1 Students Name: UUID#: Description of Program: Bachelor of Professional Studies Major in Professional Studies Concentration: Emergency Management 218 Brister Hall memphis.edu/univcoll The interdisciplinary Emergency Management concentration is designed for students with a diversity of backgrounds and interest in applying that background to emergency management, community resilience to disaster, environmental hazards mitigation, emergency management response, and business continuity/disaster recovery. It will address the following critical knowledge elements: a) the physical and social dimensions of disasters through combining knowledge from various physical, social, and applied disciplines, b) the intersection of public policy to disaster risk, response, and mitigation, c) the intersection of the private, nonprofit, and governmental sectors and how this effects emergency preparedness, mitigation, and recovery, d) sustainable development, planning for and response to extreme events and change in our physical and human landscapes; and e) communication dynamics and persuasive communication in emergencies. Program Summary I. General Education hours II. Coordinated Study 33 hours III. University College Requirements 9 hours IV. General Electives hours Minimum Required for Graduation: 120 hours* *Students must complete at least 60 hours from a 4 year institution. *Students must complete at least 42 hours of upper-division credit (3000 or 4000-level). *Students must complete at least 30 of the last 60 hours through the University of Memphis. * Students must complete at least 9 graded hours in the major at the University of Memphis.
2 Detailed Program Summary I. General Education (35-41 hours) Students must complete the hours of general education requirements as outlined in the attached general education grid. Please refer to the General Education website at for specific requirements. Students with majors in University College are exempt from the History general education requirements if they completed one year of History in high school II. Coordinated Study (33 hours) Many upper-division (3000/4000-level) courses have prerequisites that must be met prior to being permitted to register for those courses. You are responsible for knowing and satisfying all course prerequisites. For specific information about courses and the prerequisites they may have, please view course descriptions at: Some (not all) prerequisites are listed below. Many courses also require permits from the department that teaches the course. For example, SWRK and CJUS courses will always need permits from those respective departments. University College staff cannot issue permits for courses taught in other departments. ALL 3000/4000 level classes taught by the College of Business (ACCT, ECON, FIR, MGMT, MKTG) require a permit; students must request a permit online at: Group A. These courses are designed to broaden a student s knowledge of significant themes in social, political, and religious history. Only specifically designated courses will meet this requirement. For a complete list of courses: Group B. IV. UMdegree Senior Project (3 hours) The senior project is a student s culminating experience or capstone designed to synthesize and integrate the content of a student s program of study. The senior project is intended to fuse the two or more academic areas that comprise the student s coordinated study (major) into an academically-relevant example of scholarship. The senior project is completed during a student s final semester. ALL sections of UNIV 4995 are taught online. Students will be assigned to a specific section based on the topic they select. General Electives (37-43 hours) May be chosen to bring the total number of hours to 120 with a minimum of 42 upper division hours. Possible Minors Students pursuing a B.P.S. with a concentration in Emergency Management may be able to complete a minor in a discipline of the student s choice. Experiential Learning Credit Students may be granted credit for college level knowledge and understanding related to the student s major area of study and gained from work experience, life experience, or non-college instruction. The student who wants an assessment of such learning prepares a portfolio that describes and documents the learning. Portfolios are assessed by faculty who teach in that area. Assessment by portfolio is reserved for knowledge and competencies which do not readily fit into the credit by examination procedures described above.
