1 Cancer Ribbon Filet Afghan derivative 2006, 2012 by Sandra Petit, adapted from Cancer Awareness Afghan design by Cheri Jackson, Mary Maxim (with permission). Shared for personal/charity use only Materials: for 20 sq afghan joined with whipstitch you will need at least 54 ozs. Worsted weight acrylic yarn, H or I hook (whatever is suitable for your yarn) Afghan pictured used the discontinued Mary Maxim Best Value worsted weight acrylic pink yarn (color #736614). Possible substitutes include Caron Natura Pink, Red Heart Soft pink, Simply Soft Soft Pink, Bernat Satin Flamingo (a little darker /redder) or any pink you like. I generally figure 2 1/2 filet squares or 2 solid squares for 5 ozs. worsted weight yarn. (Don t forget to account for assembly and edging) In the Caron Natura, I used an I hook. I left a long tail 3x the width of the square for assembly. It took about 24 ozs. for a 9 square ghan. Size: ea sq depending on yarn used Common pattern abbreviations: beg = beginning ch = chain dc = double crochet ea = each hk = hook sc = single crochet sk = skip sp = space sl st = slip stitch wk = work How to use Chart on page 5: chart uses 3 dc mesh filet crochet. Each solid square is 3 dc, each open mesh is (dc, ch 1, dc). Design is symmetrical so you don t have to worry about reading right to left or left to right. If you want a larger or smaller finished square, multiply number of boxes by 2 and add 3 for your foundation chain. 1

2 Special Stitches Invisible Finish Off Cut yarn, leaving at least a 6 strand and pull through last stitch. Thread strand through a large eye needle. Insert needle under top 2 strands of stitch to left of beginning ch-2. Pull yarn through. Entering from front, insert needle into the middle (back loop) of the LAST stitch completed. Pull through to back and weave ends in on the wrong side as normal. Note: You may use ch-2 or ch-3 for your turning chains. I used ch-2. Ribbon Square - make 10 for a 20 square afghan, 6 for a 12 square afghan, 5 for a 9 square afghan OR you can make your afghan with all ribbon squares. Your choice. Ch 43 (Note: If you tend to make a tight foundation chain, you might use a hook one size larger for the foundation chain.) Row 1: dc in 4 th chain from hook and across (41dc) Every row will have 41 stitches, counting dc and chains. Row 2: ch 2 or ch 3 to bring up to height (for this and all future rows), dc in each dc Row 3: ch 2, turn, dc in ea of next 8 dc, (for a total of 9 if you re counting your stitches) ch 1, sk 1, dc in ea of next 21 dc, ch 1, sk 1, dc in ea of next 9 dc Note: The tricky thing in working the following rows is the dc count. There is a dc included in the repeat, so that is not counted in the next instruction. I kept it this way because the repeat (like 3X) will tell you how many holes you need to have on that row. If you ve repeated 3 times then you will have 3 holes. Join with a slip stitch to beg ch or join using invisible finish off. Plain Square (make 10 for a 20 square ghan, 6 for a 12 square, 4 for a 9 square): Ch 43 Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hk and in ea ch across Row 2: ch 2, turn, dc across. 3

4 Rows 3 23: repeat row 2, do not finish off. Follow instructions for Square Edging on Ribbon Square. Afghan Assembly Instructions Make 10 ribbon squares and 10 plain squares. Place 4 squares across and 5 squares down, alternating ribbon and plain squares. Whipstitch squares together into rows and columns, being careful that the squares line up correctly. You may choose a different assembly method if yu wish. Note that if you use a method other than whipstitch you will need more yarn. You may also choose to add an edging to each row or column. Note this will also take more yarn. Afghan Faux Picot Edging: Join yarn with a sc in any corner st on right side, (ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc) in same st. sk 1 st, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sk 1 st) around afghan. In corners, wk (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 2, sc). Join as before to first st. Extra Note: When working an edging, you need more stitches in the corners. I used 3 sc in the pattern, but you can choose a different option if you wish. Here are some that I use on occasion. hdc = half double crochet tr = triple crochet Corner Options: 1) 3 stitches in each corner - This is the option many patterns choose. 2) (sc, ch 2, sc) - add chains between stitches. This is a nice picot look for borders as well. 3) (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) - more square corner 4) (2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc) - more square corner 5) (sc, hdc, sc) or (dc, tr, dc) - use a longer stitch as the corner stitch 6) (sc, ch 1, sc, ch 1, sc) 7) (sc, ch 1, sc) 4
