2 SAFETY TRAINING TOPIC Introduction Planning During the course of your work, you may be required to perm welding, cutting or other hotwork operations. There are many hazards associated with this type of work. If you do not work safely, you run the risk of causing fires, burns, toxic exposures, electrical shocks or even falls. This training has been developed to educate workers about how to take appropriate precautions in order to work safely while welding and perming other hotwork operations. Hazards Welding can expose you to toxic substances, noise, light and electricity. Exposure to fumes and particles that enter the air can cause breathing problems, eye irritation, and even cancer. Bee you even begin an operation, you must identify and plan the unique hazards of the job. No two jobs are alike and this step is essential each and every time. 3 Engineering Controls Whenever possible, perm welding in a designated area. Engineering controls have been set up in these areas to reduce the hazards. Engineering controls include: Welding booths Ventilation and exhaust systems Non-reflective coatings Non-flammable surfaces Once engineering controls have been put in place, personal protective equipment can provide a necessary additional layer of protections against hazards. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protects you from contact with the hazards of hotwork. The specific PPE needed will be determined in the preplanning phase. 4 Protective Clothing Depending on the job, you may need: Fire resistant clothing such as gloves, shirts, aprons, coveralls, leggings, boots, shoulder coverings and ear covers. Rubber soled shoes, nonconductive gloves, or special floor mats to guard against electrical shock. When dressing to perm hotwork, follow these guidelines: Always wear pants without cuffs Keep pockets empty and sealed Wear leather or wool instead of cotton unless fabric is treated to retard fire Never wear synthetic clothing that could melt onto your skin. Eye/Face/Head Protection When welding, always wear goggles or a welding helmet, or both if flying debris is present. Wear the proper lens shade number to avoid burning your skin or eyes. As always, clean and store eye protection properly afterward. Hearing Protection If a job is noisy, hearing protection may be needed. 5 Respiratory Protection When engineering controls cannot reduce contaminants in the air to an acceptable level, a respirator must be worn. Selecting the proper type of respirator depends on the respiratory hazards present. Your supervisor will identify the hazards and advise you of the correct respirator to wear. Be sure to be aware of the policies and procedures in our Respiratory Protection program and follow them. Safe Work Practices Safe Work Practices include: Shield your work zone Keep people away from the work area unless they have the appropriate protective equipment Keep all equipment and cables clear of passages, walkways, stairs and ladders Put welding rod butts in butt cans Clean up waste and materials as you go Vent or purge all hollow spaces, cavities or containers so air and gases can escape Use fall protection if required Follow confined space policies and procedures if applicable. 6 The 10 Commandments Safe Fuel Gas/Oxygen Welding 1. Momentarily open and close (called cracking) the manifold or cylinder valves bee attaching hoses or regulators. This dislodges any loose contaminant that is present. 2. Release the regulator adjusting screw bee opening the manifold or cylinder valve 3. Open valves slowly. Don't stand in front of the regulator when opening the valve 4. Don't use fuel gas from cylinders at pressure settings over 15 psi 5. Purge your fuel-gas and oxygen lines 6. Always light the fuel gas bee opening the oxygen line 7. Never use oil or grease around fuelgas/oxygen line 8. Never use oxygen as a substitute compressed air 9. Keep heat, flames, and sparks away from hoses, regulators, tanks and combustibles Conclusion 10. Make sure all hose, cylinder, and regulator attachments are tight and not leaking. 7 Tips Acetylene When working with Acetylene, remember: There is acetone in the cylinder and if you tip the cylinder over on its side; you will start to draw acetone out (this is the stabilizing solution the acetylene). If you lay it down, stand it upright an hour bee use because you will draw out the acetone. If too fast a rate, you will withdraw acetone. You might need two acetylene cylinders proper flow. Conclusion Our welding safety policies and procedures have been designed to keep you safe. Make sure you do your part by following all of the policies and procedures.
