3 Spoken English: Activities Quiz Competition Engage students by always keeping quizzes between the rows, dividing them into teams and then try to teach them a concept via fill the blanks and stuff. (shared by volunteer Gaurav) Think in English The goal here is to help students think quickly in English. Divide them into 2 groups, and they stand in a line. Ask a simple question, and the person who answers first gets to sit and the other one goes at the back of the line. The team which sits first wins. Questions can vary on the basis of the English level of the students. (shared by volunteer Gaurav) Dumb Charades For verbs, encourage the students to play dumb charades with the verb and guessing in English. (shared by volunteer Gaurav) Name, Place, Animal, Thing Ask the students to pick a letter and write down Name, place, animal, thing starting with that alphabet. Then, ask a student to build a sentence using one or more of the words. (shared by volunteer Chandan) Word Building - 1 Word building... I am sure all of us would have played this, but here I made them build words only out of a particular part of speech, ex: verbs (shared by volunteer Chandan) Word Building - 2 Give a long word to the students like Constantinople. Ask the students to make words using the letters in the long word. (shared by volunteer Chandan) Word Building - 3 The volunteer will write on the board random alphabets and ask the children to come up with as many words as possible in a given amount of time. 4 Be the teacher Spoken English: Activities Ask a student to come to the front and engage the class either in word building or sentence formation. This increases the student s confidence. (shared by volunteer Chandan) Passing the Parcel Game Have the students sit around. As one student is clapping, they pass the parcel (this can be a pen/pencil/book, etc) and when the student stops clapping, the person with the parcel has to answer a particular question or perform said activity. Kannada Expert Use translation of English into Kannada to build comprehension of English. When you read out a story or a student narrates a story of his own, have another student or group of students translate in Kannada. Role Play For a given situation/setting, ask 2-3 students to come to the front and act it out. For example, at the bus stand, one student can be a passenger, one student can be a driver and they can have a short conversation. One Word Expert The goal here is to help children build vocabulary. Student 1 thinks of a word in her mind. She has to give clues to another student with just 1 word. Student 2 can guess using only 1 word. This goes on till Student 2 says the right word. For example: Student 1 has chosen the word Umbrella Student 1 Student 2 Student 1 Student 2 Student 1 Student 2 says rain says flood says protection says raincoat says another guesses umbrella This basically will let the student to think in one direction and guess using as many English words as possible. 5 Spoken English: Activities Form a Sentence by seeing the pictures Place a few pictures on board which forms a meaningful and simple sentence and ask students to form a sentence (shared by volunteer Santhosh) Hangman Tell a sentence. And ask students to find one word for the sentence. Play hangman with the students Let the student guess the word by the hint of the given sentence. (shared by volunteer Santhosh) Scrabble A to Z of alphabets with each alphabet having points(rank, stars etc.,) Like A, C, E, G = 1 or (1 Star) B, D=2 or (2 Star), F, H =4 or (4 Star) etc., Divide the students into group of 5 8 Give them set of alphabets and ask them to make a word out of it. Whichever group makes a alphabet with highest number of points will score (shared by volunteer Santhosh) Odd one out For ex- Mother, Sister, Friend, Brother Boy, Female, Women, Girl (shared by volunteer Santhosh) 5

6 Create a Story Spoken English: Activities Give the students a situation or a location like Railway Station or Wedding. Divide the class into groups and ask them to come up with a short story in that setting in 10 sentences. It will be great for their creative, learning and speaking skills. (shared by volunteer Anuj) Picture Story Children can be given photocopies of any RANDOM picture and, then, be asked to describe it in their own words. It will be good for their describing and listening skills. (shared by volunteer Anuj) I Like, I don t Like! Asking the children to give their opinion about anything from their lives such as an icecream, a fair, food, their school,teacher etc. The object should be something all the kids in the class could relate to so that they can give their opinion about it. Ask the student to share 2 sentences about what they like and 2 sentences about what they don t like. (shared by volunteer Anuj) Pass the Secret! In "Pass the secret game" children will sit in 4 different lines. The volunteer will whisper a "secret" to the first child in a column. The child will then pass on the secret to the next child in his/her column and so on till it reaches the end. The class will then discover how close to the original the "secret" is. (shared by volunteer Anuj) Spell the word! This can be done with the whole class or in two teams. The first player on team one is given a word to spell orally. The volunteer writes the letters on the board as they are spelled out loud. If correct, the team gets a point. If you do a class competition, line the students up and give them words one by one. When they make a mistake they must sit down. The last student standing is the winner. (shared by volunteer Anuj) 6
