General studies include art and theory studies and language and communication studies. General studies are categorised as general compulsory studies that are part of a Bachelor s degree and optional studies. Responsibility for organising general studies at the School of Arts and Design lies with the Centre for General Studies in the Department of Art, which provides teaching for the entire university. Compulsory general studies refer to studies that, by decision of the Academic Affairs Committee for the School of Art and Design, are included in all Bachelor s Degrees regardless of the degree programme. In addition to compulsory general studies, the Bachelor s and Master s degrees include compulsory studies that are specific to the degree programme and specified in their degree requirements. Optional studies refer to courses offered by the Centre for General Studies that are open for all students of the university. Optional studies include both art and theory studies and language and communication studies. The student may for example take these as part of freely chosen studies included in his or her degree. As regards language and communication studies, optional studies that students of the School of Art and Design may take part in are mainly organised by the Language Centre at the School of Science and the Department of Communication at the School of Economics. Optional art and theory studies The optional teaching programme provides plenty of optional art and theory studies. Drawing and painting The drawing and painting studies consist of two-dimensional expression implemented in various techniques. The work is hands-on, learning-by-doing, without forgetting reference to theory. The studies include drawing, theory of colour and perception, painting and working with mixed techniques. The student becomes aware of how visual perception works and how the world around us and our relationship with it can be depicted in different ways. The courses also investigate the role of ideas and concepts in art, the relationship of art with design and its significance and role in society. The following courses are part of the drawing and painting studies: Introduction to Drawing and Painting I 4 ECTS (compulsory in a Bachelor s degree) Introduction to Drawing and Painting II 4 ECTS Introduction to Drawing and Painting III 4 ECTS Drawing and Painting studies IV-V 6 ECTS Drawing and Painting workshop 6 ECTS Life Drawing II 6 ECTS Anatomy for Artists 2 ECTS Freehand Drawing 6 ECTS Watercolour Workshop 6 ECTS Cartoon Art I 4 ECTS Cartoon Art II 6 ECTS (cartoon art as a minor) Cartoon Art III 6 ECTS (cartoon art as a minor) Cartoon Workshop 1 ECTS (cartoon art as a minor) History and Narrative of Cartoon 2 ECTS (cartoon art as a minor) Form and Space Form and space comprises courses based on modelling, plaster casting, sculpture and material collages. They emphasise perception of shape, volume and mass, but the relationship of shape with space and environment is also discussed. Form and space studies deal with the mutual relationships of volume, dimensions, shape and space, time, place and movement and the related concepts. Form and Space II and III are based on concept-oriented work that studies the working methods of contemporary art. The Form and Space studies consist of the following Form and Space I 4 ECTS (compulsory in a Bachelor s degree) Form and Space II 4 ECTS Form and Space III 4 ECTS Colour and Perception Colour and perception studies emphasise visual observation and related theories. The Colour and Perception I course approaches perception and basic concepts of colour, examining various contrasts and juxtapositions of colour through experimental means. The theory of visual perception, the relationship of colour with space, lighting and material as well as related assignments are emphasised on courses Colour and Perception II and III. The colour and perception studies consist of the following Colour and Perception I 4 ECTS (compulsory in a Bachelor s degree) Colour and Perception II 4 ECTS Colour and Perception III 4 ECTS Colour and Perception IV 4 ECTS Printmaking Printmaking Printmaking is based on techniques of producing plates or screens (copper and wood plates, limestone, silkscreen) for printing manually original art works.the prints are original works of art. The basic courses in printmaking offer elementary skills in mastering various printing techniques and their tools. The advanced courses in printmaking aim to build up the student s skills in and knowledge of a selected technique and to expand their personal artistic expression. Printmaking is part of specialisation studies, and the recommended starting level is the second year of BA studies. 31 Printmaking studies comprise the following Basics of Japanese Watercolour Woodcuts Basics of Stone Lithography Basics of Woodcut Basics of Silkscreen Basics of Intaglio Advanced Course in Stone Lithography Advanced Course in Woodcut Advanced Course in Silkscreen Advanced Course in Intaglio Contemporary art workshops Most contemporary art workshops focus on making art. In addition, the workshop provide information about the recent history and current phenomena and practices of each form of expression. The workshops are categorised according to the techniques used. The thematic contents of the workshops are defined by each teacher, but the main emphasis will be on themes and objects of interest brought up by the students themselves. The aim is to produce works of art that are not mere studies but modern art fit for collections or otherwise significant. Exceptions to this are the courses What s the Future of Art? and Looking at Art, in which the students instead of making art, study art theory, art analysis and discussing art from the perspective of contemporary art. What s Going On?, on the other hand, is a practically oriented course of social knowledge. To apply for a place on most of these courses, the students must submit a portfolio of their work (see more detailed course descriptions on Weboodi). Contemporary art workshops are MA-level courses, but

Before you start your studies, check if you have completed prior language studies for which you could get ECTS at the School of Art and Design. Credit transfers are based on a recommendation by the Council of Language Centre Managers at universities (28 March 2006). In language studies that are part of a degree, ECTS will be given for the following: Studies of a corresponding level and content in a foreign language, second national language or native language completed in another Finnish university or university of applied sciences. In addition, grounds for credit transfer for language studies may include: A third-level degree completed abroad (equals for foreign language studies, does not apply to foreign degree students). Studies of English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, or Russian amounting to a minimum of 25 ECTS at a Finnish or a foreign university (equals foreign language studies).
