1 City of Commerce Public Library Home Program There are several laptops that can be borrowed from the City of Commerce Public Library's Circulation desk at Central and its branches. Laptops are made available for library patrons for in building use while patrons visit the library or to be taken home for a period of time. Laptops can connect to any open WIFI hotspot to access the Internet. What type of Laptops does the library offer? 2 About Acer Netbooks What is a Netbook? Netbooks (sometimes also called mini notebooks or ultraportables) are a branch of subnotebooks, a rapidly evolving category of small, lightweight, and inexpensive netbook computers suited for general computing and accessing Web-based applications; they are often marketed as "companion devices" (Wikipedia). Netbooks are great basic web applications like Youtube, Facebook, browsing the Internet or working on papers and projects. They may not be suitable if you intend to do media editing, 3D games or other graphically intensive applications. In most cases, the netbook should be able to perform and do what you need. What Software is Available on the Netbooks? Chromebooks are shipped with Chrome OS, which uses Google Chrome web browser with an integrated media player. With limited offline capability and a boot time, according to Google, of eight seconds, Chromebooks are primarily designed to be used while connected to the Internet. Instead of installing traditional applications such as word processing and instant messaging, users add web apps from the Chrome Web Store (Wikipedia). Chromebooks are similar to Netbooks in that they are great for online usage and rely on the web, or cloud. What Software is Available on the Chromebooks? 3 Chromebooks Quick Start Guide Getting Started 1. Start up your Chromebook - Your Chromebook starts up quickly about 8 seconds in fact. To turn on your Chromebook, simply open the lid of your Chromebook or press the power button. 2. Select a network - Select the Library Wi-Fi network [coc.central.wifi 3] from the network menu. 3. Sign in with your Google Account - In the sign-in box that appears, enter your Google Account username and password and click Sign in. If you don t have a Google Account, click Create a Google Account in the sign-in box to set one up in a few minutes, or click Skip sign-in and browse as a Guest at the bottom of the sign-in box. 4. Start browsing - Once you sign in with your Google Account, you're instantly on the web and automatically signed in to the Google services you use, with access to your Chrome bookmarks, settings, apps, and extensions. To get started, type a website or a search query into the Chrome Omnibox. 5. Log out - When you ve caught up on , and finished your work, hold down the power key for a few seconds to shut down. Every Chromebook runs thousands of web apps. When you re signed in with your Google account, just open a new tab and click the Chrome Web Store icon to find the latest web apps, including some of our favorites: Netflix, New York Times, Pandora, Angry Birds, Plants Vs. Zombies, Kindle Cloud Reader, Aviary Image Editor and much more! 3) Get work done, anywhere - Create instant documents, spreadsheets, presentations and even drawings using apps like Google Docs or Zoho Writer. 4) Enjoy unlimited entertainment - Instantly watch your favorite shows streaming from Netflix or YouTube. To listen to your favorite songs, try apps like Pandora Internet Radio or MOG. Just remember to wear your headphones in the library! 5) Stay in touch - With a built-in webcam and microphone, place a call, have a video chat, or host a Google+ Hangout without any need for downloads or drivers. You can also use instant messengers like Google Talk or IMO to chat with friends. 6) Store and share your files and photos safely online - If you lose your Chromebook, you ll need to buy a new one for the library, but your data and documents will be safe, using services like Google Docs and Box.net. 7) Get comfy - Your Chromebook comes equipped with a keyboard optimized for the web, including a dedicated search key, a new row of web-enabled keys, and a comfortable, full-size layout that doesn t cramp your fingers. 8) If you're using a Chromebook, use the touchpad to move the pointer and select items on the screen. 5 Netbook Quick Start Guide Getting Started 1. Start up your Netbook Press the power button on the top right of the keyboard. Wait for the Windows to complete it loading process. 2. Select a network Select the Library Wi-Fi network [coc.central.wifi 3] by clicking on the Wireless Manager on the bottom right (signal bars). 3. Open Your Browser or Program The netbooks are equipped with Internet browsers as well as some productivity tools like a word processor (LibreOffice). 4. Listen to Music or Watch Videos Use the Internet browser to visit sites like Youtube.com or Pandora.com for videos or music. 5. Get to know your Netbook Feel free to explore the computer and play with the programs. 6. Log out - When you ve caught up on , and finished your work just shut down your computer by going to Start Shutdown. The Netbooks are set to forget all data upon restart and is now ready to provide a brand new experience to the next library patron, without giving them accidental access to any of your work. 5

7 Laptop Borrower's Guide Borrowing Information Who can borrow a Laptop? Patrons over 18 may borrow the laptops. Patrons must have a valid City of Commerce Public Library card and be in good standing (under the $10 maximum fine threshold) and a picture ID. Patrons must have signed the Laptop Borrower Agreement form signed and on file in order to checkout a laptop. Laptop are loaned on a first-come, first-serve basis. One laptop per person. How can long can you checkout a Laptop? Laptops can be checked out for 7 days. If you check it out on a Tuesday it will be due the following Tuesday by closing time. When can I checkout a laptop? Laptops may be checked out during all posted library hours, however they must be returned to the circulation desk before closing. Do not leave the laptops in the bookdrop or you may incur fines or late fees. Where can I use a laptop? Anywhere inside the public library building. Laptops can also be taken home or to a local coffee shop that offers free wireless. Please be careful and vigilant when you take the laptop out to prevent theft or damages. You are solely responsible for the charges. What do I get when I borrow a laptop? Wireless laptop, Carrying case and Power charger Headphones, a mouse and USBs may also available at the circulation desk on a first-come first-serve basis. What are the fines and fees for late or damaged laptop? Please do not leave laptops unattended. You are solely responsible for the laptop while it is checked out to you, and you will be accountable for any overdue fines, damage, loss, or theft. Laptops accrue fines at the rate of $10.00 per day overdue. Laptops are checked out for 7 days so if you need it for longer you can bring it back and check it out again if no one else is waiting. If the laptop is not returned by 10 days overdue you will be charged the full amount of $450. You (the borrower) are responsible for the laptop and will be billed for reasonable repair or replacement costs up to $450 if the laptop or components are damaged, lost, or stolen or $10 per minor cosmetic damage and up to $50 dollars per peripheral lost or damaged. You are also responsible for any violation of the library Laptop Borrower Agreement, Computer User Agreement and all other applicable library policies What happens when I borrow a laptop? Laptops are checked out from circulation desk at your local City of Commerce Public Library and must be returned to the same location they were checked out at. You must present your valid Library card and picture ID each time you check out a laptop. NO EXCEPTIONS. You have read and accepted the Laptop Borrower Agreement. By the end of the loan period you must bring the laptop back to the circulation desk in person. Do not leave the laptop on the circulation desk or in the book drop wait until a staff member is present. You must wait for the library staff as they fulfill obligations to inventory components and test laptop operation. You will then receive a receipt when the laptop is fully inspected and returned. 7

8 How do I use the laptop? How do I print? Printing will be available from the netbook only when logged into the library WIFI It is not available for the Chromebooks at this time. You will also need your library barcode and PIN number to print. Click on File>Print and follow the printing prompts. Printing is subject to the same policies as the public computers. You will have 10 free pages per day and 10 cents per copy after that. This is a system wide policy (10 pages between all four libraries). Any print jobs after 10 pages must be picked up at the circulation desk where payment will be due for any pages after 10. If you need to print you may also the document to yourself and print from one of our public computers or Express station. How do I save? You will need to save your work to a USB memory stick (provided by you). You can also files to your address or use a service such as Google Docs to store your files. Please keep in mind that files you saved on the laptop may not be there when you turn it back on to be safe, use a USB drive! How do I log off? When you are done using your computer simply turn it off Start > Shutdown on the Netbooks or the Power Off button on the Chromebooks. Simply bring it back to the library you originally checked it out from. Please be sure to check that all components and peripherals you checked out are present when you check it in. Also be sure to give the staff member some time to review the laptop to ensure all components are working. The computers are also set to forget any private information you may have entered upon shutdown or reboot so there is nothing to worry about there. What if I need to step away from my computer? Don t! Take the computer with you at all times! Laptops are easy and convenient for thieves to steal. Where can I use the wireless Internet? Wireless access is provided inside all of our four libraries, Central, Atlantic, Bristow and Greenwood and also available at certain locations such as local coffee shops or other stores. You can also use the laptops at home if you have a wireless router with an Internet connection.
