The competition will consist of five medal events, summarised below: A total of 160 athletes, including 80 men and 80 women, may take part in the Badminton competition. The rules The Badminton competition will be held in accordance with the editions of the following documents that are in force at the time of the Games: Badminton World Federation s (BWF) Laws and General Competition Regulations available at (Update 2015/2016) Scoring Medal events (5) Men (2) Women (2) Mixed (1) Singles Singles Doubles Doubles Doubles A Badminton match will consist of the best of three games to 21. A game is won by a player/pair, which first scores 21 points, with the exception of the following cases: If the score becomes 20-all, the side which gains a two-point lead first, wins the game If the score is 29-all, players/pairs who scores the 30th point wins the game. Clothing and equipment Clothing and equipment used by athletes and other participants in the Badminton competition must comply with the following documents: Laws and Regulations and Approved Equipment by the BWF (Update 2015/2016) European Games Rules on Advertising, Demonstrations and Propaganda Page 2

3 Each article of clothing may only have visible lettering in capital letters in the Roman alphabet and in one single colour contrasting with that of the shirt. The mandatory sequence to follow on the shirt from top to bottom is a player s name followed by the NOC name underneath. The letter sizes must maintain a minimum height of 6 centimetres and a maximum height of 10 centimetres for players names and a height of 5 centimetres for a NOC name. Competition format For all events at Baku 2015 there will be a group stage, with four players/pairs in each group. All the players/pairs will compete against each other, with the top two from each group qualifying for the elimination stage. There will be a draw after the group stage for the elimination round. The table below illustrates the formats in which the Badminton competition will take place. Sport-specific events Competition Draw Details of the competition draw will be communicated to NOCs at a later stage. Team Officials Meeting The Team Officials Meeting will be held on 21 June at the competition venue, the Baku Sports Hall. The exact time will be confirmed and communicated to NOCs at a later stage. The venue The Baku Sports Hall is an existing venue that will receive a full refurbishment for the Baku 2015 European Games. The venue has been used for Volleyball Championships in the past, and is currently under construction and will be ready in February Located close to the Baku Boulevard, this City Cluster Venue will be home to the Table Tennis and Badminton competitions at Games time. Singles Group Play Stage Medal events (5) Doubles Group Play Stage Field of play The field of play will contain three courts. The competition areas and all equipment will be presented in accordance with the BWF Laws of Badminton and Regulations. Round of 16 Quarter-finals Semi-finals Final Quarter-finals Semi-finals Final Facilities The main warm-up area, containing one warm-up court and three practice courts, will be available in a temporary structure located next to the Baku Sports Hall. An athletes lounge, which will include services such as an athlete refreshment station, the Sport Information Desk, television with an in-venue live sports feed and Wi-Fi Page 3

4 A broadcast mixed zone and an I-Zone (the I-Zone replaces the press mixed zone and media conference room at a competition venue) A doping control station Medical facilities and services such as field-of-play response team, spectator response teams and ambulance staff. Each venue will have at least one medical person with Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification Physiotherapy services featuring internationally trained physiotherapists A Sport Information Desk, offering services including distribution of general sport information, results and other key competition information Changing rooms and showers (separate facilities for men and women) Racket re-stringing services, available at the warm-up area at the new temporary venue Venue familiarisation Athletes will be familiarised with the venue one day prior to the start of competition. All athletes will be able to practice on the field of play at the competition venue on 21 June. The finalised training schedule will be communicated to NOCs in due course. Qualification and entry All information on qualification and entries for Badminton can be found in the Badminton qualification system, distributed by BEGOC. NOCs should check online for regular updates to these qualification criteria, which will be made available to all NOCs on the e-qəzet. Training Training for the Badminton competition will take place from 19 June to 21 June at Training Complex 2. Detailed information on the training allocation policy will be communicated to NOCs at a later stage. There will be four training courts available to athletes at Training Complex 2. After 21 June a temporary structure at the Baku Sports Hall will be used as a warm-up and training venue. There will be one warm-up court and three training courts at this facility. All training equipment will be approved by BWF, and will comply with BWF s General Competition Regulations. Transport The preliminary travel time from the Athletes Village to the Baku Sports Hall is 35 minutes. All travel times are subject to being refined in tandem with the Road Infrastructure delivery. Weather Due to its location on the southwest Absheron Peninsula, Baku is characterised by its warm temperatures and strong winds all year long, and summers are usually hot and dry. Based on statistics from recent years, the mean temperature is approximately 23 C (73 F) in June with around 15 hours of daylight. In June, the prevailing wind direction is from the north, with a mean wind speed of 6.5 m/s. Page 4
