Our close collaboration with industry means we offer relevant, practical teaching that is firmly based on our transformational research. Our passion for the areas we operate in and our long-standing relationships with some of the most prestigious bodies in the military, law enforcement and security services mean that studying at Cranfield could open doors for you. 4,600+ learners UK No.1 Engineering and technology postgraduates A professional network of 60,000+ alumni 81% of our research is world-leading or internationally excellent. Studying Forensic Science at Cranfield The Forensic MSc programme offers a wide range of modules allowing students to graduate with one of six tailored MSc courses that will closely match their desired area of professional expertise. These are: Digital Forensics, Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology, Forensic Ballistics, Forensic Engineering and Science, Forensic Explosive and Explosion Investigation and Forensic Investigation. All of our courses are highly practical and hands-on, aiming to produce forensic experts capable of giving expert witness testimonies in a courtroom situation and elsewhere. Cranfield Forensic Institute is based at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom at Shrivenham, Oxfordshire. The Ministry of Defence facility is a secure site, which means students have access to unrivalled facilities, such as ballistic and explosives ranges.

3 Reasons to study Forensic Science with us 1 Cranfield Forensic Institute (CFI) CFI is the renowned home for the many forensic-related disciplines at Cranfield University, such as ballistics, explosives, materials science, engineering failures and digital forensics. With the addition of forensic archaeology and anthropology, we are the only university in the world to accommodate these disciplines within a science and technology faculty. 4 Scene Investigations. Further details can be found at Research project Students carry out an original research project in academia or the wider forensic sector, allowing them to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired. Project ideas come from academic staff, from the student themselves or partners such as police forces, military organisations and security firms. 2 3 Facilities and teaching We have excellent facilities for studying and research. Our strong links with industry attract substantial sponsorship from the public and private sectors. Students have access to the CFI forensic laboratory, as well as other University science and engineering laboratories. Students benefit from the expertise of academics who are practitioners in the field, as well as visiting experts. Course accreditation The majority of our MSc courses have been formally accredited by the internationally renowned Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, under the Component Standards; Interpretation, Evaluation and Presentation of Evidence, Laboratory Analysis and Crime 5 6 Part-time or full-time studies The MSc programme is available on a part-time or full-time basis. Part-time students are often in full-time employment and take up to three years to complete the course. There is plenty of flexibility and we recognise that many students will need to balance their studies with their career. The course is modular and students can select modules throughout the academic year to fit in with other commitments. Full-time students complete the course in one year. Broad portfolio CFI offers a wide range of other study options research degrees, taught degrees and short courses. Read more on our website. I really enjoy being at Cranfield University at Shrivenham. I think it s a fantastic environment to study in and you can do a lot of other things as well while you re here. The 2016 Vice Chancellor s prize is fantastic, it means a lot to me professionally, it s great to know that I ve been recognised for my achievements and it will be good to include on my CV after my PhD. Emma Saunders, current student Forensic Anthropology PhD, Vice- Chancellor s Prize 2016, Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology MSc, 2016

4 Forensic courses The Forensic MSc programme is run by Cranfield Forensic Institute (CFI) which is based within Cranfield Defence and Security at our Shrivenham Campus in Oxfordshire. CFI is a leading centre of excellence for the application of science and technology to law enforcement and is internationally-renowned as one of the leading forensic science research and postgraduate teaching facilities in the world. We specialise in applying the latest cutting-edge forensic techniques to service niche areas that include research and development, education, security technology, ballistics, engineering, archaeology, anthropology and computing. Career prospects The Forensic MSc programme opens doors to several different career opportunities. These include employment routes into government and non-governmental bodies, police forces, law enforcement agencies, independent forensic service providers, and consultants working in a range of sectors, such as insurance companies. It is also an excellent introduction to research at PhD level in the subject. The Cranfield Forensic Institute is a world-class facility, providing a significant boost to graduates market value and employability. Accreditations Five of the six MScs offered by Cranfield Forensic Institute are accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, including commendations for many of the components we offer. The Digital Forensics MSc holds full accreditation from the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). Short courses Before embarking on an MSc programme, many students choose to attend one of the short courses or workshops organised by the Cranfield Forensic Institute. The majority of Forensic MSc programme modules are offered as individual short courses and they are an excellent introduction to our offering, especially for those with an unconventional background, such the military or law enforcement. If you have completed one of the course modules as an accredited short course before embarking on the Forensics MSc programme, you will be credited for this, and your short course fee will normally be refunded from your MSc course fees.

5 Courses Digital Forensics MSc, PgDip, PgCert Digital forensics is a dynamic area of criminal investigation, with new tools, techniques and methods constantly available to both the investigator and the investigated. This course offers a carefully blended mix of fundamental principles and advanced techniques, focusing on providing the knowledge and skills required to conduct comprehensive forensic examinations of digital devices. Students have access to three dedicated computer laboratories which include the latest versions of popular commercial software as used by professional forensic analysts. Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology MSc, PgDip This course provides students with an understanding of how traditional and advanced techniques from archaeological science and physical anthropology can be applied in the forensic context. It explains how the excavation of buried remains, the analysis of human remains and trauma identification can be used in civil, criminal and human rights investigations. Students have access to our purpose-built outdoor taphonomy research laboratories - one of only two in the country. The facility has been specifically designed to enable research into animal decomposition, taphonomy, search and location and excavation of buried remains. Forensic Ballistics MSc, PgDip This course explains how firearms and ammunition function, the science of ballistics, the role of the forensic firearms examiner and how the forensic evidence produced in gun crime can be used to help resolve issues in relation to criminal and civil law. Students will have practical experience in firearms handling and examination, and be introduced to the interpretation of UK firearms law, comparison microscopy and serial number restoration. The course provides students with a platform to utilise these skills in forensic science and other industrial and research-based applications. Forensic Engineering and Science MSc, PgDip Students gain an understanding of how the physical sciences can be applied to forensic problems. Specific emphasis is given to the understanding and analysis of material and component failures, as well as the investigation of fires. Excellent links with the civil, defence and manufacturing industries enable students to become familiar with a multitude of different applications. These include the ignition and spread of fires in both confined and unconfined situations and the material failure of components and structures due to corrosion, fatigue, shock, overload and wear. Forensic Explosive and Explosion Investigation MSc, PgDip This course introduces students to the investigation of explosive and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear crime scenes. It introduces cutting-edge investigative and analytical techniques such as forensic intelligence, exploitation and open-source intelligence. Students have access to Cranfield University and Ministry of Defence (MOD) test facilities, and draw on the experience of staff from The Impact and Armour Group - Cranfield s centre for impact mechanics and terminal ballistics - and the Centre for Defence Chemistry. Speakers and projects are drawn from DSTL, MOD, FERA, NIST, the Metropolitan Police and many other agencies. Forensic Investigation MSc, PgDip, PgCert The aim of this course is to provide an overview of specific areas of the application of science to forensic problems, and is intended to enable graduates to resolve issues in relation to civil and criminal law. It provides students with the widest choice of modules, drawn from all five courses described above. It is highly flexible, allowing students to tailor their MSc to their interests and gain an holistic view of the different fields of forensic science.
