IN THE BEGINNING The Origin of Muhammad Adem(Adam) Nūḥ(Noah) Ibrāhīm(Abraham) Ismā'īl(Ishmael) Isḥāq(Isaac) * Abdul-Muttalib Muhammad Marīam(Mary) ʿĪsā(Jesus) * Abraham s wife Sarah & handmaid Hagar vs. Isaac & Ishmael
IN THE BEGINNING (570 A.D.+) Middle-eastern people worshipped 360 pagen gods, the moon god was one of them (Cresent moon icon) Like everywhere else, leadership was typically royalty Religion did not dominate the land before Muhammad Muhammad born in 570 A.D. Mecca Parents die at his age of 6 grandfather assume care At 8 his grandfather dies (Muhammad an orphan) Extended family cares for him (barely street child) Became a merchant reputation of trustworthy (?) At 35 he experiences the Black Stone affair big decision opportunity Gained popularity with the public (Honesty and decision making)
IN THE BEGINNING (570 A.D.+) CONT D Began receiving revelations at the age of 40 Angel Gabriel (610 A.D.) Attempted to start Islam after revelations Started the Quran memorized his visions and ideas Muhammad was illiterate could not document his laws Early on memorization was the only record of the Quran oral society Muhammad assigned two men as his scribes (Memorizers) Qur an defined monotheism in Islam vs. Christians/Jews (Trinity) Started to proselytize occupants of Mecca Often insulted Jews Initially viewed Christians and Jews as allies After being ignored by Jews he became hostile toward them
LOVE TO HATE Migrated to Medina in 622 no longer welcomed in Mecca (Hijri calendar Hajj pilgrimage ) Began his new thinking Love to Hate Raids conducted as retribution for Meccan behavior toward Muhammad Used Muslim migrants (from Mecca gang) to raid Meccan caravans Delivered Qur'anic verses permitting the Muslims to raid Muslims acquire wealth, power, and prestige (33.27) Muhammad's wife accused of adultery four witnesses! (Rape) Attacks and takes over Mecca in 630 Kills (beheads) 700 Jews Attacks Arabs in east Christians and Jews surrender and refuse to convert
LOVE TO HATE CONT D Agree to pay jizya The 1 st caliphate was created..! Muhammad preached Islam for initial 13 years got 150 followers Next 10 years = 10,000 new Muslims per year! 100K new followers! The last 9 years he is involved in events of violence every 6 weeks Lesson learned: Politics (sword) 1000% more effective than religion Performs his first Islamic pilgrimage in 632 Muhammad dies in June of 632 and buried in Medina Muhammad replaced by caliphs To be continued
DEVELOPMENT OF THE QURAN Definitions and Random Points Quran, Qur an, or Koran? Moslem or Muslim? Year 2000 change Began as a verbal (memorized) document Muslims believe the Quran is complete and has no errors Muhammad is perfect Quran documented on paper years after death of Muhammad by Uthman (3 rd caliph) Reorganized by chapter length longest to shortest (Previously chronological order) all past documentation destroyed End result was randomization of Quran nullifies abrogation!! (See later) Meccan vs. Madinan views religious vs. political
DEVELOPMENT OF THE QURAN Around 650 AD the Quran is finished & copies made Islamists claim that Quran rewritten due to language used incorrect?? Their Trilogy Quran, Sunna, Hadith Make up Islam Quran written in Surahs (Chapters) 86 = Meccan; 28 Medinan Before and after migration from Mecca Hadith quotes of Islamic prophet Muhammad verbatim on any matter (short stories) Sunna Muhammad s verbally transmitted record of the teachings, and deeds Quran is 14% sacred text (Allah) Sunna and Hadith = 86% Muhammad Christianity first Muhammad studied Christian views/teachings
DEVELOPMENT OF THE QURAN CONT D Jihad My Stuggle, Mein Kaumf - My Stuggle Kafir = unbeliever (one who covers or conceals truth), aka, infidel Kafir synonyms: polytheists, idolaters, People of the book (Christians & Jews), atheists, agnostics, and pagans all treated the same! 64% of Quran devoted to Kafirs 81% with Muhammad s struggle with them 32% of Hadith devoted to kafirs Abrogation = Later verse supersedes earlier verse (dualistic logic) Quran 2:219 Muslims must be tolerant of Christians and Jews Quran 9:29 Attack Christians and Jews until they pay jizya tax or kill them
DEVELOPMENT OF THE QURAN CONT D Dualistic plan Rules for women, not men non-muslims vs. Muslims 49K+ words about women; 93% low status; 0.13% high
THE FIVE(6) PILLARS OF ISLAM Summarized in the hadith of Gabriel 1. Shahadah: declaring there is only one God and Muhammad is God's Messenger 2. Salat: ritual prayer five times a day 3. Zakat: giving 2.5% of one s savings (total assets) to the poor and needy 4. Sawm: fasting and self-control during the holy month of Ramadan 5. Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if one is able 6. Jihad(6): conversion of kafir (unbeliever) to Islam through force or fear #6 added when Muhammad migrated from Mecca
SUNNI VS. SHIA Muslims = 1.6B vs. world population = 7B (23%) 60% Muslim population in Asia; About 20% in Middle East & North Africa Shiites (Shia or Shi'a): 10-13% of Muslim population Lands Iran (90% - 1/3 of world Shias), Pakistan, India and Iraq 300,000+ Shias estimated living in North America Shias include followers of: Ithna Asharis (aka, Twelvers), Ismailis, Zaydis, Alevis and Alawites Only believe in Hadiths accepted by Shia Islamic scholars
Twelver defined: SUNNI VS. SHIA CONT D The largest branch of Shia Islam Twelver refers to its adherents' belief in twelve divinely ordained leaders The 12 th Imam is to be the last (Armageddon) Iran Sunnis (Sunnites): 87-90% of Muslim population Sunnis include followers of: Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki, Wahhabi (Salafi) & Hanbali
SUNNI VS. SHIA CONT D GREEN = SUNNI, RED = SHIA
CALIPHS, POLITICS & RELIGION First caliph (after Muhammad death), Abu Bakr Umar ibn al-khattab (son of Abu) the second caliph Uthman ibn Affan chosen as the third caliph Problem! At the time of the 3 rd caliph choice, two factions were at odds Shia believed Ali ibn Abi Talib should have been chosen Choices were political (Sunni) vs. religious (Shia) Regardless, they still don t agree today Shias captured as slaves and murdered for centuries Conflict continues today since 700 s A.D.
