1 The Internet version of ONPOINT is for use by the general public and can be accessed from a computer that is on the Internet by using the following URL: ( ). OnPoint is fully supported using Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7. The Mapping Center does not test or support other browsers (IE8, Firefox/Mozilla) at this time. 1: ONPOINT Map Tabs There are four tabs with the Internet version of the ONPOINT application (General, Environment, Planning and Parks). Each tab has data that is applicable for that tab. The data in the General tab is a group of data that is generally accessed by many OnPoint users such as streams, street network data, zip code data, school, police, zoning, civic association, building and pavement data. 1

2 The Environment tab provides you with data about the Arlington County environment such as survey control monuments, contour layers, geology layers, soil layers and resource protection areas (RPA). The Planning tab has data associated with development projects in Arlington County such as; zoning site plans, approved, demolished, under construction and completed projects in addition to some census data. The Parks tab has data regarding parks in Arlington County such as; park names, amenities (baseball fields, bathrooms, shelters) significant and champion trees, invasive species and public art. 2: ONPOINT Tool Bar (right margin) On the right side of the ONPOINT mapping application there is a tool bar. There are twelve tool bar options that are available when using the mapping application. To activate any of the tools you single-click the button on the tool bar. Here is a brief explanation of each of the tool bar buttons: 1. The Full Extent or full view button. When pressed this button will allow you to bring your map to the full extent (shows a full view map of Arlington County) from wherever you are. 2. The Zoom In tool button allows you to zoom in on an area of the map. There are two ways to use this tool. You can single-click on the map to zoom in on that area of the map or you can place your mouse on the screen, hold down the left mouse button and draw a blue square around the area you want to zoom in on. 3. The Zoom Out tool button allows you to zoom out from an area of your map. The zoom out tool is exactly like the zoom in tool. It just takes you in the reverse direction. 4. The Pan Tool button allows you to move or scroll the map in any direction. To use the pan tool you single-click the pan tool button on the tool bar. When you move your cursor over the map area the cursor will change from the standard cursor to a hand representing that the pan tool is active. Place the hand for the pan tool on the map and hold down the left mouse button. You can move the map in any direction while holding down the mouse button. 5. The Get Information tool button allows you to obtain information regarding features of the map. You just click on a map feature and a separate dialog box with information for that feature will appear. This tool is one of the more widely used functions of the OnPoint application. 6. The Previous and Next Map tool buttons are like the back and forward buttons on a browser. If you change your map the previous map tool will take you back to the previous map change. 2

3 7. The Legend tool button shows you the legend for your map. If you are unaware of what a symbol is on the map you can press the legend tool to see what the legend has on it. The legend can be printed with the map (see #8 above). 8. The Print This Map tool button allows you to print your map with a legend. The print this map tool gives you the opportunity to preview your map and provides you with a way to place a title on your map. If you print your map you should consider printing it in landscape mode. The legend will show up nicely on the map. Portrait style printing tends to squeeze the legend at the bottom of the map. If you choose the landscape mode you must also set your browser s print settings to reflect this. Most browsers default 9. The Map Tips tool button allows you to see information on a particular feature in the current layer selected. So if you selected the Parks layer, and pressed the map tips button. If you clicked on a parcel on your map it would give you the name of the map. 10. The Generate URL tool button allows you to generate a URL for a map consisting of X and Y coordinates. You can create a label for the map in addition to ing the map to someone (or yourself). 3

4 3: ONPOINT Search Tools To the left of the ONPOINT map screen there is a menu bar with Search Tools, Advanced Tools and Layer Manager menus. Open Search Tools by pressing the arrow to the right of the Search Tools menu. Search Tools consist of the following: Address; will allow you to find an address and will place a symbol on your map for that address. This is a tool that is commonly used to locate an address in Arlington County. The OnPoint address tool is similar to the address search tool in many other mapping applications. Like other map applications there are other ways to locate an address such as panning and zooming. Intersections; will allow you to find an intersection and will place a symbol on your map for that intersection. Parcels; will allow you to find information about a particular parcel. Some of the information for parcels is pulled from CAMA (Computer Aided Mass Appraisal) system, the Arlington County real estate application. Civic Association; will allow you to find a particular Civic Association. Development Projects; will allow you to find information regarding approved, completed, demolished and under construction projects Metro Station Area; will allow you to view various boundaries for Metro Stations within in Arlington County. Neighborhood Conservation Area; will allow you to view different Neighborhood Conservation Areas within Arlington County. Park (County); will allow you to find a County.. 4

5 The Address tool allows you to locate an address in Arlington County. To use the tool you click on the address menu item under the Search Tools menu. The address screen will appear (see below). You must enter an address that includes a street number and name. Then press the search button. If the street name or number is not recognized, ONPOINT will give the following error message, No records found. If you receive this error please check your address name and number or try removing any direction specification (North, South, East or West) or street type (Lane, Blvd, Circle, etc) from your search. When you press the search button you will see a point on the map that shows the address you are searching for (see below). 5

6 Click on the icon under the What s Nearby menu on the Selection List Menu (see above). Select the facility type of your choice. The, what s nearby button has options that can be used for sorting a list of what s nearby. 6

7 You can search by name, type, sub type and specify the number of facilities you want on your list within a radius buffer (specific number of feet or miles). For example; if you use a type equal to School facility, you can specify a sub type of Alternative Middle Schools. This allows you to refine the number of facilities found in your search. The intersection search tool allows you to locate an intersection in Arlington County. You must know the cross streets for the intersection you are interested in. Enter the cross streets of the intersection in the Street and Crossstreet boxes. If the street name is not recognized, ONPOINT will give the following error message, No records found. Check the street names or try removing any direction specification and or street type (North, South, Lane, Blvd, Circle, etc). If you re unsure about the street name, enter the name in the box and press the lookup button. ONPOINT will give you options in a drop down list for the street name you entered. 7

8 After entering the two cross streets, you can click the search button and you will receive a map of that intersection (see below) with a point at the intersection location and a label of the cross streets. 8

9 The Facility tool allows you to locate a facility type such as a post office, metro station, County facility, Park or Community Center. You can select the facility by using the drop down list and selecting a facility category (for example: fire station, recycling center, library, school, etc). When you press the search button on the facilities search tool you will get a list of facilities that match your search criteria (see below). The map will show points of all facilities that appear on your selection list. 9

10 4: ONPOINT Layer Manager The layer manager is the tool to control what is being viewed within the map. Looking at the layer manager you will notice some layers are in bold type. Those layers are actually Groups usually have layers listed under them (see below). The reason for this is that we group like layers together to prevent the layer manager list being so long. You must remember to place a check mark in the box for a group if you want to utilize the layers within it. For example; the Misc Point Features group has Metro stations, Facilities (Arlington County office, Post Offices, Hospitals, etc) and address points that can be enabled on the map. To select a grouped layer you would click the arrow next to the group name to expand the list of layers. Then place a check in the check box next to the group name and the layer(s), then press the apply button above the list of layers to turn them on. 10
