Class of Their Own After School Club Newsletter Dear Parent/Carer, Welcome to the start of the school year! I hope you had a great holiday, and if your children came to our Holiday Club, I hope they had a great time Award Winners We hold an awards ceremony every year to thank and celebrate the people who have gone above and beyond what we would expect of them and I am pleased to let you know who our 2012 winners were! Working for 4 Years or More... Congratulations to the team members who have been working for us for over 4 years: Suzannah Novik (Portslade Infants) Amanda Barr (Downs Junior) Hannah Trinnaman (Downs Junior) Ryan Bayley (Davigdor) I am pleased to include the latest newsletter, however, before you start reading, I would be very grateful if you could confirm that the information that we hold about your family is still up to date. Check Your Registration Details Each September we do a check that the information that we hold on our database is up to date. It is important that you check this information carefully so we can be sure our records are accurate. We provide the club with a summary of this information each half term. Please note: the Primary and Secondary contact numbers are the first two numbers on our system, not the only numbers (unfortunately, technology does not allow us to show all the phone numbers we hold, sorry!). Newcomer of the Year Well done to Almu (Fairlight) who was awarded Newcomer of the Year for her ideas, enthusiasm and positive attitude. Bank worker of the Year Congratulations to Lily, our bank worker of the year - she has been a steadying and calming influence everywhere she has worked. We are delighted that Lily is now our permanent supervisor at St Bartholomew's. Welcome to our Newsletter! We have got lots of new children joining us this September.Whether you and your children are new to Class Of Their Own, or if you have been coming for some time, I hope they have a great time at the After School Club it is always our aim that children want to come to After School Club, and are not coming because you may have to work or study. The team are really excited about the start of the new year, and everyone has got lots of great ideas, and they are already planning the equipment and resources they are going to purchase to keep your children entertained.

As it is the start of the new school year, now is a good time to ask for you help with a couple of points: Tell your child s Class Teacher they are coming to After School Club. Please remember to let your child s class teacher that they are coming to the After School Club. We provide all schools with a copy of our register so they know which children will be attending the club, however, it is really helpful to us and the school if you can let the class teacher know that your child will be using the After School Club. Tell us about any After School Clubs your child is attending If your child will be attending any school run after school clubs, and will be arriving late at

4 the club, please let us know. Notice Period Your After School Club sessions are carried over on a perpetual basis. This means that days are carried over from term to term, and you do not need to re-book. You do, however, need to give us 4 weeks notice to permanently cancel a session. If you do not want your child to attend after October half term, you need to let us know by Friday 1st October Invoice Due Date Your invoice is due for payment before Friday 19th September. Paying Monthly The Class Of Their Own Pay Monthly scheme allows you to spread the cost of your After School Care over 12 months, so you pay exactly the same amount every month. You can make regular standing order or Childcare Voucher payments. Paying Monthly: Benefits To You You pay the same amount each month No large bills to pay every half term You don t have to remember to pay your bill as the funds will be automatically transferred each month Price is guaranteed for 12 months if our prices increase your standing order does not need to increase You may swap a limited amount of sessions per year By automating the payment process, staff in the clubs are able to spend less time doing administration and more time with the children. The scheme is open to parents wishing to set up a standing order with their bank, or to use regular payments with childcare vouchers. Once you have signed up to the pay monthly scheme, your price is guaranteed for 12 months and will not be subject to any increases in the next 12 months. If you sign up to pay monthly, you do not need to pay your current invoice. You just need to make your first payment on any date in September. Please click here for more info. Junk Modelling Wanted! We are starting to exhaust our supplies of junk modelling materials; so we are appealing

5 for all kinds of modelling materials; boxes, bottles, trays, egg boxes, bottle tops and so on- the children really do enjoy making models and as a staff we simply can't replace it faster than the children use it! We really would appreciate your help in replenishing our stocks! Old Shirts/T-Shirts Wanted We are very aware that your children are starting the new term with new uniforms/shcool clothes, and we have asked the team to be mindful of this and to ensure that children are well covered when they are doing messy play. If you have any old shirts/t-shirts that we could use as aprons, please do drop them into the club as we will put them to good use! Welcoming New Team Members September is always a time of change for our teams. Some of our Playworkers who are students change their working days due to timetabling or work placements, some of the team go to work full time in schools, and others change days or clubs. I am pleased to let you know that the core of each team is exactly the same this year, but you will see a new face or possibly two. Our team profiles are listed on each clubs page on our website, and are updated at least half termly. The Conaught Team Emma Emma has had lots of varied experience of leading children's activities and of caring for children and have a daughter herself. She is NNEB qualified and has worked in schools, day nurseries, breakfast and after school clubs and holiday clubs. She loves working with children and enjoys providing fun and creative activities for them through arts, crafts, games and cooking. She enjoys living in Brighton having moved here in 2010 from Somerset where she was involved in children's work and also youth work. Emma will be starting further training in the next year in youth and children's counselling. In her own time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends: cooking and baking, watching movies and going to the cinema, going for walks and being by the sea, travelling and holidays, eating all types of chocolate. She loves art and photography. She doesn't enjoy gardening, eating fresh tomatoes and bananas or early mornings! Barney is playworker at the club. Since moving to Brighton in 2008 Barney has been working in Primary Schools as a Teaching Assistant from Reception to Year 2 and working in a 1:1

6 capacity as SEN children. Prior to this, Barney ran his own fashion and textiles business and worked for a number of years as a Youth Worker, doing a lot of project work around his skills and interests in hip hop/street culture. He delivered regular workshops in Break and Street Dance and Graffiti art and organised events and exhibitions around this, including taking groups to the Edinburgh Festival for 2 years. Barney has a degree in fine art sculpture and much of his spare time is spent involved in various arts and crafts. Barney has a 5 year old son who he enjoys playing creating with especially drawing, painting, modelling and construction. Skateboards, scooters, roller skates & roller blades Last term, we conducted a review of our use of scooters, rollerblades and roller skates, and have now updated our risk assessment with revised guidance around the use of this equipment. The main change is that all children, regardless of age, must wear skate helmets, elbow and knee pads to use any of this equipment. We have invested in some lovely new helmets of varying sizes that the children must wear. Administrator Wanted We are currently recruiting a full time administrator for our office in Hove. This will be a very varied and interesting role for the right person. We provide a friendly and supportive working environment, and we offer our team free childcare in our clubs on the days they are working. If you know someone who might be interested in this role, please ask them to visit the Join Us page on our website or click here for more info. We have recently been contacted by parents of children who are now too old to attend our clubs asking if they can come back and volunteer as they are hoping to make a career working with children themselves. We love welcoming back children as volunteers, so please bear this in mind if your child would like to work with children in the future!
