3 What is CTE? Career and Technical Education (CTE) is a broad system of courses that encompass a variety of challenging pathways that reflect our changing global economy. CTE programs provide high school students with careeroriented instruction which enables them to easily transition into the workplace or postsecondary education. Louisiana high schools offer more than 200 courses and over 50 Industry Based Certifications. 3

4 Objectives of CTE Programs Meet the challenge of not only providing students with a high school education, but effectively engaging them during high school so they continue to postsecondary education to become global citizens with innovative and entrepreneurial attitudes. Integrate rigorous academics with relevant, work-based learning and technical content that aligns with current, emerging and projected labor market needs.

5 CTE Delivery Charter schools can develop differentiating CTE strategies that support and expand upon their academic strategies. All CTE courses are aligned to common core standards and internationally benchmarked Courses offered through CTE are aligned with postsecondary instruction and offer dual enrolment or articulation credit 5

In 2010, Louisiana had a low annual median income: $30,172 for women $44,380 for men Louisiana s growing industries pay higher than average salaries and offer immediate opportunities for employment and advancement CTE programs provide high school graduates with the tools to pursue further education compete in a global and knowledge-based economy 6

8 CTE and Louisiana s Key Industries Energy/Oil & Gas Production and Refining Louisiana is a major producer and transporter of domestic energy. There are some 23,000 jobs in this industry in Louisiana. Statewide Average Salaries in this field range from $60-$75K. Specialized Healthcare New Orleans is a regional hub for health services and biosciences activity. Key developments include approved LSU and VA hospitals, which will create 6,000 jobs and $1.26 billion in annual regional economic impact. 9 CTE and Louisiana s Key Industries Biotech + Clean Technology The clean-tech industry is gaining momentum nationwide, and Louisiana is poised to play a major role in its development. The state could develop up to 90,000 new jobs over the next two decades in sustainable industries. 10 The Career Path of One CTE Student The student decides to pursue a Health Science CTE Program. She takes some of the following classes to meet AOC requirements: Anatomy, Physiology, Biology II, Speech, Chemistry, and Calculus She has the opportunity to accumulate dual enrollment credit with a community or technical college. 1 0

11 Having Completed the Requirements, This Student Could: Become a Medical Technician Access to approx. 50,000 jobs in this field in Louisiana Average of $25,000- $45,000/year. 12 CTE in Our System of Schools CTE is a necessary component in a system of schools serving students with diverse interests. It can: Merge the objectives of college and career preparation and readiness. Leverage the resources of universities, community and technical colleges, and industry partners. Provide students with additional tools for success beyond high school. 12

13 Why Should Schools Prioritize CTE? Foster Diverse Interests CTE helps schools to recognize and support diverse interests and learning styles High School Graduation Rates 90.18% of CTE students graduate from high school compared to the average national freshman graduation rate of 74.9% Postsecondary/College Education 70 % of CTE students continue to postsecondary education, compared to an average state target of 58%. Career Readiness By 2018, it is projected that one-third of jobs will require postsecondary education, and nearly all will require realworld skills that can be mastered through CTE. 13
