1 ARCHBISHOP MOLLOY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION INFORMATION MAY 2013 Dear Parents of the Graduating Class of 2013, The month of May is a challenging one for seniors. Careful attention to many details will help your son or daughter prepare well for his or her graduation. Your reminders will help him or her succeed with his or her final responsibilities. Enclosed is a copy of the important calendar dates in May and June. ATTIRE Seniors are required to dress according to the dress code for all school events. The school uniform or the official senior shirt that students purchased earlier this term is required. All of the usual dress code regulations are in effect. TEXTBOOK RETURNS Seniors must return all loaned textbooks, or pay for lost textbooks and library books. Seniors will not receive graduation tickets, yearbooks, or caps and gowns until all obligations are satisfied. ACADEMICS Some seniors may think It s all over. Sad to say, each year a few do not complete graduation requirements because of failed subjects, and discover that, for them, it isn t over until August. I certainly don t want this to happen to any of our students. Your supervision is one important way to help them succeed. GRADUATION PRACTICES are: Tuesday, May 28th 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 29th 9:00 a.m. Thursday, May 30th 9:00 a.m. Each senior must attend all three practices. At the first practice (5/28), announcements and four tickets to graduation will be distributed to students who have satisfied all financial and textbook obligations. Admission to graduation is by ticket only, and the capacity of the auditorium limits the number of tickets available. The announcements are not good for admission; one can be sent to each guest along with a ticket. Colden Center strictly

2 enforces fire regulations and will not admit anyone without a ticket. Last year families that forgot their tickets had to go home to get them, so please be sure to bring the tickets with you. Yearbooks will be distributed at the second practice (5/29) to those who have completed all obligations. Senior awards will be given at the third practice (5/30). Caps and gowns will also be distributed to those who have completed all obligations. Gowns should be hung up to allow any wrinkles to fall out, but should not be ironed as damage may result. THE GRADUATION LITURGY takes place Thursday, May 30th, at the Church of St. Mary s Nativity, at 7:00 p.m. It is the first of two parts of the Commencement Exercises. It is a family celebration, and all members of your family are invited. Seniors will sit with their families. The church is located at Parsons Boulevard, Flushing. Since this liturgy is part of the graduation ceremony, boys are asked to wear jackets and ties and girls are asked to wear slacks or skirts/dresses of appropriate length. From areas north of 46 Avenue, go south on Parsons Boulevard to 46 Avenue. The streets on the left of Parsons are numbered. The streets on the right side of Parsons Boulevard are named for plants in alphabetic order, and the church is between Holly and Jasmine. From areas south of 46 Avenue, go north on Kissena Boulevard (Parsons Boulevard is interrupted by Kissena Park). After passing Kissena Park on Kissena Boulevard, go right on one of the local streets named for plants (Rose, Quince, or Poplar) a few blocks to Parsons Blvd. Make a left on Parsons and proceed to 46 Avenue (Holly Avenue). GRADUATION DAY Commencement will take place Saturday, June 1st, promptly at 12:30 p.m. at Colden Auditorium, Queens College. The auditorium is near the entrance on Kissena Boulevard just south of the Long Island Expressway. Seniors must report to the nearby small theater no later than 12:00p.m. in order to line up for the procession. Your son or daughter should bring his or her cap and gown. Boys should wear a white or blue collared dress shirt, tie, dress shoes and socks. For girls appropriate slacks or dress and dress shoes are required. Graduates should not bring cameras, yearbooks or any other valuables, since they will not have a secure place to leave these during the ceremony. While parents are permitted to take a few pictures with hand-held cameras, the aisles of the auditorium must remain clear for fire-safety reasons. Professional photographers are not permitted, nor is the use of tripods. Because graduates temporarily blinded by camera lights are in danger of tripping as they leave the stage, the ushers at Colden Center will remind photographers to stay at a distance from the stage area. Since your son or daughter will be keeping his or her cap and gown, there will be ample opportunity for photographs before and after the ceremony. For the safety of all of our graduates, your thoughtful cooperation with the ushers will be greatly appreciated.

3 DIPLOMA DISTRIBUTION To avoid any confusion at the ceremony, only the diploma cases are distributed. Report cards and diplomas will be distributed at Molloy after the Graduation Breakfast on Monday, June 3rd. Graduates should bring their diploma cases with them to protect their diplomas. After Regents exams, the school office at Molloy will be open through Friday, June 28 th. The school office will reopen for public business on Monday, August 12 th. Parents and graduates should keep this vacation schedule in mind and request any needed records accordingly. Thank you to all of the parents of our graduates. Without your support, encouragement and supervision, these memorable days of commencement would not be happening. Your son or daughter has received an excellent Catholic school education. We hope that these four years have helped him or her grow toward responsible, informed, faith-filled, and caring adulthood. 4 Monday, June 3 Senior Graduation Breakfast 9:00 a.m. Some Food for Thought.. Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 10 things students did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Rule 1: Life is not fair- get used to it! Rule 2: The world doesn t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won t be vicepresident with an expense account until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it s not your parents fault, so don t whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you ll end up working for one. If you agree, pass it on.
