FIFA research on Football Turf Dr Eric Harrison, FIFA consultant for football turf 6 March 2012

Agenda Medical and play-related research 1. The game on football turf 2. Injuries on football turf 3. Physiology and biomechanics on football turf 4. Conclusion and next steps

Football Turf Research Does the game change on Football Turf? Are there more injuries on Football Turf? Does a player interact with different playing surfaces in different ways?

Football Turf Research 2011

Football Turf Research Does the game change on Football Turf? Conclusion Technical data (Playing patterns, positions, passing movements) are not significantly different Physical data (runs, high intensity movement, etc.) shows no evidence of differences

Football Turf Research Does the game change on Football Turf? Are there more injuries on Football Turf? Does a player interact with different playing surfaces in different ways?

Football Turf Research Are there more injuries on Football Turf? F-MARC Database Over 10,000 football injuries analyzed and documented Includes comparisons of last six FIFA U-17

Football Turf and Competitions F-Marc FIFA U17 World Cup Analysis Conclusion No significant difference in number and types of injuries

Football Turf Research F-Marc FIFA U20 World Cup Analysis Canada 2007 Egypt 2009 Natural Turf Football Turf Natural Turf Football Turf (23 matches) (29 matches) (45 matches) (7 matches) All Injuries (per match) Time-Loss Injuries (per match) Conclusion No significant difference in number and types of injuries

UEFA Study 2006 Published in British Journal for Sports Medicine: Risk of injury in elite football played on artificial turf versus natural grass: a prospective two-cohort study J Ekstrand, T Timpka, M Hägglund Almost 500 professional players monitored Results: Overall risk of injury on artificial turf is not higher Skin burns no longer a problem Indications that there are more ankle injuries on artificial turf Indications of fewer muscle injuries on artificial turf

Football Turf Research Does the game change on Football Turf? Are there more injuries on Football Turf? Does a player interact with different playing surfaces in different ways?

Biomechanics and Physiology Does a player interact with different playing surfaces in different ways? Kicking Dynamics Ankle Dynamics Fatigue

Biomechanics and Physiology Pitches for analysis Oslo Amsterdam Valenci a Grass Football Turf Bislett Stadium Lillestrøm Sportsklubb (LSK) Valhall Arena KNVB pitch Ajax 1st team training pitch De Teokmest Valencia CF pitch 3 Valencia CF pitch 4 Dr Lluch Facility

Ankle Dynamics Ankle Dynamics No difference BOOT-PITCH INTERACTION DURING A RAPID (V-CUT) TURNING MANOEUVRE 19 semi-pro players 80% approach and maximal exit speed Foot and lower leg movements captured at high-speed (500 Hz). - Turn time - Exit speed - Slip pattern Conclusions Averaging across the group there appears to be no major differences in turning performance across the various natural and football turf pitches. Maximum traction during the initial landing phase was similar between all pitches except for a soft natural turf pitch in Holland.

Kicking Dynamics Kicking Dynamics No difference Testing Parameters Kicking foot angle Pronation of the standing foot Backwards inclination of the standing leg Control Parameters (test standardisation) run up velocity run up direction Monitor Parameters (for protocol) braking impulse in run up kicking velocity Conclusions No statistical difference in kicking foot angle, pronation of the standing foot and backward inclination of the standing leg between natural and Football Turf Climatic influence on natural turf seems bigger than differences between Football Turf and natural turf

Ankle Dynamics Fatigue No difference Testing Parameters On both surfaces, 17 players performed a ~95- minute controlled football simulation To match the movements and stresses in football Monitor Parameters Variables assessed through (6 x ~16-min) sets Physiological responses (heart rate, blood lactate) Performance measures (performance of sprints, turns and jumps) Conclusions The match simulation accurately simulates the demands of football for heart rate, lactate and fatigue But playing surface has no additional effect on heart rate or blood lactate The development of fatigue is not influenced by playing surface Sprint and cutting performance mostly faster on Football Turf

Football Turf Research: Summary Conclusions Does the game change on Football Turf? No significant differences in the objective ProZone data Are there more injuries on Football Turf? Number and Types of injuries between natural and football turf is not significantly different. Does a player interact with different playing surfaces in different ways? No evidence that playing surface increases physiological stresses. Football Turf may allow for faster speeds in some movements No difference No difference No difference

Football Turf Research Caveats Outlook Does the game change on Football Turf? Difference between climatic regions exist Difficulty in defining good natural turf and good football turf There still seems to be a difference! Player/coaches perception as basis for further research programmes Research 2012 (U17 in Azerbaijan) to take this into account

Agenda Medical and play-related research 1. The game on football turf 2. Injuries on football turf 3. Physiology and biomechanics on football turf 4. Conclusion, caveats and next steps

Football Turf Research: conclusions Caveats Difference between climatic regions exist Difficulty in defining good natural turf and good football turf Year Study Outome Patterns of play (Prozone) Repeatedly no difference 2007 & 2012* Injury patterns No difference 2010 Biomechanics & kicking dynamics No difference 2010 Kicking dynamics No difference 2010 Physiology & fatigue No difference

Football Turf Research: conclusions FIFA addressed those issues that were deemed problematic Studies show that there should be no difference But: players still seem to feel that there is one! Approach : Identify what the players deem to be issues Player Perception Survey: systematic questions to 1200 players Feedback from professional coaches Input from other sports governing bodies With this, FIFA is looking to find test methods that reflect these needs
