The minor must be declared no later than the student s third semester of enrollment. No CAS requirement for a capstone course One designated capstone course in the major discipline 9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE: This curriculum change is needed to bring the program in compliance with the new graduation requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) B.A. and B.S. degrees. Beginning fall 2015, all students in baccalaureate programs in CAS are required to have a minor unless their program is specifically exempt from the requirement (Architecture, Visual Arts, and Music Entrepreneurship). All students are also required to complete a capstone course in their major. The Department of Sociology and Rural Studies has added SOC 284 Investigating the Social World as a required course for majors. This course will help students better prepare for upper division courses. Sociology and Rural Studies has also added a Capstone course as a required course reducing the number of SOC/ANTH electives. The redesign of the secondary teacher education curriculum was developed based on the directive from the South Dakota Board of Regents that all institutions develop a yearlong residency experience for student teachers. Related to that initiative, the faculty has created a competencybased model of teacher preparation, which the proposed curriculum reflects in its series of courses (which will include lab and fieldbased experiences), each of which will support students proficiency in relation to identified outcomes. Those outcomes are based on the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium s Core Teaching Standards. The integrated approach is developmentally responsive to the needs of the teacher candidates, and the department has consulted both partners in PK12 schools and various programs across the campus that will be affected by these changes.
