3 The Gurumi Family Notes: Amigurumi means knitted stuffed toy in Japanese. Though they re typically crocheted, the Gurumi Family is totally knitted. Their clothing is knit as part of their body, so there s less finishing and more time for fun. Add your own embellishments, faces, and accessories - that s part of the fun of amigurumi! All four dolls - Sammy, Amy, Tammy the Cat and Hammy the Dog have the same basic body. Follow the same knitting directions for each body, and follow the color diagram specific to each doll. When changing colors, simply tie a good knot in the yarns and tuck the ends inside; they ll be hidden in the stuffing so there s no need to weave in ends. Circular CO Pinch the working yarn between the first and middle finger of your left hand. Wrap the yarn tail around the ring and pinky fingers of your left hand, holding the yarn tail firmly with your right hand. *Using your right hand, insert the point of your needle (you can use double points or a circular) under the yarn across your ring and pinky fingers (the first loop ) from front to back. Pass the needle over the working yarn and draw a loop out from under the first loop; this creates one cast-on stitch. YO.* Repeat from * until you have cast on the required number of stitches. Note: If you need an even number of stitches, you will need to cast on the final stitch as a standard yarn over when you begin your first round of knitting. Arrange the stitches on your double point needles, on either side of a long circular for Magic Loop, or on 2 circulars to begin knitting in the round. Tug on the yarn tail to draw the stitches into a tighter circle. Begin knitting! Vertical Double Decrease (VDD) Slip two stitches to the RH needle knit-wise. Knit the next stitch, then pass two slipped sts over; two sts removed. M1L (Make 1 Left-leaning stitch): PU the bar between st just worked and next st and place on needle as a regular stitch; knit through the back loop. M1R (Make 1 Right-leaning stitch): PU the bar between st just worked and next st and place on needle backwards (incorrect stitch mount). Knit through the front loop. DIRECTIONS Using Circular CO, CO 8 sts. Distribute sts over two circs, two sides of one circ, or 4 dpns. Knit one round. Next round: KFB into every st; 16 sts. Begin head decreases Round 1: Knit, decreasing 8 sts evenly around. Round 2-3: Knit. Round 4: Work as round 1, staggering the decreases so that they do not line up. Round 5: Knit. Rounds 6-9: repeat rounds 4-5 twice. Begin to stuff head. Rounds 10-11: Repeat round 4 twice. Round 12: K2 tog around. Break yarn leaving a 6 tail. Using a yarn needle, pass the yarn tail through all live stitches. Using the eraser end of a pencil or other small, blunt tool, finish stuffing the head. Pull yarn tail tight, and weave in ends. Person Limbs All four limbs are constructed the same way, though the colors may be different. Follow the color diagram for each doll. Using Circular CO, CO 8 sts. 5 Begin decreases: Row 1: K to last 3 sts, SSK, K1. Row 2: Purl. Repeat these two rows until 10 sts remain. Next row: K1, K2tog, K to 3 sts before end, SSK, K1. Next row: Purl. Repeat these two rows twice more: 6 sts remain. BO all sts. Hold the inside and outside portions together with right sides facing. Using the long cast on tail from the outside, sew the two sides together along the outer edge. When that is done, use the remaining tail to sew the ear to the dog s head, following placement diagram. The cast-on edge will be sewn down, with the inside of the ear facing forward. Right ear For Inside: using Willow, follow instructions for outside Left ear. For Outside: using Fedora, follow instructions for inside Left ear. Sew sides together and sew to body as given for Left ear, following placement diagram. Round 11: *K9, M1; repeat around. There should be 80 sts. Purl one round. Next round: *K2tog, YO; repeat around. Purl one round. Work ruffle: Round 1: KFB into every st. Rounds 2-3: Knit. BO all sts. Optional Pet Collars Collars for Tammy and Hammy are fun and simple additions. Find a charm or a small jingle bell. Using the yarn color of your choice, you can work a 3-st i-cord long enough to encircle the pet s neck, using the yarn tail to graft the two ends together. Sew the bell to the collar. For a simpler approach, simply slide the bell over a strand of yarn and tie it in a bow behind the pet s neck. Cat Ears (Make 2) Outside With White, CO 3 sts and K 1 row. Row 2 (WS): Purl. Row 3: K1, M1L, K1, M1R, K1. Row 4: Purl. Row 5: K1, M1L, K3, M1R, K1. Row 6: Purl. Continue in this manner, increasing one st after first and before last st of every RS row, until there are 15 sts on the needle. Break yarn leaving a 12 tail and place on holder. Inside With Blush, work as for Outside, working until there are 13 sts on the needle. BO all sts. Break yarn leaving a 12 tail. Hold Inside and Outside ears together with Right Sides facing each other. Using the tail from the Inside, carefully sew both sides together, going up towards the apex of the ear and then back down. Weave in the end. Turn right side out. Using the tail from the outside of the ear and following diagram, stitch all live sts down to the head of the Cat, sewing the bound-off edge of the Inside part down as well. AMY S SKIRT Amy s skirt is knit on. Hold the doll upside down and choose a round about halfway between the decreases and increases of her body. With Serrano, and starting under one of her arms, PU and knit 48 sts; join in the round. Round 1: *K6, M1; repeat around. Rounds 2-3: knit. Round 4: *K7, M1; repeat around. Rounds 5-6: Knit. Round 7: *K8, M1; repeat around. Rounds 9-10: Knit. 5 The Gurumi Family

Attach tail in the center back after the last increase round. Some Ideas for Faces What makes an Amigurumi face so cute is the placement and simplicity of features. Eyes should be set wide apart from each other and at least halfway down the head. Noses are usually only seen on animals, and the mouth should be small and only slightly lower than the eyes. For rosy cheeks and noses, apply a tiny bit of blush to the end of a cotton swab and lightly rub it over the area you d like to color. Apply sparingly - a little goes a long way! 6 The Gurumi Family

7 ADDING FEATURES TO YOUR DOLLS Step 3 Pass the needle and thread through the shank on the eye. If using regular buttons, pass the needle through one hole and out the opposite. Do not pull on the thread tightly. Step 4 Pass the thread back through the fabric under the eye and right back out. Tie a knot around the thread itself, being sure that the eye is snug to the fabric. Begin Gather your supplies. You will need embroidery thread or fine yarn, sew-on eyes such as shank buttons*, and an embroidery needle. *Embroider the eyes if these dolls will be given to very young children. Step 1 Choose the placement for your eyes. Typically for amigurumi, the eyes are spaced far apart and about halfway down the head. Step 5 Sew through the eye shank and back through the fabric a few more times. Pass the thread under the fabric and out where you wish to place the second eye. Step 2 Thread the needle with about a yard of thread. Pass the needle through the back of the head towards the eye, leaving a small tail out the back. Holding the eye in place, pull the needle through the front just under the eye. Step 6 Knot and pass through the eye shank several times, as done for the first eye. Make one final knot around the thread at the base of the eye, and pass the thread back through to the back of the head. Step 7 Snip off the thread ends very close to the fabric. Squeeze the doll so that the thread ends pull in. 7 The Gurumi Family

8 NOSE AND MOUTH This sewing method works for any of the small details you ll want to sew onto your dolls: mouths, noses, eyebrows, eyelashes and more. Satin stitch can be used to create features like spots, paw pads, and clothing details; see the Embroidered Hair section for more information about satin stitch! Step 1 Create an outline for the nose. Pass the needle and thread through the knit fabric so that the thread ends come out on opposite sides of where the nose will be. Pull the thread so that the portion under the fabric is the center - you ll use both thread ends to create the mouth. Step 4 Pass the needle through the beginning of the previous stitch, then out at the end of where you want to place the next stitch. Repeat this motion to fill in the mouth details. Use one thread end for one side, and the other thread end for the other side of the mouth. Step 2 Hold the thread ends crossed so that they intersect at the bottom point of the nose. Pass the needle with one thread end through that point, and out again right next to the original stitch s entry point. Fill in the nose using satin stitch, each time moving the new stitch a little farther over than the previous. Step 3 When the nose is filled in, begin backstitching the mouth. pass the needle through the bottom point of the nose, and then out where you want the next stitch to begin. The next stitch you make will fill in the previous stitch. You may find it helpful to mark along the mouth with a disappearing ink fabric pen to keep your place. Step 5 At the corners of the mouth, tie an overhand knot close to the fabric surface. Make your last stitch by passing the needle through the end of the previous stitch and back out just under the knot; tie yarn end again around the previous knot. Pass the thread through the head and out the back as done for the eyes. Step 6 Trim both thread ends, and squeeze the head so that the ends pull into the fabric. 8 The Gurumi Family

9 HAIR The dolls hair can really add some personality! There are a few ways to make hair; embroidery and basic sewn through styles are shown here. If the dolls will be given to very small children, the embroidered hair is the safest, as it is not easily pulled out. EMBROIDERED HAIR Step 1 To embroider hair, you will essentially be working in very long sections of satin stitch. The embroidered hair should match the color of the crown! First, use a disappearing-ink fabric marker, chalk, or pins to mark out a part and the hairline. Step 2 Cut several long lengths of yarn. Using a yarn needle, run the yarn up through the body and pull the needle out through the area where you will begin your first stitch. Run the needle through a stitch at the end of the hairline. Pull the needle out at the part, immediately next to the first stitch. Do not pull tightly, as it will deform the head shape. Step 3 Run stitches directly next to each other in this manner all around the head, following the hairline and starting a new piece of yarn when necessary. Around the back, to avoid the yarn overlapping, work the satin stitch in short wedges to fill in the space. When the hair is all done, bury the end in the body. If you wish, place a small dab of fabric glue under the first and last stitches of each strand to tack them down. SEWN HAIR Step 1 Draw in a part and a hairline as in the Embroidered Hair. Thread a needle with yarn, still connected to the ball, and pass it under one leg of a stitch along the part. Pull the yarn through, and trim off the yarn at whatever length you wish. Leaving it longer will let you style it! Step 2 Continue threading in one strand after another, following the part and around the hairline. This will leave the center bald, but once you tie her hair up you won t notice! Step 3 For an unstyled hairdo, you can follow just the two sides of the part, and leave the hair long. The hair is very easy to pull out like this, so you may want to use fabric glue to adhere the yarn right along the part. For a single ponytail, just follow the hairline and don t worry about the part at all! Step 4 Pull the hair back on either side and smooth it into pigtails. Using yarn or hair elastics, tie around the pigtails very tightly. If this is for a small child, use fabric glue to hold the tie down - that way the hair can t be pulled out! Step 5 Trim the ends of the pigtails as short or long as you like. 9 The Gurumi Family
