Introduction Biomass burning Biomass burning Martin et al. (2006) Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 3 / 20
Introduction Biomass burning Freitas et al. (2005) Aerosols from biomass burning in Amazon and Central Brazil are advected via LLJ to La Plata Basin in the dry season. Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 4 / 20
Objective Objective Investigate the relationship between the aerosols, that come from biomass burning of Amazon region and central of Brazil, and rainfall over the La Plata Basin for September, October, November and December. Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 5 / 20
Data Data Precipitation (mm/h) from TRMM-3B42 between 1999 and 2012 (0.25 x0.25-3h); Daily AOD (440 nm) from AERONET; Alta Floresta ( ); Ji Paraná ( ); Rio Branco ( ); Santa Cruz ( ); Campo Grande ( ); Cuiabá - Miranda ( ). Reanalyses 2 from NCEP/DOE ( ). Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 6 / 20
Methodology Filtering Keep cases with north wind over the blue rectangle; Keep cases with minimum rainfall over red rectangle (avoid cleaning up the airmass during the path); Mean wind (m/s) 10 S 9 m/s 15 S Averaged rainfall rate (mm/day) Latitude 20 S 25 S 30 S 35 S 70 W 65 W 60 W 55 W 50 W 45 W Longitude Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 7 / 20

Conclusions Conclusions Bin analyses Aerosols effect is detected for rainfall fraction > 40%; For weak ω, large AOD loads tend to suppress rainfall. Combined EOF 1st EOF explains 40% of variance dynamic forcing; 2nd EOF explains 30% of variance aerosol forcing suppress rainfall. Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 18 / 20
Conclusions What next? Use numerical modeling to understand the effect of advected aerosol on the rainfall of MCS over La Plata Basin. Radiative effect; Microphysic effect. Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 19 / 20
Conclusions Thank you! Gláuber Camponogara (IAG/USP) Interaction aerosols/rainfall CHUVA project 20 / 20
