2 UNIVERSITY SYSTEM AND USEFUL INFO FOR RECOGNITION Italian higher education system is based on a 3 cycles study as follow: Bachelor Master DEGREE Degree Level: 1 cycle Credits to be earned to obtain the Degree: 180ECTS Degree Level: 2 cycle Credits to be earned to obtain the Degree: 120ECTS Ph.D Level: 3 cycle Credits: Not yet Duration: 3 to 4 years Duration: 3 years Duration: 2 years The University of Bologna fully implements the European Credits Transfer System (ECTS) at Bachelor and Master level. To each subject a certain number of credits is assigned in order to describe the total workload required to student. The Italian acronym for ECTS is CFU. 1 CFU = 1 ECTS = 25 hours of total workload (e.g. classes, lab, papers, individual study) Credits are earned by the student only once the final exam has been successfully passed. Attendance is not sufficient in order to get credits. At the end of the mobility period, Credits seeking students (Exchange students) receive a document called Transcript of Records where the list of subjects successfully passed is provided together with the information about the University system and the grading scale applied. General grading scale for exams: Fail less than 18/30 Passed 18/30 Excellent 30/30 Oustanding 30/30 cum laude The ECTS GRADING SCALE is enclosed to the Transcript of Records. The ECTS grading scale is a statisticsbased system. The ECTS grading scale is based on the class percentile of a student in a given assessment, that is how she/he performed relative to other students in the same group of students. This group of students at the University of Bologna is identified in the School students' population. Therefore grading scales vary and depend on the single School performance. ECTS grading scales are different from School to School: grades at the School of Economics and Statistics has a different weight of those of the School of Engineering and Architecture. Degree seeking candidates receive after graduation the Title Diploma and the DIPLOMA SUPPLEMENT. 2
3 ALERT: the duration of the AMIDILA scholarship does not necessarily corresponds to what will be the actual duration of the Bachelor, Master or PhD programme you will enroll to. So be aware that you may be required to stay at the University of Bologna for completing the degree also after the end of your AMIDILA scholarship. This is always true for PhD programmes where at least 9 additional months must be considered. EXAMPLE: the majority of our PhD starts on January every year. So you will be required to be here by mid- December The PhD will finish administratively on December 2017 and you will be able to graduate between March and June The AMIDILA scholarship can fund your stay up to mid-july 2017 that is when the AMIDILA project will end. This means that after July 2017 you will have to find alternative funding solutions also with the help of the Hosting Department, if possible. Consider however that the total amount of the AMIDILA scholarship is sufficient to provide you with a financial sustainability for the whole duration of the PhD programme, that is till June This of course requires for an accurate management of savings. 3

We do offer only 1 Bachelor degree and 20 Master degrees completely taught in English: Bachelor degree: Business and Economics Master degree: SOCIAL SCIENCES Interdisciplinary Research and Studies on Eastern Europe Innovation and Organization of Culture and the Arts Economics Quantitative Finance International Management Health Economics and Management Tourism Economics and Management Economics and Market Policy ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY Aerospace engineering Automotion engineering Bioinformatics Water and Coastal management Chemical Innovation and regulations Electronics Engineering - Electronics and Communication Science and Technology Civil Engineering Science for conservation-restoration of Culture Heritage Chemical and Process Engineering - Sustainable chemical and biochemical technology for environment and materials Environment and territory engineering - Earth resources engineering Telecommunication engineering - Communication, networks, systems and services International Horticultural Science Language requirements and Certificates Requirements in terms of levels of knowledge and Certificates may vary according to the specific BA/MA programme you would like to apply for. For instance: - some MA programmes do require for a TOEFL certificate in order to certify your English language knowledge. If this is the case you will have to upload a TOEFL certificate in your AMIDILA application form. That means you have to pass the TOEFL test before applying for an AMIDILA scholarship. - Other MA programmes may require for supporting documents but not for a specific one. In this case you will have to upload in your AMIDILA application form an official supporting document such as a Certificate issued by a Language Center or by the Institutes of Italian Culture or by your University certifying the level required. - Other MA programmes may just inform you about the level of knowledge required in order to successfully attend the programme but do not require for any certificate. It means that the responsibility is left to the applicant. Generally speaking we do require the following levels: - CREDITS SEEKING/EXCHANGE CANDIDATES: from A2 to B2 level according to the specific programme. - DEGREE SEEKING CANDIDATES: from B2 to C1 level according to the specific programme. 5

So, you will not need to submit any other application in order to get admitted. This nevertheless means that the admission and the AMIDILA scholarship are strongly connected: if you get an AMIDILA scholarship you also get the admission BUT if you do not get an AMIDILA scholarship at the same way you will not get admission regardless you receive a positive academic evaluation. Degree seeking candidates: - Full Bachelor: you must already hold a Secondary education title by the time of submitting your application form. - Full Master: you must be either a final year student who will receive by June/July 2014 the Bachelor degree or already hold your Bachelor degree.
