7 Search a specific newspaper or sources across a state, region or the U.S. For perspectives on topics, people, issues and events, use the map to expand or narrow your search. For example, narrow your search from the entire U.S. To the Mountain Region To the state of Arizona To a single newspaper, The Arizona Republic.

13 In In this example, search the entire United States Type your search term(s) to to describe an an issue, event, etc. In In this example, use terrorism Choose a timeframe from the drop-down menu. For example, the past twelve months.
14 In In a second example, compare recent events with past events Continue to to search on on terrorism However, choose a different timeframe. For example, choose oldest matches first and specify the year 1992.

18 1. 1. To To perform a basic search, type your search term. For example, New Orleans (in quotation marks) and FEMA Choose a timeframe. For example, the past 7 days. Tip: To To find names, compound terms or or exact phrases, use quotation marks. For example, New Orleans.

For example, try News Orleans Red Cross FEMA Click on on Advanced Search for even more options. Tip: A search with three or or more terms automatically implies a Boolean AND between each word.

21 Again, you can select a single newspaper and search for or or browse content on on a chosen topic. Tip: You can also browse a single issue of of a selected newspaper. Find a specific issue by by entering a specific date.
22 Locate an article you remember reading For example, search for an article With the words virus and vaccination From the past three months In a specific newspaper or a title from a certain region Note: The sources available to you will depend on your NewsBank subscription
23 1. 1. Use the map or or lists of of newspapers by by state or or region or or nationwide to tofind the title that published the article Based on on what you remember about the article, choose appropriate search terms Choose a timeframe. For example, select the past three months.
24 For example, select an an article in in the Kerrville Daily Times from Kerrville, TX. Tip: Notice the highlighted search terms with the text of of the article.
25 1. 1. You can find the same article by by selecting a specific newspaper. For instance, directly select the Kerrville Daily Times from the list. Tip: If If you remember a recent date during which the article was published, you can simply browse that day s issue and its its articles.
26 Browse a specific newspaper by date For example: You remember seeing an article in your local paper about how candidates for the mayor of Lansing, Michigan want to keep the local Lugnuts baseball team. Your local paper is the Lansing State Journal. You think the article may have been published during the week preceding Labor Day Weekend in Note: The sources available to you will depend on your NewsBank subscription.
27 1. 1. Select a single newspaper. For example, the Lansing State Journal. Tip: Through the easily customizable interface, your library, school, college or or university can highlight local or or in-state newspapers on on the tool bar for direct access.
28 2. 2. Type the date you wish to to browse. In In this example, select August 31, Note that the interface shows two days before and after the date you have selected. Tip: Browse features are available only if if a single newspaper is is selected.
29 3. 3. Click Browse Browse articles by by clicking on on their headlines or or by by selecting Search Within this Issue. Tip: Section labels match those in in the newspaper s hardcopy edition.
30 5. 5. Browse the article. Note the headline, paper title, date, author and number of of print pages Click on on Quick Links to to find other articles from the same author (in all all issues) or or browse other articles from the same page, section or or day.
31 Tip: At At the bottom of of each article is is more information on on the page, section and index terms supplied by by the newspaper, dateline and copyright. Tip: OpenURL links at at the end of of each article enable you to to link an an to to article in in an an , which can be be sent to to a friend, colleague, student or or professor. Also, each article has a MARC Record Number, so so it it can be be uniquely identified.
32 Locate an obituary For example: Princess Diana, from August 1997 Smith, a former professor at the Naval Academy, who is recently deceased In your search, you might specify: The region or paper where an obituary would have been published The name of the deceased The month and year of death
33 Search all all U.S. newspapers for Princess Diana Type the name of of the deceased in in the search box Select Most recent matches first Choose a timeframe. In In this case, Click Search.

Search all all U.S. newspapers by by typing Smith and Naval Academy (both in in quotation marks) and choosing the Headline option In In the second search box, type obituary and choose the in All All Text option Select all years, since you cannot remember when he he died. Click Search View results.

Tip: Since many people live in inseveral places during their lives, obituaries may be be listed in in newspapers from two or or more cities. 38 1. 1. Choose Basic Search and select all all papers in in Louisiana. This makes sense, of of course, because you are likely to to find many gumbo recipes here! Type gumbo recipe in in the search box Select Best matches first.

40 1. 1. Choose Basic Search, and select all all papers in in the New England region. Again, this is is a logical place to to search for this recipe Type New England Clam Chowder (in quotation marks), so sothe results return white rather than red clam chowder. Also, type recipe in in the search box Select Best matches first.

42 Locate a book review For example, find reviews on books by the following authors: John Grisham Ian McEwan
43 1. 1. Search a single title for reviews of of works by by John Grisham. In In this instance, The New York Times Book Review Use the Advanced Search.
44 1. 1. Type John Grisham in in the first search box and book review in in the second search box. Tip: Do not specify in Author, because that will restrict the search to to the authors of of newspaper articles. Rather, type a name or or some words from the title into the search box.

46 1. 1. Using Advanced Search, broaden the number of of sources by by including all all U.S. newspapers. Search for Ian McEwan Enter a word that is is likely to to appear in in the review, such as as part of of the title.
