2 ABOUT THE The Exhibition highlights unrivalled technology and inventions developed or refined by the Romans that set them apart from the rest of the world and which continue to influence the way we live today. The Exhibition begins with an introductory Roman Time Line REPUBLIC TO EMPIRE Themes MILITARY GENIUS & WAR MACHINES ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME BUILDING ROME ENTERTAINMENT & LIFESTYLE Archaeological finds and historic texts have allowed the Florentine Niccolai Teknoart Artisans to research and reconstruct ancient technology using the same materials and techniques that the Romans used thousands of years ago. 3 ABOUT THE MACHINES The objective has been to create interactivity between the visitor and the machines that have marked the history of the machines evolution whilst highlighting the mechanical principal that govern their operation. The up close and personal interaction provides enjoyment and education for adults and children alike, and allows insight to concepts and practical application suggesting parallels with today s modern technological world. The machines and models in the Exhibition are the creations of Artisans of Florence, Niccolai-Teknoart SNC (Firenze), who assisted by close reference to Vitruvius De Architectura, have remained true to the original concepts and materials used in Ancient Rome. The advancement in computer and software technology in recent years has enabled the artisans to enhance and elaborate original drawings, reproducing them to scale and thus creating working machines.

7 THEME II ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME The development of the Roman Empire depended on the roads. The Roman road system spanned more than 400,000 km of roads, including over 80,500 km of paved roads. When Rome reached the height of its power, no fewer than 29 great military highways radiated from Rome. Hills cut through, deep ravines filled in, rivers were bridged, mountains were tunnelled and they were built to last, evidenced by some still in use today.

9 THEME III BUILDING ROME This section of the Exhibition contains the Roman Empire machines and devices that contributed to a phase of massive construction and industrialization, which may reasonably be considered, the prelude to the industrial revolution.

11 THEME IV LIFESTYLE & ENTERTAINMENT For wealthy Romans life was good. They enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle with luxurious furnishings, surrounded by slaves and servants. Poorer Romans, however, could only dream of such lifestyle but could still relax in public baths and be entertained by popular sporting events in the Colosseum, events such as gladiators fighting, chariot racing or the slaughter of beasts, criminals and Christians.

13 SPECIAL FEATURE THE ROOM OF THE FAUN The House of the Faun (Italian Casa del Fauno ) was built during the 2 nd century BC and was one of the largest and most impressive, private residences in Pompeii. It housed many great art treasures. A luxurious, aristocratic house from the period of the Roman Republic which reflects this period better than most archaeological evidence found even in Rome.
