Early in the development process for a new SVL gear set, we first develop an in-depth computer-generated gear summary. Through this process, we are able to establish the necessary tooth proportions that will help deliver reduced noise, vibration and harshness over the long haul for your vehicle. In addition, this initial process gives us the information that we need to develop the right tooling to take us through the manufacturing process. Forging Ahead. The next step in the process is to create the dies from which we will forge the gear blanks. The forging process enables us to achieve the optimal grain flow within the material, which results in a stronger gear for your vehicle. We forge these gear blanks from alloy steel, which is heated to 2100, a temperature that makes it possible to shape the steel without reaching its melting point. Once the preliminary shape of the gear has been formed, we then put the metal through a process known as normalizing. The gear is reheated to 1700 and then slowly cooled, and in the process the part achieves maximum hardness. In Dana labs, gearing is put to the test every day. 4 Cutting Our Teeth. As you might guess, cutting the teeth of the gear accurately is absolutely essential to providing the smoothest possible ride. The precision meshing of the gears is a critical step toward cutting down on the noise, vibration and harshness that can not only lead to a rough ride, but can also contribute to the premature failure of the part. SVL gears are meticulously cut to standards that ensure the level of accuracy that meets the needs of the aftermarket. Bring the Heat. SVL parts are heat treated in a computer-controlled furnace that maintains a precise temperature at a consistent level throughout the process. In doing so, we are better able to deliver the strength and durability that our customers demand. In addition, the heat treating process uses surface carburization, in which carbon atoms are implanted into the surface of the steel through extreme heat. The result is extra wear resistance over the life of the part. The Finishing Touch. In the final steps, the ring gear is mated to the pinion through a process known as gear lapping. Using a computercontrolled lapping machine, the ring and pinion are run together to provide a perfect meshing. In addition, an abrasive made from silicon carbide is run over the surfaces of the gearing for a micro-fine finish. Before lapping, SVL gearing undergoes precision grinding to ensure tight tolerances for the bearing diameters, as well as tight connectivity and cylindricity among the individual components. The result is ring and pinion gearing that delivers performance that meets standards set by Dana, one of the world s most trusted suppliers.
