This section is designed to give you a better understanding of the key areas that affect your spa, water quality and sanitiser effectiveness. WATER BALANCE Water balance refers to the ph, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness level of the spa water. These act together and have an effect on water quality, equipment and your sanitiser. They should be checked weekly and maintained in accordance with the spa manufacturer s instructions. Generally, water is regarded as either balanced, corrosive or scaling. Balanced water refers to water whereby the recommended ph, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness levels are achieved. Corrosive water usually refers to water with a low ph that is acidic. This will significantly shorten the life of equipment in your spa and may also make water uncomfortable for bathers either in aggressive fuming or skin irritation. Scaling water refers to water where the ph is generally too high and can lead to cloudy water and calcium deposits forming in pipes and around equipment. Failure to maintain recommended water balance will void spa and equipment warranty. SANITISER The primary purpose of a sanitiser is to kill potentially harmful bacteria in your spa. Heated water provides a fertile environment for bacteria to thrive in, and your sanitiser is your defence against infections. Always dose accordingly and never use your spa without an effective sanitiser. Failure to use chemicals in accordance with instructions will void spa and equipment warranty. FILTRATION There is no sanitiser system that alone can provide sparkling water. It must be used in conjunction with effective filtration. Your filter cartridges remove oxidised organic debris and suspended matter from the spa, providing clear, sparkling water. Your filtration system should be run in accordance with manufacturer s recommendations to ensure optimum clarity, however it may need to be increased to compensate for higher bather loads. A filter cartridge will only hold a certain amount of debris, before flow rates and filter effectiveness will diminish. Filters should be cleaned every 5-10 person hours or every week even if spa not being used. Filter cartridges should also be replaced yearly. Filtration cycle should be operatied for a minimum of 4hours per day. FILTRATION PUMP Filtration (circulation) Pumps are crucial for moving the water through your filter to remove any debris floating in your spa, leaving your water crystal clear. Your spa may be fitted with one of the following: You may have a small circulation pump which is often known as a filtration pump. This is not a boost pump/high powered jet. You may have a 2 speed pump. The slow speed is for filtering and the second speed is for massage enabling a higher water flow through jets. Failure to regularly clean and replace your filter cartridge will void spa and equipment warranty. 2 USER GUIDE CRYSTAL WATERS POOL AND SPA SOLUTIONS 3

5 TREAT A NEW SPA, SWIM SPA OR HOT TUB WITH CRYSTAL WATERS ALWAYS ADD ONE CHEMICAL AT A TIME AND RUN FILTRATION PUMP (See Page 3) FOR REQUIRED TIME BETWEEN EACH DOSE. DO NOT RUN BOOST PUMPS/HIGH SPEED JETS WHEN PUTTING IN CHEMICALS. *THIS MEANS WHEN ADDING CHEMICALS TO WATER HAVE AS LITTLE TURBULENCE AS POSSIBLE. 1. Fill spa, swim spa or hot tub, via filter box to prevent air locks. Leave hardcover off spa when treating spa. 2. Add 50gms per 1,000 litres of CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CHLORINE REMOVER premixed in a bucket of water to dissolve. Run filtration pump on low (See Page 3 NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets) and add the dissolved chlorine remover into spa water, run filtration pump for 2 hours prior to adding any other chemical. 3. Check ph, Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness level. The recommended level of ph is between The recommended level of Alkalinity is between ppm and the recommended level of Calcium Hardness is between ppm. Use CRYSTAL WATERS ph AND ALKALINITY ENHANCER or CRYSTAL WATERS SPA ph REDUCER to adjust ph and Alkalinity if necessary. * See full testing procedure on back page. Use CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CALCIUM ENHANCER to increase Calcium if necessary and run filtration pump for 20 min, before adding any other chemical. 4. Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA BOOST at 50gms per 1,000 ltrs. Run filtration pump on low (NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets) for 1 hour before adding any other chemical. 5. Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA SANITISER at 60ml per 1,000 ltrs, into a bucket of water then add to spa slowly. Run filtration pump on low (NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets). Run for 20mins before adding any other chemical. (Adding Sanitiser at the same time as other chemicals can produce cloudy water or brown scum). 6. Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CLARIFIER at 60ml per 1,000 ltrs. Run filtration pump on low (NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets). Run for a minimum of 4 hours, or until water is clear. IMPORTANT POINTS More is NOT BETTER - DO NOT OVERDOSE, always follow instructions for the recommended dosage. Overdosing can cause cloudy water and/or scum line. ALWAYS ADD ONE CHEMICAL AT A TIME AND RUN FILTRATION PUMP FOR REQUIRED TIME BETWEEN EACH DOSE. DO NOT RUN BOOST PUMPS / HIGH SPEED JETS WHEN PUTTING IN CHEMICALS. *THIS MEANS WHEN ADDING CHEMICALS TO WATER, HAVE AS LITTLE TURBULENCE AS POSSIBLE. A light brown foam around the waterline may occur, depending on the quality of the water source. This is a normal reaction as the Shock oxidizes water impurities. Simply wipe off with Spa Pad as soon as you see a scum line forming. For a persistent brown line ADD A FURTHER DOSE OF CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CHLORINE REMOVER. CRYSTAL WATERS is NOT compatible with chlorine or bromine based products. DO NOT ADD THESE to spa, swim spa or hot tub. Adding Crystal Water chemicals to water with chlorine will produce cloudy water and a severe scum line and affect the quality of the water. Always remove cover when adding chemicals and LEAVE UNCOVERED FOR AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR, to allow spa to breathe. After heavy bather use, or if your water seems cloudy after use. Add Spa Boost to help burn off excess body fats and run the water clean cycle button if your spa is fitted with this feature. Clean your filters after heavy bathing, or after 5-10 hours use to ensure they do not become clogged or every week even if spa is not being used. The main cause of cloudy water is dirty filters. NEVER MIX DIFFERENT CHEMICALS TOGETHER. ALWAYS ADD ONE CHEMICAL AT A TIME. 8 USER GUIDE CRYSTAL WATERS POOL AND SPA SOLUTIONS 9

6 CONVERT AN EXISTING SPA, SWIM SPA OR HOT TUB TO CRYSTAL WATERS Converting an existing spa to the CRYSTAL WATERS POOL AND SPA SOLUTIONS TM chlorine and bromine free system is an easy process. Soon we ll have you enjoying the benefits of no chlorine odour, and a sanitising system that is gentle on both you and your pocket! By following the simple steps below you ll soon be back in your spa. 1. Remove cover from spa, swim spa or hot tub. 2. Remove filter cartridges and thoroughly clean using CRYSTAL WATERS SPA INSTANT FILTER KLENZ and set aside. 3. Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA PIPE KLENZ at 250ml per 1000 ltrs, and then run Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets. (Ensure Air Venturi/Air Blowers are turned off or excessive foaming may occur) for 2 hours and drain and flush. See label for full instructions. 4. Remove foam residue from spa, drain spa then thoroughly wipe with soft cloth. For severe foaming we recommend a second fill, run boost pumps for 10 minutes, drain and flush without CRYSTAL WATERS SPA PIPE KLENZ. 5. Refill spa through filter box with fresh water. Re-install filter cartridges. 6. Now follow instructions on page 8 - Treat a new spa, swim spa or hot tub with Crystal Waters. DO NOT RUN BOOST PUMPS/HIGH SPEED JETS WHEN PUTTING IN CHEMICALS. *THIS MEANS WHEN ADDING CHEMICALS TO WATER, HAVE AS LITTLE TURBULENCE AS POSSIBLE. 7 MAINTAIN A SPA, SWIM SPA OR HOT TUB WITH CRYSTAL WATERS Check ph, Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness level once a week. The ideal level of ph is between The ideal level of Alkalinity is between ppm and the ideal level of Calcium Hardness is between ppm. Use CRYSTAL WATERS ph AND ALKALINITY ENHANCER to increase ph. Use CRYSTAL WATERS SPA ph REDUCER to decrease ph. When adjusting ph it is better to use HALF RECOMMENDED DOSE at a time rechecking after 1 hour. Use CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CALCIUM ENHANCER to increase Calcium. Maintaining a CRYSTAL WATERS spa, swim spa, or hot tub is a simple, easy 3 STEP process: STEP 1: Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA SANITISER once per week at 60ml per 1,000 ltrs, run filtration pump on low (See Page 3 NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets) for 20mins before adding any other chemical. STEP 2: Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CLARIFIER once per week at 60ml per 1,000 ltrs, run filtration pump on low (See Page 3 NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets) for 20mins before adding any other chemical. STEP 3: Add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA BOOST once per week at 20gms per 1,000 ltrs, run filtration pump on low (See Page 3 NOT the Boost Pumps/High Speed Jets) for 20mins before use. Add Crystal Waters Spa Boost at 20gms per 1,000 ltrs per person after each use if water appears cloudy or hazy. Use CRYSTAL WATERS SPA INSTANT FILTER KLENZ to clean filter cartridges once per week OR after 10 person hours of spa use. This means if 4 people use the spa for 1 hour that is the equivalent of 4 person hours. If people drink alcohol in the spa they significantly increase the amount of perspiration and body fats in the spa. These body fats are trapped in the filter cartridge until it becomes clogged and then cloudy water will result. For optimum water clarity filter cartridges should be cleaned afterwards. DO NOT RUN BOOST PUMPS/HIGH SPEED JETS WHEN PUTTING IN CHEMICALS. *THIS MEANS WHEN ADDING CHEMICALS TO WATER, HAVE AS LITTLE TURBULENCE AS POSSIBLE. 8 TROUBLE SHOOTING MANY PROBLEMS CAN OFTEN BE ATTRIBUTED TO OLD FILTERS THAT NO LONGER PERFORM AT THEIR OPTIMUM. WE RECOMMEND FILTER CARTRIDGES SHOULD BE REPLACED YEARLY. CLOUDY WATER Cloudy water can be caused by one of 4 issues: 1. Incorrect water balance. CHECK AND ADJUST ph TO BETWEEN CHECK AND ADJUST ALKALINITY TO BETWEEN PPM. CHECK AND ADJUST CALCIUM HARDNESS TO BETWEEN PPM. 2. Incorrect dosing of CRYSTAL WATERS SPA SANITISER and CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CLARIFIER. Either too much or too little can cause cloudy water. Always dilute sanitiser and add slowly to spa. TEST SANITISER LEVEL. (15-20 PPM) IF SPA HAS BEEN OVERDOSED, REMOVE 1/3RD OF WATER AND TOP UP WITH FRESH WATER, ADD 25GMS PER 1,000 LITRES OF SPA CHLORINE REMOVER, RUN FILTRATION PUMP (NOT BOOST PUMPS/HIGH SPEED JETS) FOR 20MINS THEN RE-TEST AFTER 24HOURS. 3. Blocked filter cartridges. REMOVE FILTER CARTRIDGES AND CLEAN WITH CRYSTAL WATERS SPA INSTANT FILTER KLENZ. SHOCK DOSE SPA WITH DOUBLE DOSE OF CRYSTAL WATERS BOOST WITH FILTRATION PUMP ONLY AND OPERATE FILTER FOR 12 HOURS. LEAVE COVER OFF SPA. 4. Excessive body oils or inorganic debris in water SHOCK DOSE SPA WITH 50gms /1,000 ltrs OF CRYSTAL WATERS BOOST AND OPERATE FILTRATION PUMP FOR 24 HOURS. LEAVE COVER OFF SPA. REPEAT IF NECESSARY. 5. Build up of body fats in pipe work. USE CRYSTAL WATERS SPA PIPE KLENZ TO CLEAN INTERIOR PIPE WORK. RUN FOR 2 HOURS, DRAIN AND FLUSH SPA, THEN THOROUGHLY CLEAN. BROWN SCUM LINE A brown scum line can be caused by: Excess body fats. Water contaminated with chlorine. Overdosing of chemicals. High water agitation when adding chemicals. Insufficient time elapsed between adding chemicals. Sanitiser flocking with impurities in the spa water. TO TREAT: ADD 25GMS PER 1,000 LTRS OF CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CHLORINE REMOVER AND RUN FILTER FOR 4 HOURS WITH COVER OFF AND USE SPA PAD TO REMOVE SCUM LINE. IF YOU SEE BROWN SCUM FORMING WIPE OFF IMMEDIATELY USING SPA PAD. FOAMING Foaming is usually caused by either incorrect water balance or an excess build up of body fats in the filter cartridge or pipe work. ADD 10mls OF CRYSTAL WATERS SPA ANTI FOAM TO STOP FOAMING. (This however will only mask the problem and not eliminate it.) Further steps to correct problem CLEAN FILTER CARTRIDGE USING CRYSTAL WATERS SPA INSTANT FILTER KLENZ. IF FOAMING PERSISTS, USE CRYSTAL WATERS SPA PIPE KLENZ DRAIN AND REFILL SPA. GREEN TINGE Spa Boost can sometimes cause the water to develop a green tinge. This is particularly apparent in white spas. This is cosmetic only and the spa is completely safe to use as long as the water balance levels are correct. To reduce to the green appearance you can add 25gms per 1000L of Chlorine remover. IF ALL ELSE FAILS, DUMP WATER AND REFILL AS INSTRUCTIONS ON PAGE USER GUIDE CRYSTAL WATERS POOL AND SPA SOLUTIONS 15

9 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION SEE OUR FAQ SECTION AT: CRYSTAL WATERS Testing Procedure We recommend spa water is regularly tested professionally. * Water balance levels are recommendations only. Always balance water in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Water should be checked when spa is first filled and weekly thereafter. 2 test kits are provided with the CRYSTAL WATERS range. The first tests for biguanide (CRYSTAL WATERS Spa Sanitiser) and ph. The second test kit is a dip stick type test that tests for ph, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Bromine. DISREGARD THE BROMINE TEST. IT IS NOT RELEVANT FOR CRYSTAL WATERS. Use the dip stick test for checking Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness levels. Sanitiser (Biguanide) level should be maximum 15-20ppm. To increase sanitiser level add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA SANITISER. DO NOT OVERDOSE ph level should be between To increase ph use CRYSTAL WATERS ph AND ALKALINITY ENHANCER * Do not add more than 40gms per 1000 ltrs at a time of Alkalinity Enhancer. To decrease ph use CRYSTAL WATERS ph AND ALKALINITY REDUCER Total Alkalinity should be between ppm To increase Total Alkalinity, add CRYSTAL WATERS ph AND ALKALINITY ENHANCER *Do not add more than 40gms per 1000 ltrs at a time of Alkalinity Enhancer. Calcium Hardness should be between ppm. (This is based on acrylic and fibreglass spas only. For all other surfaces contact your spa/pool supplier.) To increase Calcium Hardness level add CRYSTAL WATERS SPA CALCIUM ENHANCER To re-order: AUGUST 2013
