1 THE FALCON TIMES Falcon Cove Middle School 4251 Bonaventure Boulevard Weston, FL SUMMER STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE MAY 2016 Dear Falcon Cove Families: What an exciting year at Falcon Cove Middle! I want to take this opportunity to share with you some of the fantastic events, honors and projects that happened around the Cove. Our fabulous PTA took us through the year with event after event, beginning with our awesome Flight of the Falcons which started us off with a bang. They never lost their steam when it came to putting on wonderful dances and events for our students. Visit our campus to get the birds eye view of the many wonderful additions that were implemented by our PTA, our authentic tiki hut, beautiful brick pavers at the entrance, and many other renovations. Our calendar was full with band competitions, film festivals, drama shows, and dance recitals. Our student s brought us to the top in all categories, winning competition after competition. Our trophy cases are full!! We are excited to bring to you this summer, our new Innovative Learning Center, appropriately named, The Nest. The Nest is an integrated technology-rich space that will encourage independent and collaborative learning. Lastly, as a special recognition to those staff that are retiring, relocating, or changing levels - Thank you to each of you for your dedication and commitment to making our school one of the best in the State of Florida! 2 Cinco de Mayo Fun! Students in Ms. Jimenez class celebrated "El Cinco de Mayo" by discussing what is being celebrated in Mexico that day. After the discussion, students were asked to write a summary of what they have just learned. Afterwards, they all have fun having their pictures taken with their faces on an opening of a board, where they look like they are riding a burro while playing the guitar. Mrs. Jimenez passed pencils with a lot of adjectives written on them (in the masculine form for the boys and in the femenine forms for the girls) to each student as a gift. Fun was had by all!! Students in the 5th period class wrote the following: "During May 5, 1862, Mexico and France had a battle in Puebla (a small town near Mexico City). Mexico was already an independent country. Mexican Army, joined by farmers and townspeople, was hopelessly outnumbered, but they still managed to defeat the French Army and forced them to retreat. Today, it is celebrated with dancing, music and reenactments of the battle, especially in Puebla, Mexico. It is also celebrated in USA". Best Buddies Having Fun Best Buddies Club held their monthly event in April on Falcon Cove's campus playing 2 kickball games and parachute. 50 students who attended had lots of laughs and ate delicious cold ices after running around. Students were also able to christen the new"tiki Hut" to cool off!!!

3 6th Grade Social Studies Mrs. Tiernan and Mrs. Stanley s 6th grade Social Studies class concentrated the 4th quarter on a Holocaust Study Unit, in which every student choose a Holocaust child for an Adopt-a- Child assignment. Students discovered that their adoptive child had a sibling, they also chose a child that had their own last name to conduct research to see if possibly they could have been a relatived. The classes continued researching their chosen adoptive child to find out if they were still surviving. The research included pertinent facts for a biography. For example, an address showed up for one of the Holocaust children which resulted in correspondence between the elderly survivor who in turn sent the student his Holocaust story. Mrs. Stanley stated, that it was an extremely touching moment for all of us...to be touched by the past and to read the story My Lost Childhood. It was electrifying! Mrs. Stanley, went on to say I will always remember the excitement that my students exuded from the postcard he received from his Holocaust child, echoing, "Mrs. Stanley!!! Guess what? Alfred...my Holocaust child...he wrote back...i have the postcard he sent!!" heartstrings. A memory that will forever be tied to our Wall of Remembrance On the Wall of Remembrance there are many beautiful drawings remembering the Holocaust. These drawings are a special tribute for everyone who experienced the Holocaust. Mrs. Tiernan gave us this project after watching the Anne Frank movie so that students have a better understanding how bad it was for Jews. This wall is very special to us because it shows how we feel towards the Holocaust. The wall is put up every year by Mrs. Tiernan and every is just as special. This wall shows anyone that comes in the class how bad the holocaust was, but it also shows them how we should remember everyone who was in the Holocaust. On this wall we all agree that something similar to the Holocaust should never happen again. Written by Valerie Ortiz

4 HOLOCAUST CHILD BIOGRAPHY In my history class, each student was assigned a child that lived during the Holocaust. The person I was assigned to research was Hans Ament. I began researching Ament s family and found out that his brother, Alfred Ament, was still alive and living in New Lenox, Illinois. I searched the internet and found an address for Alfred and I sent Alfred a letter asking questions about Hans. Alfred sent me a postcard with his address and asked me to him and he would send me information about his life. I ed him and he sent me several s which contained pictures of Hans memorial, Hans and his house growing up, and information containing the railroad he used to escape the Nazi s. Alfred has sent me other s about the time period which talk about the life of other Holocaust prisoners and what they were forced to do such as work in the car manufacturing plants in Germany. He also sent me an article about an Auschwitz guard who was recently arrested for war crimes. Nolan with his letter Written by Nolan Nau Perfect Attendance Three students received Perfect Attendance awards and a night to honor them at Plantation High School. 5 Battle of the Books Falcon Cove Book Club hosted Sawgrass Springs Middle School on May 6 for the 2016 Broward County Middle School "BATTLE OF THE BOOKS" competition. Students from both schools read six Sunshine State Books and began discussing and studying them beginning in January. It was a close competition but Falcon Cove Book Club took home the trophy with a four point lead. Our students won with grace and enjoyed a luncheon with their competitors who are hoping to make a comeback next school year. Our Book Club battle team included Eniya Krishnaraj, Colin Crawford, Grace Gould, Anusha Bishayee, Camila Dotti, Felipe Posada, Deion Bright and Nathan Mendelson. Congratulations to all!
