2 Why is Cap & Trade Important to SSM? EVERYONE WILL BE IMPACTED Estimated $4-5 Million per year from the community going to cap and trade. Our steel operations have among the highest GHG emissions in the Province. The transition to low carbon technologies represents an economic opportunity - boosting the economy and creating jobs. Rising electricity and fossil fuel prices will have increasing impact on local economy. The environment is experiencing change; rising temperatures, weather patterns, water levels and distribution of plants and animals.

3 Ontario s Climate Change Action Plan Fighting climate change presents a major economic opportunity. According to the U.S. State Department, expansion of the global green economy is forecast to be six times greater than the technology boom of the 1990s which saw the growth of the Internet, the first smart phones, and other breakthroughs that affect everyday life today.

13 Ontario s Five Year Climate Change Action Plan Cap & Trade: The Cap sets a limit on emissions which is lowered over time to reduce GHG release. The Trade creates a market for carbon allowances, helping companies innovate in order to meeting, or come in under their allocated limit. (economic incentive to pollute less)

14 Climate Change Action Plan Cap & Trade: The cap should limit emissions economywide, covering electric power generation, natural gas, transportation, and large manufacturers. Industry can plan ahead Companies can turn pollution cuts into revenue The option to buy allowances gives companies flexibility
