or bottom tabs of wall cabinet back as this will void the warranty. 2. Hold wall cabinet up to the line at wall cabinet height and attach cabinet to wall by screwing #10 x 2-1/2 installation screws (provided for use on wood studs) through pilot holes into studs, being certain they are long enough to go into the studs at least 1. In some instances, the stud location may be such that a toggle bolt is necessary. Four (4) #10 x 2-1/2 truss head screws are included for installation of each cabinet. CAUTION: The use of tapered, flat head (sheet rock type) screws will void the warranty. See Required Screws for more information. Tighten screws only enough to hold the cabinet in place. 3. We recommend that individual cabinets be attached to each other at their face frame stiles using two screws. Drill a 3/16 hole through the width of the stile near the top and bottom of the first cabinet. Carefully align the adjoining cabinet and drill through the first hole with a 9/64 bit into the stile of the second cabinet. Drill only deep enough to ensure a good bite, approximately 5/8. 4. When all cabinets are properly aligned to mounting height, horizontally level, vertically plumb, and attached to each other flush at bottom and front, then fully tighten screws. Base Cabinet Installation 1. Hold base cabinet up to line at base cabinet height. Use shims to hold cabinet to line where necessary. 2. Mark wall stud locations on the inside back of base cabinet and drill 3/16 pilot holes through cabinet back. 3. Attach cabinet to the wall by screwing #10 x 2-1/2 installation screws (provided for use on wood studs) through cabinet back into wall studs. Tighten only enough to hold cabinet in place. 4. When all cabinets are properly aligned to mounting height, horizontally level, vertically plumb, and attached to each other flush at top and front then fully tighten screws. 3
Drawer Front 1. Drawer fronts are attached with washer head screws through oversized holes in the drawer box front. This allows for the adjustment of the drawer front in four directions. 2. With a hand screwdriver, loosen screws in the front of the drawer box just enough for drawer front to move. Align drawer front with adjacent drawers and doors, and then retighten screws. (A power screwdriver is not recommended.) Installation Tip: For decorative hardware, we suggest installations screws be drilled through the drawer front and the drawer box. CAUTION: All drawer adjustments must be done before installation of decorative hardware. Final door and drawer adjustments are the responsibility of the field installation crew. Inset Cabinetry Installation Inset doors and drawer fronts are flush with the face frames; they are inset into the face frame. Maintaining a relatively consistent space around and between butt doors is achieved by the integrity of the cabinet construction and installation. INSET INSTALLATION NOTES Do not remove doors and drawers from cabinet for installation. CAUTION: Cabinets must not be racked in any way. Shim walls and floors so cabinets are level and plumb when fastened. Check cabinet for squareness when fastening, visually monitoring door/drawer front reveals in frame opening. Doors with a barrel hinge are adjustable in two directions; horizontally and vertically. Doors with a concealed hinge are adjustable in three directions; horizontally, vertically and front-to-back. CAUTION: Inset door final adjustment for proper spacing around entire door or drawer front shall be the responsibility of the field installation crew. To fasten the stiles of two inset face frame cabinets together, 2 flathead screws (counter sunk) must be used. (Not supplied by Dura Supreme.) CLOSING MECHANISM 1. Barrel hinge operate/swing freely and magnets are used to hold doors closed. Two (2) magnets are used on cabinets over 30 high, installed both top and bottom. Wall cabinets 30 and shorter will have one (1) magnet only, installed in the top of each door opening. 2. Concealed hinge is self-closing (spring-loaded) to hold doors closed. Two (2) door stops are used on cabinets over 30 high, installed both top and bottom. Wall cabinets 30 and shorter will have one (1) door stop only, installed in the top of each door opening. 4
Care of Your New Cabinetry CABINETRY FINISH The finish on your cabinetry is a two-coat clear finish for household furniture and cabinetry. It has a durable coating that has extreme resistance to marring, abrasion, water, alcohol, detergents, ordinary household liquids, etc. WOOD SURFACES Under normal use, your cabinetry should be cleaned at least once annually. We recommend that non-silicone polishes be applied with a soft lint-free cloth going with the grain of the wood. A product such as Liquid Gold is readily available and has been used successfully in the care of kitchen cabinets and furniture. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaners, or abrasive pads to clean your cabinetry, since they will dull or harm the finish. When necessary, this finish may be wiped with a clean damp soft cloth using a mild soap solution, wiped with clear water and dried with a soft, clean cloth. USE CAUTION IN CLEANING CABINETRY Water is the most harmful substance for cabinetry and furniture finishes. Spills should be wiped up immediately with a clean cloth, as well as any other type of moisture that may affect the cabinetry finish. By exercising the minimal care described in this brochure, your cabinetry will provide you with years of service and enjoyment. CABINET INTERIORS The interior of this cabinetry is highly resistant to surface abrasion and most common household occurrences. Interiors are melamine with a wood grain print. (Cabinets with plywood construction have a maple interior with a durable topcoat.) Both interiors are easy to care for and to clean using a soft cloth or sponge moistened with pure soap suds and wiped dry with a soft cloth. THERMOFOIL DOORS The surface of the doors, which is a tough, highly abrasive-resistant laminate, is easily cleaned with a clean damp cloth or sponge moistened with a mild soap, wiped with clear water and dried with a soft, clean cloth. WOOD CHARACTERISTICS The beauty of real wood is created by the infinite variations of grain texture and color. The variations in the minerals and acids in the soil where the tree was grown have an effect on the final wood and how it reacts to finishes. These variations in graining and color that are inherent in the wood are to be considered acceptable. As wood ages, there is an imperceptible color change, called mellowing, that is always occurring. After a year s time, the color difference from when the wood was new may be significant. Exposure to light, heat and other external elements (i.e., cigarette/cooking smoke) also causes wood to change color slightly. Like grain and color variations, mellowing is due to a natural process and is not to be considered a reason for replacement. 5
Formaldehyde Statement As a manufacturing corporation, we are required that homeowners be advised of any product used that contains formaldehyde. Your cabinetry has been assembled using products that may emit formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is emitted from particleboard, plywood, and medium density fiberboard (MDF) because of being manufactured using urea formaldehyde resins and adhesives. The finish topcoats also have trace amounts of formaldehyde in them. The amount of formaldehyde emissions diminishes over time. Some people are more sensitive to formaldehyde and may notice some irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat with sneezing, coughing, headaches, shortness of breath, chest or stomach pains. Children under the age of two, elderly people, and people with breathing problems or allergies may have more difficulty. If you have questions about problems you may have with formaldehyde, consult a doctor. Our cabinetry has been tested for formaldehyde emissions by an independent testing laboratory. All cabinets tested were within OSHA-NIOSH and state requirements. Compliant with the California Air Resource Board Phase I and Phase II requirements. Lifetime Limited Warranty We warrant to the original consumer purchaser of our products that, for as long as they own their home where our products are initially installed, our products will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal home use and service at the original site of installation. This warranty is only applicable to our products used in residential applications within the United States and the Province of Ontario, Canada and is not transferable to subsequent owners. Our obligation under this warranty shall be limited to the repair or replacement of any part or parts of our products which may prove to be defective under normal home use and service within the warranty period, and which our examination shall disclose to our satisfaction to be defective. This warranty does not apply to the mellowing and aging of wood products due to photo degradation to its finished appearance (i.e., the effect of natural and artificial light to woods and finishes), variation in the wood grain or color, fading or visible cracking around joint areas. This warranty does not cover countertops, appliances, plumbing fixtures, etc. or the costs and expenses, including labor, incurred in removing or installing our products and related components. This warranty shall not apply to the effects of normal wear and tear or any product or part thereof which has been subject to accident, alteration, acts of God, abuse, misuse, improper installation, improper storage, excessive humidity or fluctuations in humidity, excessive exposure to direct sunlight, exposure to moisture or exposure to extreme temperatures. We make no warranty whatsoever with respect to accessories or parts not supplied or manufactured by us. THIS WARRANTY IS EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR USE AND OF ALL OTHER OBLIGATIONS OR LIABILITIES ON OUR PART. WE NEITHER ASSUME, NOR AUTHORIZE ANY OTHER PERSON, INCLUDING OUR SALES REPRESENTATIVES, DEALERS AND DISTRIBUTORS, TO EXTEND OR ASSUME FOR US ANY OTHER WARRANTY, CONDITION OR LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH THE SALE OF OUR PRODUCTS. THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS WILL BE THE PURCHASER S EXCLUSIVE REMEDY AND THE PURCHASER HEREBY WAIVES ALL OTHER REMEDIES, WARRANTIES, CONDITIONS, GUARANTEES, AND/OR LIABILITIES (EXPRESS OR IMPLIED) ARISING BY LAW OF OTHERWISE, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS PROVIDED FOR IN THE SALE OF GOODS ACT ONTARIO, AND ALL CLAIMS AGAINST THE MANUFACTURER FOR CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES. The manufacturer reserves the right to alter design, specifications and material without obligation to make similar changes to products previously manufactured. If a warranty claim is filed after a style is no longer being manufactured by the manufacturer, the manufacturer reserves the right to honor the warranty by either replacing the affected component with a new component of the same style, or replacing the affected component and any other components in the residential application to achieve a uniform appearance with a similar and comparable product style of the original purchased style. If components are replaced, the manufacturer cannot guarantee that the finish of these replacements will exactly match the finish and appearance of the components in the residential application. This is due to the changes that occur during the wood s natural aging process, affecting its color and grain. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights, which vary from state to state and province to province. Some states or provinces may not allow the exclusion or limitation of consequential or incidental damages, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. To file a warranty claim, contact your local dealer where the cabinetry was originally purchased to arrange for inspection of products. A dated receipt as proof of purchase is required to obtain benefits from this warranty. The authorized dealer will obtain the information necessary to make a claim decision and forward to the manufacturer for action on the claim. Warranty claims must include a complete description of how the defect occurred. 3OO Dura Drive Howard Lake, MN
