2 Welcome Dear Families: I would like to welcome you and your child to our class. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year to help achieve his/her fullest potential. I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Our days and weeks will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow. It is my objective to create an exciting and positive learning environment that addresses the needs of each student. Please make sure your child has all the materials needed for class daily. Each day I will be communicating to you your child s behavior for that day. Please review the behavior chart each day so you are aware of your child s conduct. It is also important that you review the homework daily and initial the homework chart. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, report cards, and parent teacher conferences. 3 Arrival Students will be picked up at the Cafeteria at 8:15 in the morning. If your child is not inside their classroom by 8:20, they will be tardy for school and need to report to the office to receive a tardy pass. Children should enter the classroom all by themselves. Parents are welcome to send in a note with any questions or requesting a conference with the teacher. Any student arriving at school after 8:20 AM is tardy. Excessive tardiness will result in administrative action. Dismissal Students will be dismissed at 1:50 PM. We will walk the students to the designated dismissal area. We must be notified in writing of any changes or special instructions for dismissal. Absences Any time a student returns to school after an absence, a signed note MUST be brought from home. Acceptable excuses for student absences are illness of student, death in the family, a school sponsored event or activity that has been previously approved, or a religious holiday. All other absences are unexcused, i.e. vacations, babysitting, or no explanation. Excessive absences will result in administrative action and will remain on your child s permanent school record. Leaving School Early Students may only be excused from school during regular hours when a parent/guardian or authorized adult with proper identification goes to the main office to pick up the student. Under no circumstances will any student be allowed to leave the school grounds unescorted. Before / After School Care Program Before and After School Care is available at our school. Please contact the Before and After School Care Office for more information. 4 Uniforms School uniforms at Cutler Ridge Elementary are mandatory. Shirts may be: white, light blue, royal blue, navy blue. Long pants, shorts, skirts (with shorts under), skorts or jumpers may be: navy blue, khaki, blue plaid. School Spirit Day will be every Friday. On Fridays, students may wear nice jeans with their Cutler Ridge Elementary t-shirt (sold at the school). Uniforms may be purchased at the place of your choosing (available at BJ s, JCPenny s, Target, Sears, Kmart, and Walmart). If your child has uniforms he/she has outgrown, please donate them to the school office for recycling. Field Trips We may be attending one or more field trips this year. Permission slips will be sent home for your signature. No student will be allowed to go on a field trip away from school without a signed permission slip form. Participation in a field trip is a privilege. Students serve as representatives of the school; therefore, they may be excluded from participation in any trip for reasons relating to behavior and/or conduct. Parents, please keep in mind that students will not be granted a full refund after costs are calculated and collected. Parents wishing to participate, must complete the online volunteer form and be cleared as a school volunteer at the level appropriate for the trip.. Visitors Visitors, including parents, are not permitted to go to the student s classrooms unannounced during school hours because this disrupts normal routine and instructions. For the safety and protection of all students, visitors must register in the office. Parents participating in any classroom function must be cleared as a volunteer first. Volunteers Volunteers in the school provide much needed help and support for students and teachers. Every individual wanting to become a volunteer must go to the office and receive a pin number and complete the online forms. There are many tasks for volunteers in our class and in our school, if you can volunteer please let us know. Tasks we need help with will also be posted outside our classroom for those who are interested to sign up. If you are interested in being a room parent for this school year, please let us know! Each classroom is required to have room parents. The room parent will be expected to be involved in school activities, assist with classroom activities, and participate in special events throughout the year, when requested. We need at least two parents to volunteer for this job. Medications The school office will administer all medications. Please contact the school office if your child is to be given any medicine during school hours. If your child has any medical condition/allergies please let the school office and teachers know immediately. Do not send medicine to school in your child s book bag. This includes cough drops or sore throat lollipops. 4

5 Lunch Students may bring lunch from home in a lunchbox or they may purchase lunch from the school s cafeteria for $2.25. Each student is assigned a lunch number which must be entered daily to purchase a school lunch. You may add monies to your child s lunch account by making a payment in the cafeteria or electronically through Students who have a negative lunch balance will receive an alternate lunch. Students who have a negative lunch balance will not be allowed to participate in any class or school wide activities. A note will be sent home when classroom supplies need to be refilled throughout the year. It is also recommended that the students keep a change of clothes (including shirt, shorts/pants, underwear, socks, and shoes) in a labeled Ziploc bag in their book bags, in case of any bathroom accidents. 5

6 Daily Communication/Home Folder Children will bring folders home each day with a daily behavior chart, home learning, notices, and parent information. Please check these folders daily. This will keep you informed of classroom matters. Your child is responsible for returning this folder to school daily. If your child s folder is lost or damaged during the year, please send a replacement. The behavior chart will either have a stamp/sticker for a successful day or a short note telling you about any problems that occurred. The chart must be initialed by you daily and returned the following day. To discuss questions/concerns please send a note or call (305) Home Learning will be sent home in the home folder daily. The work should be completed and returned the next day. Kindergarten homework includes worksheets, workbook pages, book reports and reading activities. Please plan to spend 30 minutes each night doing homework with your child. Parents are to check completeness, coloring, neatness, and correctness; then sign and return. Incomplete assignments or assignments turned in late will affect your child s participation in classroom activities and grades. Classroom Discipline Plan My classroom discipline plan focuses on helping each child manage his/her own behavior and encouraging independence. Your child deserves a positive educational climate. Behavior is one of the most important elements of the school day. If behavior is out of control, then learning is not possible for your child or other students. Conduct grades will be based on your child s behavior in class. Class Expectations 1. I will follow directions quickly. 2. I will raise my hand and ask permission, before I speak or get out of my seat. 3. I will finish all of my work and try my best. 4. I will respect myself, others and our school. 7 Please check your child s behavior chart daily so that you will be aware of work completion and behavior. Remember to follow through at home by rewarding positive behavior and dealing appropriately with negative behavior. Consistency between home and school is very important! We appreciate your support! Grading Procedures In Kindergarten, students receive grades in the grade book. Students are required to master the curriculum objectives before they can be promoted to the next grade. Other factors include work habits and maturity. If you would like to meet during the year to discuss your child s progress, please call (305) or send a note to schedule a parent conference. The most important work habit in our classroom is that we all "do our best". Assessments Kindergarten administers several assessments throughout the school year. This allows us to study your child s progress as well as determine achievement in various skill areas. Assessments and results can be discussed by requesting a parent teacher conference. Work Samples Student work samples will be sent home regularly so that you may review your child s work and track his/her progress in class. Work sample packets must be reviewed, signed, and returned to continue to receive future work sample packets. To discuss your child s progress or any concerns, please send a note or call (305) , to schedule a conference. Parent Conferences Please send a note with your child or call (305) to request an appointment. We may also request a conference as needed. Conferences are planned to discuss your child s progress and offer your ideas on how to help your child succeed. 7
