2 Discovering The Hills of Barga This is the perfect excursion for those who want to get a closer look, without the hustle and bustle, of the daily life of Barga, slow city and one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. Come and visit its nearby small towns in which time has not dominated the life of its people; extraordinary places in which history intertwines with the everyday life of the people of Barga. Depending on the season, along the way, we will come across people concentrated on their work in the fields, students returning home from school, and the old folks, that with a smile, are happy to exchange a few words with you. Once at Catagnana, there is the possibility of continuing the excursion to the village of Sommocolonia (this is subject to the unquestionable judgment of the guide). Despite the heavy losses suffered during the Second World War, the town preserves the atmosphere of days gone by and historical heritage that dates back to the Roman period. The hiking time is about 4 hours (10.2 km 6.3 miles) for an average hiker and about 5 hours with the alternative route (12 km 7.5 miles). 3 A Day in The Three Lands of Lucca Chestnut woods, small villages with an antique charm, splendid vineyards and breathtaking views are ready to tell you the stories of a land where time passes slowly, where the old and the new come together in a simple reality of villages and intense human relations. Mule tracks, paths and roads, of an authentic and striking countryside, will take us to villages that were once known as the three lands of Lucca : Treppignana, Lupinaia and Riana, a corner of the Garfagnana, the great Apennine region controlled by the Duke of Este. Time has erased many things but traces of what it meant to be a borderland remain in these villages. The land bears signs of the industriousness of those who had to count only on themselves in times when towns and communities bought and sold each other or were otherwise conquered with bloodshed. 4 Discovering The Signs of Man and Nature Woods, streams, signs of ancient farming, skilled hands at work in the fields, flocks of sheep: this is the scenario in which you will find yourself during this excursion in the discovery of the surroundings of Il Ciocco. An itinerary that twists and turns, for the most part, inside the ancient San Quirico family homestead from which we will enter and exit several times. A variegated mosaic where the careful observer may be able to catch sight of the buzzard, deer and other wild animals. If conditions allow, it is possible to continue the excursion and reach the exposed gravel bed of the Serchio River adding a fascinating piece of mosaic tile to the variety of environments visited. In this case, we may have our lunch by the river and after a brief break head back to the starting point. The hiking time is about 2.5 hours (6 km 3.7 miles) for an average hiker; with the alternative route, lunch by the river and an in depth visit of the fluvial environment, the excursion may last a full day about 3.5 hours of actual walking time (9 km 5.6 miles). 5 The Apennines by Night: Across Woods and Meadows in The Deep of The Night Suggestive night walks in the woods, the sounds of nature, the sky and its phenomena, the lights of the villages and encounters with nocturnal animals make this an unforgettable and unique experience. After meeting at the Il Ciocco and a brief transfer by car to gain altitude, we will move along forest roads and paths between woods and meadows of boundless beauty. The transfer back to the starting point will take about half an hour by car. The hiking time is about 3 hours (8 km 5 miles) for an average hiker.
