8 About What causes hair loss? The gradual or more sudden loss of hair can be a very emotional experience for any man. The effects of hair loss can cause irritation, anxiety or even suicidal depression. This is compounded by feelings of helplessness if there is no solution available. Here we show the effects that the male hormone DHT has on hair follicles. A genetic time switch causes hair cells to become sensitive to DHT, resulting in the deterioration of the hair follicles internal structure causing shedding of hair and baldness. The reasons for Male Pattern Baldness (or MPB ) are attributed to the male hormone testosterone circulating in your body and also the genetic sensitivity to that hormone. In fact, DHT is a breakdown of the hormone testosterone Dihydrotestosterone that causes the hair cells to stop producing hair. The hair on the back and sides of the head, however, is immune to the effects of DHT. It is also usually thicker, stronger and more densely packed hair. When the hair from this area (known as the donor area) is removed to a balding or thinning area it retains its own genetic characteristics and will grow naturally, as it did in its original location, for life. 9 Hair loss 1 STAGE 1 - Male Pattern Baldness The first tell tale signs of the onset of Male Pattern Baldness is when frontal recessions begin to appear in the hairline. 2 STAGE 2 - Male Pattern Baldness Over time these recessions become larger and much more noticeable, and the hairline moves further back. STAGE 3 - Male Pattern Baldness 3 At the same time as the recessions taking place, a thinning area may also appear on the crown and will gradually increase in size. STAGE 4 - Male Pattern Baldness 4 The final stage of Male Pattern Baldness is when the hair is lost completely from the crown and frontal region, leaving the familiar horse shoe shape. 9

10 Hair Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation is the new state-of-the-art hair transplantation technique by which all other hair transplant procedures are measured. This is the very latest transplantation technique available today, and the result is a very natural appearance indeed. Most people believe that hair grows in single strands very close together like the teeth of a comb. In fact, it grows in small clusters, family groupings or bundles known as follicular units. Highly skilled medical assistants are assisted by the latest advances in hair transplantation transiluminated dissection backlighters as well as stereoscopic microscopes. In order to remove follicular units from the back of the scalp without damaging them, donor tissue is removed in one single piece (single strip harvest). The individual follicular units are then divided from the strip under stereoscopic microscopes to create the finest grafts, that when placed very close together in a random pattern mimics how they would naturally grow. The end result is a hair transplant that looks totally natural because it is created in the way that hair naturally grows. 10

12 Hair Transplant It has been said that hair transplantation is 80% artistry and 20% surgical skill. 13 The procedure only deals with the surface layers of the skin: the epidermis and dermis. The first two layers of the skin contain the hair follicles (roots). Every single hair follicle on the human head is genetically programmed either to become sensitive to the male hormone, causing it to die after a time, or to become permanently immune to the withering effects of the male hormone and last for a lifetime. These lifetime hairs are found in high density in nearly all men, even those who are severely bald. They are located in a horseshoe shaped region at the back of the head called the donor area. The principle of hair transplantation is to take the permanent hairs from the donor area and relocate them to the thinning or bald areas elsewhere on the scalp. The removal and transplanting of hair is a straightforward minor surgical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. It only takes a few hours but the complex part of hair transplantation is the artistry required by the hair transplant surgeon. Great skill is required to design and create a natural looking hairline zone that is correct for the shape of your face and your age, now and in the future. The following are taken into consideration; the correct texture of hair taken from the donor area and the density of grafts including graft size to maximise fullness and density. The final stage of the hair transplantation is the placing of the individual grafts in the correct pattern. We therefore offer the following non-surgical options for the treatment of hair loss: Medication we offer both Propecia and Dutasteride tablets for male hair loss. These have been shown to increase hair growth and prevent further hair loss in men. E.g. in recent clinical trials where hair loss was measured by the number of scalp hairs gained or lost, 83% of men taking Propecia showed no further hair loss after 2 years. In a further trial, 66% of men had an increase in hair growth.
