2 Work Programme 2009: Introductory remarks The Work Programme 2009 includes the activities for which contracts (Grants or Procurements) are planned to be signed in 2009; In addition, priority 2 items are included in this Work Programme and they could be launched in 2009, but committed against the 2010 budget. These activities are marked as priority (2) in this presentation; Some activities are subject to the approval of the ITER Task Agreement (ITA). Slide 2
3 WBS 1.1 MAGNETS/1 Main Procurements Toroidal Field Magnets winding: PA for TF coils signed in June 2008; Procurement strategy developed in order to reduce risks and costs: manufacturing of prototypes for TF winding packs and radial plates: World wide call for tender to manufacture 1 or 2 radial plates full scale prototypes to demonstrate the manufacturing feasibility and find the cheapest fabrication route. The activity should be carried out in parallel with the JA Domestic Agency; Slide 3
4 WBS 1.1 MAGNETS/2 Winding full scale production in phases. The first phase includes two years of R&D with the manufacture of a full scale dummy double pancake. Slide 4
5 WBS 1.1 MAGNETS/3 Toroidal Field Magnets Structure: Procurement of 12 fiberglass composite rings for the pre-compression system of TF coils (a prototype is included)(2). Slide 5
6 WBS 1.1 MAGNETS/4 Toroidal and Poloidal Field Magnet Conductors: One or two contracts (depending upon the production rate which the suppliers can achieve) for the supply of the Nb 3 Sn wire for the TF conductors ; A contract for cabling and jacketing of all TF and PF conductor lengths. The number of PF conductor lengths is subject to the result of the negotiation with the Russian Federation. Slide 6
7 WBS 1.1 MAGNETS/5 Main Design and R&D Activities Development of the closure welding techniques for the insertion of the winding packs into the casing; Analysis work to support the design and procurement of the coils (in particular, definition of test conditions); Characterization of ITER strands during production; Qualification tests on samples of the proposed high-irradiation resistent resin: DGEBF epoxy resin + cyanate ester blend (2); Cold test facility design and cost estimates (2). 8 WBS 1.5 Vacuum Vessel/1 Main Procurements Procurement of the stainless steel material for the first sector (2); Procurement of the 7 sectors (2) will be split into phases (restricted procedure is already launched). The 1st phase includes the manufacturing of sector no.5. This Procurement will also include the engineering and manufacturing design for all sectors and the following development activities: qualification of ultrasonic tests; EB welding system development; weld distortion control analysis. 9 WBS 1.5 Vacuum Vessel/2 Design and R&D Activities The following tasks are planned to be launched to support the manufacturing phase: Engineering Support for Design, FEM analysis and concept design, finalization of drawings for manufacturing contract; Consultancy in support to material procurement (definition of impurity level); Corrosion issues due to baking with hot gas (or steam); Consultancy with a Notification Body about testing and expediting policy during the manufacture of VV sectors (2). 10 WBS 1.7 Divertor/1 Main Procurements Procurement of the CFC material for the prototype (1st phase of contract) (2); Procurement for the manufacture of the inner vertical target prototypes (1st phase of contract) (2). Slide 10
11 WBS 1.7 Divertor/2 Design and R&D Activities Qualification of an alternative CFC grade to reduce costs by allowing material supplier competition and manufacturing of mock-up; Service contract for the follow-up of the manufacture of the inner vertical target; Manufacturing of small mock ups and medium scale prototypes for the full W divertor; Qualification of mock-ups and prototypes in CFC and W; Qualification of repair techniques on full size plasma facing units to reduce scrape rate and costs. 12 WBS 6.1 Site Preparations /WBS 6.2 Buildings/1 ITER Buildings form an integrated complex extending over an area of about 50 hectares, including 28 buildings: Reinforced concrete buildings and selected infrastructure: m³ of concrete, Building volume m³, foot print m²; Steel frame buildings: Foot print m² Slide 12
13 WBS 6.1 Site Preparations /WBS 6.2 Buildings/2 Main support contracts General Support-To-The-Owner Contract for the procurement of ITER buildings (follow-up of the call for tender, monitor the main contracts etc); Architect Engineer for the procurement of ITER buildings (detailed studies based on the preliminary technical specifications, prepare technical specifications for construction contracts); General Health and Safety Coordination Protection for ITER buildings (prepare detailed rules, follow up the implementation). 16 WBS 1.6 Blanket Design and R&D Activities High heat flux and thermal fatigue testing of FW mock-ups fabricated with improved Be/CuCrZr joints, of irradiated FW mock-ups and of FW mock-ups fabricated for the definition of acceptance criteria for the FW series production; Be/CuCrZr joining development; CuCrZr power-solid HIP development ; Irradiation and testing of blanket material (powder HIPed SS) and joints; Manufacture of qualification prototypes for the ITER FW and Shield; Engineering Support to Design and Analysis works; Pre-industrialisation of the HIP fabrication process for the FW and Shield components (2). 17 WBS 2.3 Remote Handling (RH) Basic activities Engineering support activities for studies in general areas; Qualification of radiation hard components (motors, sensors, etc). Specific activities Neutral Beam RH: design activities in view of the PA signature; Study on Transfer Cask path in the ITER buildings; In-Vessel Viewing System (IVVS): detailed design; Divertor RH: Preparation and start of future DTP2 upgrades (2); Manufacturing of Air Transfer Cask System prototype and related test facility (2); Manufacturing of IVVS mock-ups and related test facility (2). 19 WBS Ion Cycloton H&CD Antenna (ICH) WBS Electron Cyclotron Upper Launcher (EC-UL) WBS Electron Cyclotron Power Sources (EC-PS) ICH Detailed design of ICH antenna which will incorporate the R&D results on: Vacuum window, Faraday screen, Upgrade of existing test stand. EC-UL Procurement of: Prototype of a First Wall panel and blanket shield module; mm-wave components; CVD window and Components for dummy launcher tests. Final design of the launcher: completion of the design, including analysis and built-to-print documents. EC-PS Design activities for 2MW Gyrotron; Procurement of the 2MW CW dummy load for the 2nd prototype gyrotron and additional power supplies for the gyrotron magnet. Slide 19
20 WBS 5.3 Neutral Beam System Elise experiment preparation (Unique beneficiary); Design of the NB components outside the scope of the NB Test Facility, (beam line and beam source vessels, passive magnetic shield, drift duct, active correction and compensation coils and fast shutter); The detailed design and technical specifications of the components and infrastructure of the NBTF (Unique beneficiary); Procurement of hardware for the Ion Source Test Facility first phase; Procurement of infra-structure for the NBTF first phase; Experiments on insulation in vacuum and conditioning techniques (2); R&D on manufacturing techniques for NB components and preparation of technical specifications (2). 21 WBS 5.5 Diagnostics Activities launched in the diagnostic area during this Work Programme will focus on completion of the designs for the diagnostics and associated port plugs in the 9 diagnostic procurement packages for which the EU is responsible, to the level appropriate for a conceptual design review. The activities will include: Design and engineering studies of each diagnostic system; System-level optimisation; Prototyping and testing of relevant components; Assessment of the PA technical specifications. 22 Materials Development EUROFER Characterisation of EUROFER base material and welds for TBM use; Fabrication qualification (weld proprieties) (2); Development of materials data base and design rules (2). EUROFER ODS and SiC/SiC composite materials Physical and mechanical characterisation; Optimisation of fabrication processes (2). Slide 22
23 Test Blanket Modules Development of TBM box fabrication procedures and fabrication and tests of mock-ups; HCLL/HCPB TBMs Preliminary Safety Reports; Experimental activities in support of selection/qualification of tritium extraction technologies; Development and characterization of functional materials Conceptual design of Dummy TBMs Plug; Upgrading of test facilities; Sensitivity study of TF ripple induced by TBM; Development of predictive tools (some activities in (2)). 24 Conclusions The main procurements will be launched in the Magnet, Vacuum Vessel, Buildings and Divertor areas; Design and R&D Activities (Grants and Procurements) will be concentrated on the following subjects: Blanket, Remote Handling, Vacuum Pumping & Fuelling, Tritium plant; Cryoplant, Power supplies, CODAC, IC- H&CD, EC-H&CD, Neutral Beam System, Diagnostics; Supporting activities are planned in: Plasma Engineering, Safety, Nuclear Data, Engineering, Quality Assurance.
