1 Ranco Socks Cesto de Flores by Aurelie Colas These socks are constructed toe-up with a short-row heel. Compared to other garments, socks are knitted at a tight gauge to increase comfort and durability. The design features a choice of toe-box (wider or more pointed) to accommodate for different toe shapes. Measurements All sock measurements are taken with fabric un-stretched and sock off the foot. Sock to fit comfortably a size medium. To achieve smaller or larger circumference, adjust needle size accordingly. For a good fit, it is recommended that the sock (un-stretched) measure about 2.5cm (1in) less than the foot both in length and circumference. Sock circumference measured across foot: 20cm (8in) Sock circumference measured across leg: 19cm (7.5in) (more stretchy pattern) Length of leg measured from top of heel: 23cm (9in) Foot length is adjustable. Yarn requirements 100 gms Ranco Multi Sh 943 Notions Set of 2.5mm (US 1.5) double pointed needles or circular needles (1 x 80+cm if using magic loop, or 2 x 40+cm if using two-circular method) or size required to obtain gauge. Cable needle Stitch markers Tension 32 sts and 44 rows to 10cm measured over stocking stitch. Notes: Unless specified otherwise, all slipped stitches are slipped purl-wise. Stitches may need to be re-arranged a few times on the needles, as the beginning of the round changes position twice, and some SSK/K2tog stitches travel across the sock. When working the mock argyle pattern, make sure to spread out the slipped stitches on the right needle so the strand of yarn being carried in front can lie loosely across them. The little flowers on the instep and around the leg of the sock are made in three parts, referred to as the stem, the leaf and the bud. The stem is

2 represented by a column of Ktbl stitches; the leaves by long loop of yarn (see MFL and MRL abbreviations); the bud is created by increasing several times into a stitch then decreasing over the following rounds. When making the leaves of the little flowers, pull the yarn very loosely. The leaf should lie slack over the un-stretched fabric, only appearing flat when the fabric is slightly stretched. (Tip: When knitting the following round, the tension over the leaf can be adjusted by pulling gently on the strands of the leaf at the back and front of work to even it out. If holes show at the extremities of leaves, they have been worked too tightly and require adjusting.) Information on special techniques such as toe-up cast-on methods (like Judy s Magic Cast-on) or very stretchy bind-off methods (like Jeny s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-off) can be found readily on the Internet or in knitting handbooks. 5 From this point, only the sole stitches will be worked to turn the heel. Heel Heel will be worked back and forth using short-rows over the 32 stitches of the sole. Short-row 1: K 31, w&t. Short-row 2: sl1, P29, w&t Short-row 3: sl1, K28, w&t Short-row 4: sl1, P27, w&t In the same manner as Short-rows 3 and 4, continue working the heel flap working one less stitch each time, until 11 stitches are wrapped on each side, and 10 stitches remain unwrapped. The last short-row worked is sl1, P9, w&t With right side facing, continue as follows, working the wraps with the stitch they wrap as you go: Short-row 1: sl1, K9, K1ww, w&t. (Note: This stitch will now have 2 wraps. When it is time to work that stitch, pick up both wraps and work them together with the stitch they wrapped). Short-row 2: sl1, P10, P1ww, w&t Short-row 3: sl1, K11, K1ww, w&t Short-row 4: sl1, P12, P1ww, w&t Continue this way until you knit across all stitches and work the last doublewrapped stitch while knitting the RS: the last short-row worked reads: sl1, K29, K1ww. Turn work (without wrapping, as the wrapping on this side is complete). Sl1, P30, P1ww. Turn work (without wrapping). Sl1, K31. This completes the heel shaping. From this point, resume knitting in the round. Leg: To avoid the apparition of holes at the corner of the heel, a stitch will be picked up after slipping marker that marks the beginning of the round and another one before slipping the second marker. These extra stitches will be knitted together with their neighbour on the following round. Round 1: Pick-up 1 st, K1, P2, (Ktbl, P5) 3 times, Ktbl, P1, MRL, P3, Ktbl, P2, MLL, P1, K1, Pick-up 1 st, SM, (K1, Sl3wyif) 4 times, M1, (Sl3wyif, K1) 4 times, SM (68 sts) Round 2: K2tog, P2, (Ktbl, P5) 4 times, Ktbl, P4, SSK, SM, K until marker. RM, sl1, PM. This becomes the new start of round. (66 sts) Round 3: Pfb, P1, (Ktbl, P5) 4 times, M7from1, P3, Pfb, PM, SSK (removing marker between the 2 stitches being worked together), (K1, KSSwns, K2) 7 times, K1, KSSwns, K1, K2tog, SM Round 4: P3, (Ktbl, P5) 4 times, K7, P5, SM, K until end of round, SM Round 5: Pfb, P2, Ktbl, P3, (P5, Ktbl) 3 times, P2, SSK, CDD, K2tog, P2, Ktbl, P1, Pfb, SM, SSK, (K1, Sl3wyif) 7 times, K1, K2tog, RM Round 6: Sl1, PM (this becomes the new start of round), P3, Ktbl, P3, (P5, Ktbl) 3 times, P2, CDD, P2, Ktbl, P2, PM, P1, RM, K until last st before M, P1, SM From this point in pattern, the end-of-round marker will remain static. For this reason, the last SM instruction for each round will not be explicitly written.
