Outlook and Summary Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 2
Trends in Lighting Lighting going digital Move towards a SSL Semiconductor-like value chain Liberation of Light New form factors, novel applications, user centered and ambient More illumination Drive for efficiency up (Lumen/W) and cost down (Haitz s law) More than illumination Add more functionality to increase value Going Green Energy efficiency & sustainability as societal themes Daylight Harvesting Using as much daylight as possible Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 3
More Illumination & More than Illumination In analogy to More Moore and more than Moore Lumen/W Efficiency More Illumination: Efficiency time Cost reduction Miniaturization Retrofit Form & fixture revolution Interacting with other systems, people and environment Non-illumination function System-in-package (SiP) More than Illumination: Function Enrichment $/lumen Source: Guo Qi Zhang, Philips Lighting Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 4
Trends in Lighting Lighting going digital Move towards a SSL Semiconductor-like value chain Liberation of Light New form factors, novel applications, user centered and ambient More illumination Drive for efficiency up (Lumen/W) and cost down (Haitz s law) More than illumination Add more functionality to increase value Going Green Energy efficiency & sustainability as societal themes Daylight Harvesting Using as much daylight as possible Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 5
Paradigm shift in illumination Paradigm shift in illumination driven by disruptive technology developments in solid-state lighting (SSL). First stage (today) is about cost effective retrofit LED lamps. Enlight focuses on the next generation Intelligent LED systems leveraging the intrinsic qualities of solid-state lighting technology. Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 6
EnLight Objectives Paradigm Shift in Illumination Today After tomorrow 4. Control On/off/dim -> Sensors and Apps GLS shape 3. Luminaire LED-module LED Retrofit 2. Lamp New form factor 1. Light generation Glowing wire Solid state lighting Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 7
Rationale (1/2) Traditional lamp holders are optimal for operation of GLS also in narrow fixtures Traditional lamp holders are non-optimal for SSL, poor thermal lamp-holder/bulb interface compromises the LED performance (lumen/w, lifetime) Traditional bulb form factors limit system performance (e.g. optical efficiency) and control feature integration CFL or LED retrofit SSL technology enables new design freedom for emerging new and ambient applications of light Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 8
Rationale (2/2) Intelligence is needed for future light modules, to enable large SSL system optimization, and to achieve higher performance vs. cost ratio. Future SSL modules must be green and energy efficient. Energy efficiency is a major societal issue. All these should based on a modular approach to maximize the potential and evolution of SSL technology and to allow freedom of choice in the value chain. Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 9
Aim To exploit the full potential of solid-state lighting through breakthrough innovations on: non-conventional, energy efficient, intelligent lighting systems, beyond LED retrofit applications, with the aim of 40% energy reduction compared to LED retrofit systems. 31 Intelligent luminaire Modular approach with standard interfaces to decouple lifecycles of independent technologies. Enables market players to contribute, differentiate and compete. Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 31
Decentralised intelligence architecture Architectural design pattern: No central node & no global knowledge of network topology is required All decision processes take place locally at each intelligent luminaire and no global knowledge of the network is required a priori Intelligent Luminaire is cornerstone building block: Autonomously controls brightness, color and beam shape Reacts to events instead of directly being controlled All nodes in network can raise events Intelligence by Configuration : Rules based behavior, configured during commissioning phase. Flexible: ability to adapt behavior according to latest insights. Self learning: ability to adapt behavior as result of global data mining. Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 32
Why decentralised architecture Robustness: No single point of failure but graceful degradation when node fails Scalability: Investments, complexity and intelligence grow linear with number of nodes Low entry level Combines smoothly with today s systems (i.e. non-intelligent luminaires) Modularity and extensibility: Nodes can be added, changed and programmed in modular fashion Enables luminaire differentation in functionality and performance Feature up during luminaire lifetime. Effectiveness and reduced complexity: Less complex commissioning when using local embedded sensors Localized presence detectors increase overall energy efficiency compared to centrally placed external sensors. Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 33
Architectural design choices Intelligent luminaire power architecture Central supply unit: Galvanic isolation required only once PF, EMI, harmonics addressed once High power supply should be < 60V and switchable (to reduce standby power) Split High and Low power supply: High power for power demanding devices (LLEs, some sensors). Voltage level impacts ohmic losses, ECG architectures Low power for communication bus, sensors. Smart Lighting 2012 conference Dusseldorf Frank van Tuijl Consortium Public 1 Feb 2012 Slide 34
