2 Questions and answers Is the trip for me? YES! This trip is suitable for people of all ages. The one thing everyone has in common is a sense of adventure and the desire to do something challenging for a great cause! Some people will come with friends or family but most people won t know anyone on the trip so everyone will be in the same situation all welcome! How fit do I need to be? People from all walks of life will take part in this challenge and most people will be exactly like you. But it s vital that you train so that you get the most out of the trek. We will send you a suggested training plan and are on hand to help you with your training tips. Will you help me? YES! We have a dedicated event manager on hand from the time that you register through to the time you go on the trip. The confirmation pack you will be sent when you reserve your place will cover everything you ll need to know. We are always just a phone call away and our aim is to make the trip as enjoyable as possible from start to finish! We even organise a get-together for everyone going on the trip so you can meet all your fellow trekkers and swap training and fundraising ideas! What s the food like? We ll enjoy delicious Peruvian specialities such as local fish and lamb dishes with a few European additions! Vegetarian diets can be catered for. Will I be able to raise the sponsorship money? YES! As long as you allow plenty of time you ll find that you will have no trouble raising the minimum amount - and then some! To get you started we have suggested a few simple fundraising ideas in this brochure, but remember we will be on hand to help you every step of the way and you can call us at any time for any more hints and tips to help make your fundraising fun and easy! Can I stay on in Peru for longer? YES! For a nominal administration fee your flight can be extended (subject to availability). This will give you the opportunity to discover more of this amazing country independently. What do I need to bring? NO specialist kit required! We ll send you a full packing list when you register. Will you carry my luggage whilst I m trekking? Porters or mules will carry your main luggage along the trail. You ll just need to carry those essentials like water, sun tan lotion and a camera! 3 Facts and figures Registration Fee: All our fundraising trips require a registration fee to be paid on booking please see the enclosed Reservation Form for details (1) Minimum sponsorship: We ask you to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship to take part in this trip please see the enclosed Reservation Form for details (2) No. of days: 10 days including 5 days of trekking (8/9 hours a day) Accommodation: Hotels either side of the trek and tents during the trek Temperature: Usually C during the day, however the temperature will get a lot cooler at night. What s included: Flights and all internal travel, accommodation, all meals on trekking days, water, refreshments, guides, a doctor and medical support. (4) Notes: 1. The registration fee is non-refundable. 2. The first 80% of the sponsorship level is due 12 weeks before the event. 3. All fundraising incurs costs. The tour costs are approximately 50% of the minimum sponsorship level. Costs are confirmed 8 weeks before departure. 4. All participants are responsible for their own passports, visas (not required if UK citizen), vaccinations and travel insurance which you must have. 4 How to raise the money... THINK BIG! Start by asking everyone you know the more people you ask, the more you will raise! Try to get payment upfront to halve the effort, and ALWAYS start each sponsorship form with a generous sponsor as this will set a high standard for the rest. (It really does work!) Ask your employer to sponsor you, too many companies actually match pound for pound! The average sponsorship is 3,500. Here are some ideas: Arrange a 10 menu at a local restaurant on one 200 of their quiet nights and charge 10 friends 20! (Do this twice as it s so easy) Hold a karaoke in your local pub for a percentage 200 of the drinks sales Three car boot sales (get your family and friends to 300 have a clear out!) Ask your local or old school to hold a non-uniform day 200 Place collection boxes in 5 outlets 200 Ask friends and family to take part in a local 200 sponsored walk/fun run or maybe even organise your own Hold a quiz night with raffle 250 Dinner party or barbecue for 20 friends who 300 each pay 15 Hold a skills auction where you rope in friends 300 with certain skills (hairdressing / reflexology etc) to donate their skills for free Persuade a friend to shave their head/legs/sit in 200 a bath of custard! Two Friday night Three-legged Pub Crawls 300 Ask 10 close friends to write to everyone they know 300 Collect at a local football ground/supermarket 200 (get permission!) Ask 5 business clients or suppliers for Ask friends and family for sponsorship money 200 instead of Birthday/Christmas presents TOTAL 3,500! Tell the world! You are doing something quite amazing make sure you tell EVERYONE and let your local newspaper/radio know, too! 5 The itinerary Day 1 Fly London Lima Depending on the airline schedule you may stay in Lima tonight or fly directly to Cusco. Day 2 Arrive Cusco Morning arrival in Cusco. Once we are settled into the hotel the day is yours to relax and explore the sites of this beautiful city whilst adjusting to the altitude and watching the world go by in one of the many cafés in the Plaza de Armas. There will be have a trip briefing later today to help you prepare for the coming days. Day 3 Tambo Machay Cusco Today we will start our trekking at the ancient ruins of Tambo Machay the ancient ruins high above Cusco. We pass some of the amazing Inca sites in the surrounding countryside as we walk downhill to Sacsayhuaman, the huge and impressive Inca ruin on the outskirts of Cusco. As well as the stunning scenery around us, today s trek gives us a great opportunity to acclimatise to the altitude. Trekking time approx 5 hours Day 4 Cusco - Lares - Kunkani We start our day with a bus journey to the mountain town of Lares (at 3650m) here we have lunch and can visit the local hot springs. In the afternoon we hike to the town of Kunkani, this takes approximately four hours and is a lovely introduction into the life of the local Peruvians who live in these remote areas. Trekking time approx 4 hours Day 5 Kunkani - Cruzcasa - Chacchapata Today after breakfast we will begin our hike to Cruzcasa pass (at 4200 metres). From here we can see the highest peak in the mountain range Mount Veronica, at 5,800 metres she towers above us. Lunch is taken at the beautiful lake Yanacocha and here we have a chance to relax taking in the stunning scenery. After lunch we continue down to the local town of Wacawasi where we can visit the local families and their houses. After our visit we start our final climb of the day to our campsite situated at 3900 metres. Trekking time approx 7 hours Day 6 Chaccphapata Hatun Paso Yanahuara Alto We start today by leaving behind the villages and towns and continue our journey through the mountains and forests of this amazing country. Our first challenge of the day is a hike up the mountain of Hatun Paso (4600m) from here the summit, the magical Pumahuanca (5600m), comes into view above us. We then change our course down the mountain to Aurora lake and then on to Yuraq lake. We turn into the Quena forest where we stop in the shade for our lunch. After lunch we carry on our course down hill still through the forest to Yanahuara Alto (3100m). Trekking time approx 7 hours. Day 7 Yanahuara Alto Agua Calientes - Machu Picchu We wake this morning happy in the knowledge that our exertions today will be rewarded with a visit to the site of Machu Picchu. The morning starts with a short walk to the local town of Yanahuara where we take a bus to the Ollantaytambo train station. This breath taking train journey one of the highest in the world takes us to Aguas Calientes where we take a short bus journey to the site of Machu Picchu. The ruins of Machu Picchu, rediscovered in 1911, are one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. While the Inca people certainly used the Andean mountain top erecting many hundreds of stone structures from the early 1400 s, legends and myths indicate that Machu Picchu (meaning Old Peak ) was revered as a sacred place from a far earlier time. Whatever its origins, the Incas turned the site into a small but extraordinary city. After a tour of the site you will have free time to relax and take in this amazing spectacle. Day 8 Free day After a good night s sleep close to this incredible wonder of the world we board the morning train back to Ollantaytambo, then talking a bus for the final two hour journey back to Cusco. This afternoon is free for you to choose either to relax or to explore the city before your final night celebration dinner with your fellow hikers and a chance to reminisce about the weeks hiking and spectacular scenery. Day 9 Cusco Lima UK Its time to say goodbye to Cusco and the mountains today as you fly back to Lima and onwards to the UK. Day 10 Arrive UK.
