3 Our Vision The high school learning experience, post-secondary opportunity, higher education degree structures, and workforce development are fundamentally transformed

4 What is CareerConnect? WHAT WE DO: Denver Public Schools CareerConnect offers students relevant, project-based courses while connecting them with partner companies and higher education institutions for hands-on workplace experiences and mentoring. The program equips graduates with high-demand skills and leads to opportunities for continued education and careers in Colorado s highest-growth, highest-opportunity industries. GROWTH: We currently serve more than 6,000 students in more than 70 different programs across almost every high school in DPS. Our growth over the past two year is summarized as follows: 50% program enrollment growth in 2 years 5 focus STEM industries for growth: Engineering, Biomedical, Tech, Advanced Manufacturing, and Finance 9 focus high schools for growth: JFK, Lincoln, West HS Campus, CEC, Manual, High Tech, MLK, East, and GW 2,039 students in our new STEM pathways this year More than $11M in federal and corporate grants in the past 2 years enabling new facilities, new learning resources Strong support U.S. DOL, Denver companies and colleges, DPS leadership,

Graduation Rates Post-Secondary Readiness Students participating in CareerConnect graduate at far higher rates and demonstrate significantly increased engagement due to project-based learning. 30 percentage point difference in probability of graduation. Equip DPS graduates with rigorous preparation for the workforce and higher education. This has major social and economic returns. ROI and Sustainability Annual operating costs to DPS are relatively low for a very high return; state and federal reimbursements cover a significant share of operating costs Denver s/colorado s Human Capital Pipeline Denver/Colorado can lead in human capital with a highly skilled and highly educated workforce

17 Adapting the Swiss model for Denver Swiss Model Standard high school plus career advising through 9 th grade Option for flex year between 9 th and 10 th 3-4 year apprenticeship: typically 4 days work, 1 day school and training by Year 13 Completion with a VET Diploma with options that transfer to baccalaureate programs Proposed Denver Model Standard high school plus CareerConnect through 11 th 2-year residency: 3 days work, 2 days school in Years Completion of an AA/AS Associate s Degree that will transfer to baccalaureate programs 17

18 CareerResidency pilot: overview Four industries, select high-skill positions: Advanced Manufacturing (General Technician), Tech (IT Specialist), Banking (TBD), Medical High-demand industries; high-skill; high-wage occupations Two phases: Phase 1 is planning and implementation (1 year); Phase 2 is pilot implementation (2 Years) One milestone checkpoint: T+12 months confirm plan and needs for Phase 2 (years 2 and 3 of pilot) Targeted program launch: Pre-Residency Summer Module and feeder program: Summer 2016 CareerResidency (intensive modules): school year First CareerResidency graduates (with associates degree): May

19 CareerResidency: key features CareerResidency Summer Module: Structured internship program feeding into CareerResidency Beginning in the summer between 10 th and 11 th grade, pursue a six-week internship that focuses on career exploration and soft skills development, in addition to work-place experience Also incorporates extensive recruitment and screening to residency; program is necessary to prepare students and build pipeline CareerResidency (intensive modules): Leading to an associates degree and/or industry certificates Starting in 12 th grade, students spend 3 days learning in the workplace and getting paid for doing productive work! At end of 12 th grade, students earn a high school diploma and industry credentials, along with college credit (option to enter workforce or continue towards associates degree) By Year 13 (or potentially Year 14 in the future), earn associates degree with workforce demand AND credit articulation to a bachelors degree (option to entire workforce or pursue four-year degree) 19
