4 Door stops Metal door stops are supplied as standard for insertion into the bottom track in order to stop the door at a pre-determined position. 5 Soft closing Bretton Park sliding doors come with the optional extra of soft closing. This function is provided by way of a piston which is housed within the top horizontal profile of the door, along with an activator which is fitted inside the top track. Soft closing is provided by either a 60Kg or 40Kg capacity piston - depending on the door size. Door widths of 855mm and above are supplied with 60Kg soft close mechanisms on both left and right hand sides of the door (unless handing is requested at the time of ordering). Door widths of 854mm and below are supplied with 40Kg mechanism s, again on both the left and right hand sides of the door unless stated otherwise. Each soft close mechanism is supplied with three activators of varying heights short, medium and tall. The different heights allow for a small amount of fluctuation within the aperture height dimension. The activator is fitted inside the top track see page 8 for details of fitting. Important: Soft closing must be specified at the time of placing the order as it cannot be retro-fitted. Suggested soft close handing and door stop placement positions are outlined in the illustrations below. 6 Installation and measuring up for sliding doors In order to calculate the size of the doors you first need to measure the aperture. As shown in the illustration below, measure the five points as indicated A to E. Wall to wall installation If the height measurements of A, B or C differ, then the floor and ceiling are not parallel. Similarly if the width measurements of D and E differ, then the walls are not parallel. It is important in order to ensure that the system performs correctly that the horizontal and vertical planes are parallel and square with each other. It may therefore be necessary to use panels or framing in order to achieve a true level, parallel and square aperture. The aperture dimensions must therefore take into account any panels or framing used the dimensions required to calculate the door sizes are therefore the final internal openings as indicated in the examples below. Also see the Example calculation on page 10. dd aa bb cc Ee This illustration shows a wall to wall installation utilising fitters panels (20 colours available) to frame the aperture, this solution is ideal if the walls are relatively flat and parallel. The use of panels enables them to be packed out to create a parallel run between the top and bottom tracks this also provides a sound base for the top and bottom tracks to be fitted to. Using panels on the walls can negate the need to remove the skirting boards see Installation around skirting boards page 6 for alternative options. It is suggested that the optimum depth from wall to front edge of the frame is mm. Where there is a greater disparity between the walls a scribe and return solution may be necessary this can be achieved by using two panels joined to form a right angle see Installation around skirting boards page 6 for an example of this. Wall to end panel installation A wall to end panel installation utilises fitters panels and an end panel. This solution is used if a wall to wall installation is not possible or desirable, with the end panel being used at one end of the run. Again it is suggested that the optimum depth from wall to front edge of the frame is 650mm. 5

7 Installation around skirting boards Where skirting boards are present there are a number of options available with regards to the installation of framing, examples of these are shown below. a) Panel scribed around skirting board with return panel b) Skirting board cut out for frame c) Frame or strike plate cut to fit above skirting board Typical installation example Fitters panel Top track Frame/panel There are many ways to install a sliding door wardrobe system, with different installation techniques being used by different fitters. The following example shows a wall to end panel installation which incorporates various internal carcassing and shelving. In this example top and bottom frames are used in order to ensure that the floor and ceiling are parallel packing is used underneath the panels to level them up. The problem of an uneven and out of square wall is resolved by using two panels to create a scribe and return perpendicular to the bottom track. 8 Installing the top and bottom tracks In order to ensure that the doors run smoothly, installation of the tracks should follow the guide lines below. Double top track Double bottom track 21mm Fit the top track flush to the front edge of the upper frame panel (if used). To secure the track to the panel, drill a series of 3mm diameter holes through the track. For a neater finish, countersink the holes using a 7mm drill bit. The bottom track should be fitted 21mm back from the front edge of the lower frame panel (if used). First remove the centre cover strip. To secure the track to the panel, drill a series of 3mm diameter holes through the track. Once secured clip in the central cover strip. Important: If door stops are being used (see page 3), slide them into the bottom tracks before securing. Additional single top track Additional single bottom track 25mm 21mm For installations which require three tracks, an additional single track can be used alongside the double track. The front edge of the single top track should be butted up to the back edge of the double track as shown in the illustration. Secure the single track in the same way as the double track. The positioning of the single bottom track should be such that the front edge of the single track is 25mm from the back edge of the double bottom track. Single bottom tracks must be fitted using screws with a maximum head diameter of 4mm. Important: If door stops are being used (see page 3), slide them into the bottom tracks before securing. 7

9 Installing the soft close activators into the top track As outlined earlier Bretton Park sliding doors are available with optional soft close. Depending on the width of the door either a 60kg soft close mechanism (for doors 855mm wide and above) or a 40kg soft close mechanism (for doors 854mm wide and below) is pre-fitted into the top of the door. In order for the soft close mechanism to engage when the door is closed, an activator needs to be fitted into the top track at a specific point please note that each soft close mechanism requires its own 60Kg Soft close system individual activator. Each soft close mechanism is supplied with three activators of varying heights short, medium and tall. The different heights allow for a small amounted of fluctuation within the aperture height dimension, select the appropriate height activator and discard the others once installation is completed. The illustrations below provide details of the fitting positions for the soft close activators. 40Kg Soft close system Top track Soft close mechanism Activator Top track Soft close mechanism Activator 195mm (to front edge of activator) 135mm (to front edge of activator) Door installation and trolley adjustment Once the top and bottom tracks have been fitted you can now install the doors. The illustrations below guide you through this process When all the doors have been placed into the tracks, height adjustment of the doors can be undertaken if required. The height of the bottom trollies can be adjusted up and down by 13mm (total) in order to line up all the doors in the run. In addition, adjustment can also aid the smooth running of the doors. 8

10 Door installation and trolley adjustment cont. The adjustment of the trollies is via a screw which is hidden behind the brush cover strip which runs up the outside edge of the handle profile. The brush cover strip is a feature of the Bretton Park system, as well as hiding the height adjustment screw it also acts as a buffer when the door is closed. The following outlines the height adjustment procedure for the bottom trollies. 1. Using your finger or a screw driver, push up the brush cover strip to reveal the trolley adjustment screw. 2. Using a 4mm Allen key, turn the adjustment screw to raise or lower the trolley as required. 3. When adjustment is complete, push down the brush cover strip to hide the adjustment screw. Calculating the number of doors required Based on the final aperture width as outlined earlier, use the following guidelines in order to determine the number of Bretton Park sliding doors required for your installation. 11 Example calculation The following example goes through the various steps required to measure, calculate the size, and price your Bretton Park sliding doors. Step 1: Measuring the aperture The first step is to measure the floor to ceiling height at a minimum of three points as indicated in the illustration (right). In this example the height varies from 2300mm (A) to 2320mm (C) indicating that the floor and ceiling are not parallel (see following page for example of how to rectify this). The shortest dimension (2300mm) is therefore used as the basis for determining the height. Carry out the same exercise to determine the width of the aperture a minimum of two measurements as shown in the illustration are required. In this example the width varies from 2660mm (D) to 2650mm (E) indicating that the walls are not parallel (see Step 2 below for an example of how to rectify this). The shortest dimension (2650mm) is therefore used as the basis for determining the width. d D=2660mm a b c A=2300mm B=2310mm C=2320mm e E=2650mm Step 2: Making sure that walls, floors and ceilings are parallel and square In order to ensure that the sliding door system performs correctly it is essential that the walls, floors and ceilings are level, parallel and square with each other. In this example the floor and ceiling, and the two walls are not parallel and therefore need squaring up. Where the disparity is not too great, one method for doing this is by using 18mm MFC panels which can be packed and filled to take up any gaps this method is shown in the illustration (right). Using this method also provides a sound base to fit the top and bottom tracks to. (Where the disparity is greater a scribe and return solution may be necessary to square up walls, floors and ceilings). 10

12 Step 3: Determining the final internal aperture size Once you have decided on which solution you will employ to ensure that all the walls, floors and ceilings are parallel and square, you can then calculate the final internal aperture size. In this example, using 18mm MFC panels, the calculations are as follows: 2364mm ( mm) Internal aperture height 2400mm (shortest aperture height) minus 18mm (thickness of top panel) minus 18mm (thickness of btm panel) = 2364mm 2614mm ( mm) Internal aperture width 2650mm (shortest aperture width) minus 18mm (thickness of left panel) minus 18mm (thickness of right panel) = 2614mm Now you have your final aperture size of 2364mm (high) x 2614mm (wide), you can calculate the number of doors required and the actual size of the doors. Step 4: Calculating the number of doors required and the door sizes Number of doors required - based on the aperture width of 2614mm we can see from the table (right) that this would require 3 doors. Door height - this is calculated by using the formula: 2364mm (aperture height) 42mm = 2322mm Door width - the door width is calculated using the formula: 2614mm (aperture width) + 56mm gaps for brushes taken from the table (right) = 2670mm 2670mm (from above calculation) 3 (number of doors) = 890mm From the above calculations we now know that we require three doors, each at 2322mm (high) x 890mm (wide) Aperture width Number of doors required Up to 2106mm 2 Up to 3143mm 3 Up to 4179mm 4 Up to 5216mm 4 Number of doors Gaps for brushes 2 26mm 3 56mm 4 86mm 5 116mm TIP! Consideration should be given to the ease of access to the room where the sliding doors are to be fitted. Stairs, corridors and doorways can all restrict access and given that the sliding doors can be quite large it is worth checking that the assembled doors can be transported into the room a hardboard template cut to the dimensions of the door will allow you to physically check access to the room. 11

13 Step 5: Calculating the price In order to calculate the price of the doors you now need to determine the frame finish, the panel configuration, and which panel materials are to be used. Panel material options A range of panel materials and finishes are available. Depending on the material, and in some cases the finish, panels are placed in different price groups these are as shown in the table,below. Frame finish Bretton Park sliding doors are available in two frame finish options Matt Aluminium and Lacquered Bronze. The finishes are priced differently; therefore please ensure that you select the correct price matrix to match the finish of your choice. Panel configuration options Bretton Park doors are available in seven standard configurations as outlined in the Door panel configurations section on page 2. Please ensure when pricing up your doors you are working from the correct configuration matrix. (See Bretton Park sliding door system price list). The total price per door is therefore = 340 As there are three doors in this particular installation then the total price for the doors is 340 x 3 = 1020 Top and bottom tracks Now that you have specified your doors and calculated the price, you should select the appropriate length (next size up) of top and bottom track from the price matrix. In this example as the aperture width is 2614mm, select the 3000mm length double top and bottom tracks and add the cost of these to the doors. Note - for some installations additional single top and bottom tracks may also be required. IMPORTANT Top and bottom tracks can be supplied cut to size if requested at the time of ordering. Please clearly state that you require cut to size along with the required length. Alternatively you may prefer to cut the top and bottom tracks on site during installation. Door stops and soft close Finally please include the cost for any soft closers required in your installation see page 4 for details of soft closers respectively. 16 Care and maintenance of Bretton Park doors Correct use and maintenance of your Bretton Park doors will improve the lifespan and maintain their appearance. Please take into account the following guidelines. Top and bottom tracks should be regularly vacuumed to prevent the build-up of naturally occurring household dust and debris. Glass and mirror panels can be cleaned using a number of widely available household glass cleaning products. Ensure to follow the manufacturer s instructions and recommendations for use. Other panel materials; MFC, vinyl, suede and the aluminium door frame profiles can be cleaned using a damp micro-fibre non-abrasive cloth with a light soapy solution of one part detergent such as washing up liquid with 99 parts warm water. Do not use white spirits, turpentine, solvent based, abrasive and vinegar based detergents or other cleaning products such as furniture polish. Coarse and abrasive cloths and sponges are also not recommended as they can lead to scratching and discolouring of the surface finishes. Bretton Park warranty period The warranty period covers and includes the free of charge replacement of parts only for the Bretton Park sliding door system for a period not exceeding ten years from the month of the original invoice. The warranty covers the failure of the door(s) and/or components and decorative panel materials used in the construction of the doors. Important Bretton Park doors and their associated components will be exempt from this warranty if on inspection by the company, it is found that faults, defects or deterioration of the reported items are as a result of poor installation, poor maintenance, customer mishandling or other product abuse. Where a claim is made within the warranty period all necessary paperwork and evidence must be forwarded to the company as follows - customer account number, original sales invoice or sales order number, detailed list of the items in question, photographic evidence and/or collection of the original doors or components at the company s request for inspection prior to the claim being upheld. Important The warranty does not cover any additional labour costs associated with replacement of the doors and/or components. Bretton Park therefore accept no further liability for any consequential losses or re-fitting costs. 15
