2 Standard Search 1 2 Step 1 KEYWORDS Step 3 FILTER RESULTS Enter your keyword(s) in the Search Jobs field. Keywords are terms related to your job function, job title, skills or certification. For example, Six Sigma or Financial Analyst. You can also use these tactics to run more detailed searches: yinsert AND between two keywords that must both be found in the same job. For example, to search for online marketing jobs, use Online AND Marketing. yinsert OR between two keywords to search for either term. For example, Sales OR Marketing. Note: Jobs that do contain both keywords will be ranked highest. yuse quotation marks to search for an exact phrase. For example, Business Development. View and filter your search results. On your search results page, you ll see jobs that match your search. If you want to narrow down your results, uncheck categories from the Refine My Results sidebar to remove irrelevant postings. TIP Check your search results before deselecting categories, so you don t miss out on any great leads. 3 TIP Job titles often vary. Try different variations for best results. For example, a posting may use Account Manager or Account Executive to describe the same role. Step 2 LOCATION Provide a location and select a radius. Location specifies where you d like to work. Provide a zip code or city, state. Avoid using abbreviations or city names (NY, NY). Instead, use criteria like or New York, NY. Use the miles dropdown menu to indicate how far you are willing to travel from the location you entered. TIP The location search text box auto-completes your entries. If you do not see your area appear in the autocomplete drop-down, consider a broader location. Page 2
3 Saved Searches Store up to 10 searches at any time from your search results page and receive alerts with matching jobs. SAVING A SEARCH 1. Click on Save this search from the My Search section. 2. Name your search and select an frequency. 3. Click Save to finish. FINDING YOUR SAVED SEARCHES 1. From the Home page or the Find Jobs page, click on the blue Saved Searches menu located next to the green Search button. 2. To run a search, select a title from the dropdown menu. MANAGING YOUR SAVED SEARCHES 1. Click on the Saved Searches menu located to the right of the green Search button. 2. Click on Manage your searches from the dropdown menu. 3. Edit, delete or adjust your criteria and alert frequency, as needed. 4. Once you are finished, click on the blue Save Changes button. Page 3
4 Advanced Search Our Advanced Search lets you perform a highly-customized search. It s useful if you are only looking for a very specific job. To use Advanced Search, click on the Advanced Search link located under the green Search button at the top of the page. These are the Advanced Search categories: y Keywords Terms related to your job, job title or skills. For example, Six Sigma or Financial Analyst. y Location Indicates where you d like to work. Enter a zip code or city, state. To view jobs located outside US/Canada, select International. To view jobs that require working remotely or traveling, select Virtual/ Travel. When using an exact location, select a distance from the dropdown menu to indicate how far you are willing to travel. If you would rather see jobs across multiple states or Canadian provinces, click on the Region link next to the miles dropdown menu and select an area. y Ladder Your Ladder will be selected by default. Premium members can select multiple Ladders to search across different functional areas. y Sector Indicates the field you want to work in. y Years of Experience Indicates how many total years of experience you have in your field. y Level Indicates your desired job level. y Date Posted Indicates how long ago a job was posted on TheLadders. SEARCH PREFERENCES Use this section to control how your search results appear. Click on the small blue box next to Search Preferences to expand the section for more options. y Match Select All Keywords Entered to search for every keyword used. Select Any Keywords Entered to search for one or more of your keywords (recommended). y Search Choose whether you want to search an entire job description (recommended) or just job titles for the keywords entered. y Sort by Sort by Date to place the freshest job postings at the top of the list. Or sort by Relevance, which shows your closest keyword matches first. y Show Search only for open positions or both open and closed jobs. y Display Select an option to see short or full descriptions in your search results. y Include Uncheck this box to hide jobs you ve already viewed. y Save This Search Save your search criteria to begin receiving alerts with matching jobs. Simply name your Advanced Search and select an frequency. TIP For best results, leave all options checked to avoid removing any relevant jobs. You can filter your results after you search, using the Refine My Results sidebar. Page 4
5 Advanced Search Tips When entering multiple keywords, you can also use the following tactics to search. yboolean operators can be used in combination yboolean operators can be written in upper and lower case The following operators can also be used: y - = NOT y & = AND y word + word = word AND word yif no operator separates two words, the search will be the same as a search using OR between those words. yto use more than one Boolean operator, use parentheses for grouping. For example: Sales AND (director OR executive) = (sales AND director) OR (sales AND executive) yuse NOT to exclude keywords from searches. For example, to search for direct sales positions, but exclude consulting roles, use Direct Sales NOT Consulting. yuse parentheses to conduct complex searches combining two or more tactics like AND, OR, NOT and quotation marks. For example, to search for a job that includes sales and software, but not Java, use ( Sales AND Software ) NOT Java. ynote that this search application does not support the Wildcard feature at this time. For example: Manag* will not yield a search for manager OR management. Use Boolean operators for combining search strings based on a single word root. ydo not use the periods in abbreviations. For example, use VP for Vice President rather than V.P. yto restrict your search to a field, use the field name followed by a colon and the search term. For example, title:manager will search for job titles with the word manager in them. This is the same result as using advanced search and searching on only titles. y Several types of field searches are possible. A search for fulldescription: spanish AND title:director will yield all the jobs where Spanish language is a requirement with the word Director in the title. TIP For best results, remember to put a parenthesis on both ends of your search statement. Page 5
