Energy Yield: Implementing a comprehensive performance optimization program at E.ON Petros Paterakis, Fleet Performance Analyst E.ON Climate & Renewables EWEA Workshop on Analysis of operating Wind Farms Increase Power Output, December 2014
Portland Achievements Summary EC&R currently operates a portfolio of more than 4.8 GW renewables capacity across Europe and North America San Francisco Chicago 2,731 North America Austin 57% 43% 303 Key facts Assets with 4,812 MW total capacity Europe Coventry Essen Be Malmö Hamburg Szczecin Lublin Be Headquarter Office location Capacity (MW) Onshore wind Offshore wind Other 12.3 TWh electricity produced in 2012, equivalent to demand of 3m homes 1 Global #8 in onshore wind Global #3 in offshore wind Milan 374 Active in 11 countries 865 employees, 34 nationalities Madrid 2 1 Production equivalent based on average annual consumption of 4,000 kwh per home Note Figures as of 31 Dec 2012 unless stated otherwise; rounded Includes 63 MW PV capacity in operation in France, Italy and the US Includes 50 MW CSP capacity in operation in Spain
Contents 1. What is Energy Yield? 2. Energy Yield Process 3. US Case Study 4. UK Offshore Case Study 5. Availability improvement 6. Upgrades 7. EC&R s Results with Energy Yield 8. What is next 3
1. What is Energy Yield? Energy Yield increases Turbine Performance through three Primary Levers Mission: Through Energy Yield, EC&R will achieve top-quartile Availability and Efficiency Performance; increasing EBITDA for operating assets and lowering the LCOE for wind power Efficiency Availability Further Levers standard with upgrade Availability targets 2010 time 2011 time 2012 energetic Identify performance deficits through Pre- Inspection Analysis reports; support the correction of these issues; quantify the production improvement benefits Improve reliability by identifying recurring issues in Pre-Inspection Analysis reports; Control Room and site teams rapidly respond to faults aided by self-developed tools Identify and implement performance enhancing solutions offered by turbine OEMs and third-parties 4
EC&R initiated three phase approach for selected sites 2. Energy Yield Process 1. Analyse 2. Execute 3. Review Before change After change In cooperation with EC&R region key areas for improvement are identified and shortlist for WTGs for site inspection is established Custom built, in house, software developed and learning reinvested to enhance analysis capabilities 5 Based on analysis results turbine inspection is performed Experienced in-house competence is utilized for inspections in team with site technicians Findings are if possible corrected at site or taken away for further review by project managers Corrections are reviewed through analysis of before and after performance Revenue increase is accredited to individual region Knowledge is transferred among regions
3. US Case Study US Performance Improvement Example Location: Texas, 99.8MW Site Before Change: The power curve was curtailed at 1550kW and output never exceeded this level meaning that the turbine was always producing at a minimum of 265kW from rated power (15% reduction). No alarm was triggered and no curtailments were active. The power curve scatter grouped by month prior to the change Steps: RCA held by Fleet Analysis EC&R was able to identify these curtailments and push the OEM to identify and remove the Root Cause Change: Rotor hung incorrectly following calibration of blade load cells. Rotor re-hung correctly. EC&R was able to build a Curtailment Alarm to alert on-site staff to Curtailments on other turbines in real time something the OEM claimed they couldn t do 6
UK Offshore Performance Improvement Example 4. UK Offshore Case Study Location: UK Offshore, 90 MW Site Before Change: The power curve was shifted the ramp had a changing slope. Fleet Analysis team suggested an inspection on the pitching system and then on anemometry Steps: Inspection results and changes: Pitch alignment was varying up to 20mm from TC (Tube Cut).TC mark end stop had big differences between blades. Windsensors replaced and aligned. Were found to over predict wind by 10%. Yaw datum was misaligned by 10 Improvement: 2.16% improvement in production as a result of the changes 7
Low Temperature operations improvements 5. Availability improvement Details of Change Gearbox sump temperature is dropping close to the ambient temperature during winter while turbine is non operational: Oil temperature drops from operational 65 C to 5 C in 36 hours Manual heating from site engineers required to bring the oil in operational temperature Downtime due to low gearbox oil temperature is costing to the wind farm 82,800 p.a Increased wear of gearbox due to higher oil viscosity Recommendation for heater installation on oil sumps 8
6. Upgrades Upgrades across E.ON fleet Most OEMs are offering Upgrade solutions for their models E.ON is testing and applying different upgrade solutions to its fleet Upgrades offered by manufacturers include: Software updates or packages (improve the operation of the controllers) Increase in power output Increase the operational envelope of the turbines Aerodynamic upgrades on blades (Vortex Generators, Tapes) Production increase can vary from 0.5% to 4%, but in general it is difficult to quantify 9
Results and Findings with Energy Yield to date 7. EC&R s Results with Energy Yield Good improvement opportunities available; however, close monitoring and deep investigation are required OEM knowledge is crucial, especially when controller settings require adjustment Cooperation of OEMs varies, often little incentive available for them to actively monitor inefficiencies OEM consideration for installed base is increasing and Upgrades are becoming increasingly available, but experience of actual effect is limited OEM s need to be challenged and engaged through Data Analysis to drive behavioural changes and improve Performance focus for Operational sites 10
8. What is next Next day for the E.ON Energy Yield program Improvement of existing in-house tools Roll out of new tools aiming to decrease short term downtime (DNT Downtime Notification Tool) Know-how exchange by integrating teams of different technologies (Hydro and Fossil) into a new one Keep in close touch with industry developments and new products 11
