5 COMMUNITY PROFILE The year 1909 marked a new era for South Florida as Palm Beach County departed from Dade County becoming Florida s 47th county. Standing alone, Palm Beach County has 2,023 square miles of land and is the second largest county in the state of Florida. The magnificent county of Palm Beach was named after the many coconut palms that lined the 45 + miles of Atlantic coastline dating back to the mid 1800 s. Since then, Palm Beach County has developed into a modern paradise rich with culture, history, heritage, education and entertainment. Palm Beach County contains 37 municipalities including Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, and Wellington. West Palm Beach is among the largest cities with a population of 82,102 and Wellington is the fastest growing city in the county. Each municipality has contributed to the rapid growth of this amazingly diverse area. This exciting county is considered "home" by more than 1.1 million people. Palm Beach County has a unique economy that is comprised of several major billion dollar industries. Tourism, agriculture and construction has aided in the development of this diverse area. Tourists help add $1.5 billion dollars to our local economy every year, and western Palm Beach County is home to 11% of the countries sugar supply. New construction costs totaled $1.3 billion dollars in 2002, and increased steadily over the past several years. With the amazing climate Palm Beach County has to offer there are many outdoor activities to keep everyone happy. The classy sports of polo, golf, tennis, boating and the beautiful beaches of sunny south Florida are just moments away. There are an abundance of parks, shops, and entertainment throughout this remarkable county. 1
