2 Husband: Burial: Olaf THORSEN Abt Burying Ground of Crane Hook Lutheran Chruch, South Wilmington, Delaware Unknown Crane Hook DE [Rhodes.paf] Olaf had been a Midshipman on a Swedish ship of war, Kalmar Nyckel, in He came to Fort Christina in DE on 7 Nov 1641, and settled on land that had been purchased from the Indians for the establishment of a colony. He became a tobacco grower for the colony. The following is from: Settlers Arriving on the Kalmar Nyckel The Kalmar Nyckel did not bring any women or children to New in 1638, and when it sailed back to it left 25 men at Fort Christina. Most of them returned to when the vessel arrived on the second voyage, and no official record was made of the few that remained.' The following list of names, compiled by Peter S. Craig, leaves no doubt that women and children arrived on the second voyage; these were the first families to settle in the colony. The list is not complete, but it is the best that can now be offered and is subject to expansion. Although the majority remained in New as permanent settlers, some returned to on ships that later delivered new colonists. Moreover, some who returned to came back again to the colony. Where the occupation and place of origin is known this information is shown alongside the name. Peter Hollender Ridder, commander, Ekenas, Nyland,Finland Joost van Langdonk, commissary, Dutch Gregorius van Dyck, assistant commissary, Dutch The Reverend Reorus Torkillus, pastor William Loury, provost Johan Michellsson, corporal Anders Jonsson, gunner Bengt Thomasson, soldier Anders Nilsson Nagell, soldier Olof Svensson, soldier Steffan Olofsson, soldier Nils Svensson, soldier Peter Gunnarsson Rambo, Hisingen (Gothenburg) Anders Svensson Bonde Mans Anderson his wife his daughter, Brita Jon Thorsson Anders Larsson Dalbo Sven Larsson Maarbo Sven Gunnarsson his wife his son, Sven his daughter, Gertrude his son, Olof, born at sea Lars Svensson Bonde Marten Gottersson Settlers Arriving on The Kalmar Nickel or the Chantas As discussed in the text, the Kalmar Nyckel and the Charitas traveled together on the Kalmar Nyckel's third voyage 2

3 to New in On this expedition the names of some, but not all, of the passengers were recorded before the vessels left. However, there is no record at Gothenburg which lists the name of the ship to which each passenger was assigned. Peter S. Craig's documentary research permits identifying a few of the passengers assigned to one or the other vessel, but the majority must be listed as having sailed on either the Kalmar Nickel or the Charitas. As with those shown on the above 1640 list the majority of these passengers remained in New as colonists, although some returned to on later vessels. Those known to have arrived on the Kalmar Nyckel: Mats Hansson, gunner his wife, Elizabeth Laurens Andriessen, a Dutch "cuyper" Olof Thorsson, sailor his wife, Elise his son, Lars his son, Olle his daughter, Christina Mats Olofsson, sailor Mans Joransson, laborer, Finn Those known to have arrived on the Charitas: Mans Svensson Lom, freeman, from Roslagen his wife his daughter, Margaret his daughter, Catherine his son, Peter Knut Martensson, sailor, Vasa, Finland Lars Thomasson [Bure], sailor, from Veddige Ifver Sifferson Clas Classon, Dutch carpenter Hendrick Huygen, commissary, from Wesel, Germany Gotfried Harmer, cabin guard, from Worms, Germany Those who arrived either on the Charitas or Kalmar Nyckel: (The likelihood is that the majority were on the Kalmar Nyckel because the Charitas transported animals and fodder as well as supplies, and had only limited space for passengers.) Ivert Hendricksson, laborer, Finn Olof Palsson, laborer Per Johansson, laborer Johan Ericksson, laborer, from Angermanland Anders Hansson, laborer (brother to Mats Hansson above) Jacob Sprint, laborer, from Nyland Paul Jonsson, laborer, from Jamtland Axel Stille, laborer, from Roslagen Hendrick Matsson, laborer Johan Andersson [Stalcop], boy from Strangnis Olof Erickson, a boy Olof Stille, freeman, from Roslagen his wife his daughter, Ella his son, Anders Mats Hansson, laborer, Borga, Finland Peter Larsson Kock, laborer, from Bangsta Carl Johansson, Keksholm, Finland Eskel Larsson, army deserter Mr. Christopher, preacher Gustaf Strahl Mickel Jonsson Bolm, Reval, Estonia Mans Nilsson Klings his wife his small child his servant girl Carl Markusson Pafvel Schmal, boy from Norrmalm (Stockholm) Joran Olsson, provost Peter Andersson, guard Hans Mansson, laborer, from Skara Lars Bjornsson, sailor, Gothenburg Anders Christiansson, miller, Gothenburg Clement Joransson, laborer, Finn from Sunne Hendrick Matsson, laborer, Finn Eskel Larsson, laborer, Finn from Sunne Bartel Eskellson, laborer, Finn from Sunne Jons Pavelsson, laborer, Finn from Sunne This information was taken from "A Man and His Ship:Peter Minuit and the Kalmar Nyckel" by C.A.Weslager, published by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, a must have book for anyone with ancestors from New.
