We will read a different story each week and students will be responsible for weekly workbook packets. These packets must be answered in complete sentences. All work in fifth grade must be in cursive. There will also be a couple of literature books incorporated into the curriculum. Language Arts/ Writing Mrs. Oder will be teaching this subject. Spelling Mrs. Oder will be teaching this subject. We will learn the historical, physical, economic, and cultural characteristics of the seven continents. Students will keep a portfolio for each unit that will include various worksheets, vocabulary definitions, maps, and other items necessary for test preparation. On the day of each unit test, portfolios will be collected and graded for completion. Science Expansion of last years study of Life, Earth, and Physical Science. There will be weekly hands on activities and experiments that will count as a classwork grade. Religion Our focus this year will be on the Trinity and the Sacraments and include a review of the Ten Commandments, common prayers, bible content, and the saints. 6 Classroom Rules 1. Follow the GOLDEN RULE-Treat others as you wish to be treated. 2. Don t talk or make any other noise during class unless you are told to do so. 3. No talking during tests. 4. Be respectful of class, property and church. 5. No leaving your seat without permission. 6. Sharpen pencils ONLY BEFORE second bell. 7. Play fair, no bullying. 8. Return items you have borrowed. 9. No copying anyone else s work. 10. No throwing papers or pencils or ANYTHING else in the classroom. 11. Be reverent during prayer and in the church. 12. Hang up your jackets and backpacks in the morning. 13. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR CLASS. Student Forms The following pages are examples of student forms that your child will be using this year. Brief explanations of each form are provided below. 1. Conduct Warnings and Uniform Warnings - Filled out by students when they have been given repeated warnings about following classroom rules. Please sign and return to school if your child brings one home. 2. Monday Folders -At the beginning of each week each student will bring home a red Monday Folder which must then be returned with your child the following school day. This folder will contain notices from the office or classroom, your child s work, and a homework notification form. 3. Homework Notification Form - Every Monday Folder will contain a weekly Homework notification form which must be signed by the parent and returned to school on the following school day with your child. If all homework has been completed the appropriate box will be marked. Please be sure to sign and return the form even if all homework has been completed. Any homework not turned in and not given a valid extension, will be noted on this homework diary. After five (5) missing homework assignments have been noted, the student will receive an afterschool detention. Each new quarter, students begin with a blank homework record. 4. Field Trip Permission Slips In advance of any field trips, a permission slip will be sent home in the Monday Folder. Please review the details of the planned field trip, sign, and return the form to school with your student. 6

7 Homework Policy Why is homework so important? I believe that homework is an invaluable tool. Homework helps reinforce what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. How much homework will be assigned? Homework will be assigned nightly. Most assignments will be started during the school day to ensure a thorough understanding of instructions. Each night students will be expected to complete the assigned homework. Most evenings will also include a lesson in the Simple Solutions workbook. These math assignments are critical to our Everyday Math program. Please help to make sure that this work is completed and returned to school the following day. Talking to your child about these assignments will allow you to better understand what we are doing in class and will also give your child a valuable opportunity to communicate what he or she is learning. Additional Homework Assignments begun, but not completed in class will require additional work time at home. Work missed when a child is absent will need to be made up at home or during recesses. (Depending on the circumstances and amount of work missed) Students may be given special projects during the year that will require several hours of work beyond the school day. Students will need to budget their time to finish the projects along with daily work. How will I know what my child s homework is? All students are expected to write down their homework daily in their student agendas, which will be taken home daily. Some assignments such as book reports, reading packets, specialty projects, etc. will be assigned in advance. This means that the children will need to learn to prioritize their time and not leave these assignments to the last minute. What are the 5 th grade homework expectations? All assignments should be neatly and thoughtfully completed. Students may be asked to re-do illegible or sloppy work. All homework is to be completed and turned in by 8:15 am on the due date. How can I help? As a parent, you can help your child by assisting in creating a homework routine. Decide on, with your child, a consistent time and place for homework to be completed each night. A quiet, comfortable place, along with praise and support from you will make homework a positive experience. Asking your child to explain assignments to you will also help them to clarify their own understanding. 7

8 What happens if homework is not completed? Homework will be checked daily. Missing homework must be made up during the student s free time. 10 points will be deducted for each day that the homework is late. Even if the student receives a homework diary they are still responsible for completing the assignment. If a student consistently turns in late assignments or homework, parents will be notified. If there is a legitimate excuse for an incomplete or missing assignment, please send a note to school with your child on the day that the assignment is due. Thanks for your help! Behavior Modification Stars are used as a positive reinforcement rewarded for good behavior, hard work, and extra credit efforts. How do students earn Stars? 1. Good classroom behavior 2. Reports from other teachers about being on task and respectful. 3. Reverence in church 4. Having their agendas completed and signed by a parent What do students do with these Stars? Each star is worth one minute towards a Friday recess. The 5 th grade does not have any scheduled recesses during the week, making a Friday recess especially important. Students are able to earn this recess by working together as a team. When agendas are signed by each student s parents on a particular day they can earn more stars. While stars may be used for positive reinforcement for the class as a whole, sometimes behaviors of individual students must be addressed. After two warnings of inappropriate behavior, a students name will be placed on the board. Students will then spend their lunch time in the classroom. During this time, behavior will be discussed, and solutions will be agreed upon. 8
