Criminal Justice Students Donate Food To Law Enforcement The Corbin Area Technology Center Criminal Justice classes donated turkey boxes to local law enforcement as part of their class project entitled Operation Joy. The classes donated 15 boxes consisting of a turkey, stuffing, vegetables, and drinks. The boxes were donated to the Laurel, Knox, and Whitely County Sheriff Offices and the Corbin Police Department to be distributed to needy families. The class came up with the idea to help provide food for some of the less fortunate families in the area. The main purpose is to give back to the community especially during the Christmas Holiday season, Criminal Justice Teacher Tackett Wilson said. The class partnered with the local Walmart which donated the fixins and drinks for the boxes. Local businesses as well as students in the classes donated money to go toward the purchase of the turkeys. The class plans to expand the program next year to donate more boxes and food to local law enforcement. The Criminal Justice class has been working on the project for the past month. This is the first year Corbin Schools has had the Criminal Justice program. CIS Participates in Holiday for Heroes Campaign Corbin Intermediate School students participated in a Holiday for Heroes campaign. The school collected 259 student made cards which will be distributed to veterans and their families. The campaign is through the American Red Cross who will collect the cards and distribute them out of the local chapter in Lexington, Kentucky. It is a great project for students to join in writing Christmas cards wishing these heroes and their families a Merry Christmas and thanking them for their service, Corbin Intermediate Teacher Angela Whitus said. Some of the cards will also be distributed to local heroes. Students who know someone who has served in the military were able to submit the name and address to the school so a card could mailed to them as well.

Corbin School of Innovation Hosts December Graduation The Corbin School of Innovation held their December graduation December 17 at the Corbin Center. This year marked the 20th year anniversary of Corbin s alternative programs. The School of Innovation consists of the ASPIRE, KAPPA, Corbin Flex, and Even Start programs. Fourteen students graduated at the ceremony. New Hope Ministries Pastor Michael Addison spoke at the graduation inspiring students to continue their education and follow their dreams. Corbin Superintendent McNeel congratulated the class on being the 20th anniversary class and his last class as Corbin Superintendent. A reception was held following the ceremony for the people in attendance. CPS Celebrates Christmas Around The World Corbin Primary students celebrated Christmas Around the World this holiday season. The students studied how other countries celebrate Christmas and ended the unit of study with a special performance for family and community members. During the performances the students presented short plays on Christmas traditions in countries such as Germany, Mexico, and America. The students also sang songs that originated in each country. Christmas Around the World allows the students to learn and demonstrate their understanding beyond paper and pencil tests. The students learn to locate specific countries on a map, the customs and songs from different countries, compare and contrast holiday traditions, and convey facts about holiday traditions. Corbin Primary students participate in Christmas Around the World every year. The event also gives family members the opportunity to see their students perform.

CMS CIS Attend KYA Conference Corbin Middle and Intermediate School students attended the KYA conference in Louisville, Kentucky. The Corbin Middle School delegation was made up of 58 Corbin Middle and Intermediate School students. The students received the Delegation of Excellence Award which is awarded to delegations that do not have any disciplinary issues and complete their work in a timely manner. Corbin student Drew Beecham presided over the KYA III conference this year. Beecham was elected Governor at last years KYA conference. The group received awards for Outstanding Legislative Bill and Outstanding Premier Bill. The legislative bill was an Act to Issue Term Limits written by students Caleb Webb, Garner Chandler, Sarah Pederson, and Allie Pennington. The premier bill was an Act to Ban Abortion in Kentucky written by students Sean Simons, Austin Wise, Kyle Webb, and Noah Bonnell. Both bills were signed by the KYA Governor along with a bill regarding an Act to Require School Buses to have Backup Cameras and Sensors written by students Cara Whitus, Reagan Norvell, Hannah Baker, and Harini Tirumala. Corbin student Allison Niemeier was named an Outstanding Delegate. The KYA conference allows students to participate in a mock government and is ran like a legislative session. The students are able participate in activities such as selecting, researching, and writing bill to improve life in Kentucky. The KYA conference is a great way for students to experience firsthand the way Kentucky develop laws to govern out state. I would highly recommend this conference for any student who has an interest in debate, the law, or Kentucky Government. Corbin Middle School Teacher and KYA Sponsor Michelle Anderson said. The Corbin Middle and Intermediate School students attend the KYA conference every year. More than 1300 students from across Kentucky attended the conference this year. CMS Hosts Christmas Piano Recital Corbin Middle School held their annual Christmas Piano Concert. The students performed popular Christmas and pop songs for staff, students, and family members in attendance. The recital is part of a grade for the 18 week piano class. More than 60 students participated in the recital. The majority of students had never had a piano class before.

The Corbin Middle and Corbin High School Choirs performed their annual Christmas concert at Central Baptist Church last week. Corbin Schools Band and Choir Perform Christmas Concerts The Corbin Schools bands performed their annual Christmas Concert last week. The concert featured Christmas songs including Tell It On The Mountain, Mary Did You Know, Carol of the Snow, and a Christmas Medley. The Corbin Middle School Choir performed first followed by The Corbin High School Chamber Choir, The Corbin High School Choir, and a medley featuring the middle school and high school choirs. The middle school choir consists of 54 students and the high school choir consists of 55 students. The choir hosts two concert every year one in December and one in May. All bands fifth through high school performed at the concert at Corbin High School. The bands performed popular Christmas songs such as Carol of the Bells, Frosty, and Feliz Navidad. The bands consist of around 200 Corbin Schools students. The students have been working on the Christmas music for about three months. CIS Student Selected for All State Choir Corbin Intermediate had one choir student, Kaila Stidham, selected for All-State Choir. The audition process consisted of submitting a recording of the student matching pitches, singing a part, and singing a prepared piece. Only 215 students out of 650 were selected for the prestigious choirs. The All-State Choir will perform at Louisville, Kentucky Thursday, February 4. The Corbin Intermediate Choir also had 20 students perform in the All-Festival Choir in London in October. Almost all Corbin Intermediate Choir students auditioned for the regional choir and the top 20 were selected.

Corbin Elementary Hosts Student Showcase Corbin Elementary hosted their first Student Showcase last week. The Student Showcase gave parents an opportunity to visit Corbin Elementary and view student work. Students and staff set up displays of individual and group work throughout the school. Besides viewing the work, the parents also had the opportunity to visit with teachers and observe the different types of activities taking place in their students classes. This is an evening that recognizes our students and the hard work that they have been putting forth in their studies, Corbin Elementary Principal Chris Webb said. Our students put a lot of time and effort into their work and deserve to be recognized for it. Our teachers also worked hard to plan the event. It was awesome to see them working together to make the night successful. The purpose of the event is to recognize students for their work as well as show the innovative instructional strategies teachers have been implementing into their classrooms. All Corbin Elementary students had work displayed at the showcase and approximately 300 people attended the event. CPS Visits City Hall Corbin Primary Students visited City Hall. The students were able to tour the recycling center, the police and fire departments, and meet Corbin Mayor Willard McBurney. The students learned about fire and police safety as well as why recycling is important. The students visit City Hall every year. Schools Celebrate McNeel Corbin students bid farewell to Corbin Schools Superintendent Ed McNeel throughout December. McNeel visited each of the Corbin Schools throughout December to speak to students and attend retirement celebrations hosted by the schools. Students and staff provided words of encourage and appreciation for all McNeel has done for Corbin Schools. It is not possible for me to find the words that voice my feelings of gratitude and love for the outpouring of kindness I have received, McNeel said. McNeel addressed the staff and students at the assemblies thanking them as well as encouraging them to continue striving to be the best!

The Corbin Preschool Center hosted their annual Christmas Gala at the Corbin Center last week. Approximately 100 students participated in the gala. Each class at Corbin Preschool performed two songs for the audience. More than 400 people attended the event. Corbin Intermediate Hosts Museum Night Corbin Intermediate School hosted Museum Night before Christmas break. Museum Night is held every nine weeks at Corbin Intermediate School to showcase student work from the nine weeks period. Student work is displayed throughout the school to give parents and community members the opportunity to view the classwork and projects. This year sixth grade students hosted a Pay It Forward project during museum night. The project allowed family and community members to purchase crafts/products made by the students out of recycled materials. All proceeds were donated to various local charities selected by the students. The students set up 54 booths of products for the fair. They performed product research, marketing research, created advertisements, and sold the products at museum night. Corbin Intermediate also hosted their annual Choir Christmas Concert as part of the event. The choir performed traditional Christmas music such as Carol of the Bells, Sleigh Ride, Mary Did you Know, and A Holly Jolly Christmas. The choir consists of 50 sixth grade students. Hundreds of family and community members attended the event. Museum Night is part of Corbin Intermediate Schools project based learning initiative. All students have projects on display at the event. Merry Christmas CPC Hosts Christmas Gala Parents and family members were able to pick up crafts at the gala that students made for them while in class. The students have been working on the crafts and performances for more than a month. The purpose of the event is to celebrate Christmas with the students and their families. corbin schools
