2 PRESENTING, DISPLAYING, PROMOTING AND SELLING ARTWORK R/504/0263 LEVEL 3 AIM OF THE UNIT By completing this unit, learners will understand how commercial, public and community display and presentation spaces are used, and how professional artists or designers present, promote, manage and sell their work. They will know how to select and organise work for a portfolio, organise a display of work, produce personal promotional material, and will understand how their work might be sold. 2

The work selected is appropriately presented M1 Learners investigations into commercial, public and community display and presentation are used to inform the choices made for the exhibition or display they are organising M2 Learners produce imaginative personal promotional material that is of a good standard and quality M3 Learners organise and present work to a good standard, giving consideration to the context in which others will experience and view their portfolio. D1 Learners organise a successful and effective exhibition or display. The work is displayed to a high standard, and full consideration is given to all aspects of presentation and communication, showing the work to best effect. D2 Learners produce innovative and creative personal promotional material that is of a high standard and quality. The material produced makes good use of the different opportunities and resources available. 3
4 TEACHING CONTENT The unit content describes what has to be taught to ensure that learners are able to access the highest grade. Anything which follows an i.e. details what must be taught as part of that area of content. Anything which follows an e.g. is illustrative, it should be noted that where e.g. is used, learners must know and be able to apply relevant examples to their work though these do not need to be the same ones specified in the unit content. Understand the use of display and presentation spaces Investigate how art/craft/design is displayed and exhibited: commercial e.g. shops, craft centres, galleries, internet, magazines, hoardings public spaces e.g. exhibitions, museums, colleges, galleries community spaces e.g. subways, roundabouts, town centres. Be able to produce personal promotional material Consider how you will promote yourself, for example. during an exhibition personalised business card/information card flyers/innovative advertising postcards of own work with contact details digital / web-based promotion. Be able to organise and achieve an exhibition or display For example: Exhibition/display could be of own work or that of others. a) consideration of appropriate location for display b) display boards, mounting, information c) lighting, sound, support materials d) identify any hazards/risks (eg. extension cables, safety of display). Understand how art or design work is presented, promoted, managed and sold Understand how select and organise work for an interview portfolio For example: Investigate how to produce an appropriate portfolio for: foundation/degree course interview vocational job opportunity meeting with potential client Considering: content quantity, selection, engagement, order presentation layout, mounting, annotation, digital. Carry out a study of an artist/designer investigating: background and nature of their work how they work/manage themselves how they present and promote work where and how work is sold Explore a range of possibilities to sell own work, for example: prints/postcards of own work digital / web-based work indirect selling galleries, agent direct selling trade/retail/craft shows loaning work to business. 4
5 Presenting, displaying, promoting and selling artwork Level 3 Unit 14 DELIVERY GUIDANCE This unit is centre-assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, learners must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all the pass grading criteria. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. Portfolios put forward for moderation must be available for the OCR Visiting Moderator to access freely during the moderation visit, along with witness statements and any other necessary supporting documentation. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by learners is authentic. of their own, or others work. Looking ahead to higher education or employment will provide a focus for P6/M3. Some evidence for this unit may be found throughout the learners other units and will need to be clearly signposted and tracked with supporting evidence including notebooks/ sketchbooks containing records of visits, research, planning, contacts etc. A clear and comprehensive photographic record of temporary displays and presentations needs to be available to support assessment decisions and should be supported by audience feedback, witness evidence sheets etc. In order to achieve this unit, learners must produce evidence that meets the all the pass grading criteria. There are no other additional requirements for this unit. With an emphasis on display, presentation and promotion, this unit presents opportunities for links with other units and to the learners own progression to further/higher education or employment. There is an emphasis on investigation into professional and commercial practise and how this can inform the learners own expectations and organisation. Whenever possible learners should be encouraged to visit practising artists, designers and craftspeople, galleries, exhibitions, commercial outlets, and art in public spaces, to gain first hand experience of how work is displayed, presented, promoted and sold P1/ P3. Personal journals/sketchbooks could be used to provide evidence of research, visits, contacts etc. Learners will have a number of opportunities to explore the possibilities of display and presentation, promotion and selling of their own work during the completion of other units, particularly those involving a client/audience and evidence of this should be appropriately recorded. In addition P2/M1/D1, the organisation and presentation of a display/ exhibition of their, or others work, presents an opportunity to put into practice what has been learnt from investigating professional practice in P1. This might be linked to an event in a gallery/school/college or the learner could be given a space for a designated time to organise a display or exhibition 5
