2 INTERNATIONAL COMIC & NARRATIVE ART MASTER-CLASS PROGRAMME The European School of Visual Arts is opening an international course in comic art on Angoulême campus from the beginning of the academic year 2016/2017. This programme is designed for young foreign comic artists who previously attended art classes in their home countries and wish to opt for an art residency in France to do research and upgrade their level. 3 Admission In order to enroll for this programme it is compulsory to fill in an application form. The international course takes place over the academic year (from November to early June). The attendees will not only get specific individual support focused on their project but also attend seminars and workshops. They will also be able to take other theoretical and artistic classes at ÉESI and have access to the common resources (library, lending of material, laboratories ). The candidates selected for this programme will get a certificate but will not be able to get any equivalence with any of ÉESI s diploma that are obtained after three-year and two-year programmes. The candidates will be able to extend by one year their residency if they get the approval of the pedagogical referent who will supervise them during their stay. The candidate is expected to have attended art courses in his/her country (i.e. a three-year higher education diploma) or to have made a significant artistic work in comic art or visual narration. In addition, it is essential that the candidate speak fluent English and/or has reached a satisfactory level in French language and is able to express himself/herself in French (level of proficiency required: either at least B1/B2* in English and A2* in French or B1/B2* in French). *Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 4 - Official documents issued by a higher education art institution The application review board (Director and teaching staff members including the coordinator) will select the candidates. The selection criteria are as follow: - The assessment of the initial artistic background of the candidate - The quality of the art portfolio - The relevance of the project that the candidate considers carrying out during his/her residency at ÉESI Deadline for the applications: September 30th, ÉESI / Gilles Chezeau 4

5 Program The international course of ÉESI is designed for young artists who wish to develop an artistic and professional approach in comic art. Lying at the basis of this teaching approach will be the personal project of the student and his/her knowledge environment. It will aim at building the foundations of a comics author practice through discussions during seminars as well as individual tutoring. The students will also gain knowledge thanks to lectures and visiting lecturers, artists currently teaching at ÉESI (workshops, sessions, conferences, exhibitions) and especially thanks to the courses of the Master s degree in comic art (the mastery and the practice of comic art in its creative dimension and in an editorial perspective: book, album, web ). Regular appointments will be scheduled with the coordinator in order to introduce and question the creating process of a comic book and to make plans to attend several events -at and outside the School- related to topical issues in comic. The creating process refers to a step-by-step and thorough progression from elaboration to publishing: - Essential bibliography - Design aspects of a comic strip (story idea, graphic idea) - Preparation (documentation, scouting, notebook) - The writing of the project and the back-and-forth process with drawing - Script related issues and articulation of the story within time and space - Construction of the characters, working on faces and bodies - Role setting and the treatment of light and shade - Narrative and graphic mise-en-scène, ellipses, frames, plans, perspective - Page layout strategies 5

6 - Line, lettering, graphic/paper-based and computer-based colouring techniques - Finding a publisher - Printing and graphic chain - Distribution related issues (distributors, booksellers, festivals) ÉESI / Gauvain Massé Apéré 6

7 Resources The student enrolled in this programme will be allowed to use the pedagogical and technical resources of ÉESI: printmaking studio, shooting studio. He/she will also be given access to the School library. If interested, he/she may as well take part in the daily activities of the institution. The student will also have special access to the other local resources connected to comic art: the comics museum, library and bookshop of the International Centre for Comics and Images, the media library of GrandAngoulême, the documentation centre (consultation of all research papers on comic art), studios of comics collectives. It is worth pointing out that ÉESI is part of the Image Campus of Angoulême including EMCA (animation school) and ENJMIN (National School of Video Game and Digital Interactive Media of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts). ÉESI is the oldest institution on the campus. Referent The pedagogical coordinator of the international course in comic art is a teacher and author who is a permanent member of the pedagogical team of the School. The student will obviously be able to work with other teachers but the coordinating teacher of this programme remains the tutor and he organises the curriculum of each student, the final goal being the presentation of the personal project in comic art at the end of the creative research residency. 7

8 Duration The international course in comic art of ÉESI takes place over the academic year from November 2016 to early June 2017 as follows: - November to March: welcome session, seminars, individual interviews and opportunity to attend some lectures and conferences. Beginning of the creating process. - April to early June: continuation and finalisation of the comic artwork with access to the different resources of ÉESI (courses, facilities). The final work of the student will be assessed according to the abilities and needs of each student. A collective presentation of the work as well as a certification ceremony will be organised. Internal rules This document is delivered to the student on the day of his/her arrival at the School. It applies to all the students enrolled in the international course, regardless of their status. The student has mainly the same rights and obligations as the other students when participating in the School activities. Supplies and materials The student is expected to bring the basic tools he/she needs to work. Under certain conditions written in the internal rules he may occasionally have access to lending of material and use various consumables (mostly paper materials) like the other students of the School. In addition, the student has free access to all the tools, facilities and machines of the School, in particular to the computers with a personal login and password. 8

9 Cost The contribution to the School fees amounts to euros (three thousands euros). Limited number of registered students The number of registered students is limited to ÉESI / Martin Sztajman
