1 Description of Program: Bachelor of Professional Studies Major in Professional Studies Concentration: Technology Management Services 218 Brister Hall memphis.edu/univcoll Advising guidelines in Technology Management Services are designed for those who wish to gain knowledge of a technical nature while at the same gaining skills in management, organizational relations, and communications; their knowledge of contexts within which the management of technology fits; their understanding of workplace issues that can effect productivity; and their ability to manage diversity in the workforce. Students pursuing this degree program combine classes from a technical field such as, but not limited to: architecture, computer science, engineering, environmental studies, manufacturing, chemistry, biology, physics, earth sciences and math with course work in management, communications and organizational relations. General Electives hours Minimum Required for Graduation: 120 hours* *Students must complete at least 60 hours from a 4 year institution. *Students must complete at least 42 hours of upper-division credit (3000 or 4000-level). *Students must complete at least 30 of the last 60 hours through the University of Memphis. * Students must complete at least 9 graded hours in the major at the University of Memphis. *UNIV 3900 Experiential Learning Credit may be granted credit for college level knowledge and understanding related to the student s major area of study and gained from work experience, life experience, or non-college instruction. The student who wants an assessment of such learning prepares a portfolio that describes and documents the learning. Portfolios are assessed by faculty who teach in that area. Assessment by portfolio is reserved for knowledge and competencies which do not readily fit into the credit by examination procedures described above. 2 Detailed Program Summary I. General Education Students must complete the hours of general education requirements as outlined in the attached general education grid. Please refer to the General Education website at for specific requirements. Students with majors in University College are exempt from the History general education requirements if they completed one year of History in high school II. Coordinated Study Many upper-division (3000/4000-level) courses have prerequisites that must be met prior to being permitted to register for those courses. You are responsible for knowing and satisfying all course prerequisites. For specific information about courses and the prerequisites they may have, please view course descriptions at: Some (not all) prerequisites are listed below. Many courses also require permits from the department that teaches the course. For example, SWRK and CJUS courses will always need permits from those respective departments. University College staff cannot issue permits for courses taught in other departments. ALL 3000/4000 level classes taught by the College of Business (ACCT, ECON, FIR, MGMT, MKTG) require a permit; students must request a permit online at: Technology Concentration: 24 hours (12 hours must be upper division) This includes courses taken from such departments as Engineering Engineering Technology Manufacturing Engineering Architecture Mathematics Computer Science Biology Chemistry Physics Earth Sciences and other approved courses. It is assumed that students will take all technology concentration courses from one area. Students wishing to take a combination of classes from the above areas need permission of the University College Dean. A limited number of classes from Management Information Systems (MIS/ISDS) is allowed but cannot make up the entire content of the technology concentration. Students wishing to pursue a career in information technology or management information systems should major in these areas.

Any UNIV or UNIV course, CSED 4300, CSED 4205, PHIL 3514 Students complete a total of 6 credit hours in a University College thematic studies course(s) of their choosing. These courses are designed to broaden a student s knowledge of significant themes in social, political, and religious history. Only specifically designated courses will meet this requirement. Students can complete one 6 credit hour class or two 3 credit hour courses. For a complete list of courses: Senior Project (3 hours) The senior project is a student s culminating experience or capstone designed to synthesize and integrate the content of a student s program of study. The senior project is intended to fuse the two or more academic areas that comprise the student s coordinated study (major) into an academically-relevant example of scholarship. Students will complete a thesis, task-based, or artistic project on a topic of their choice with approval of their senior project instructor. The senior project is completed during a student s final semester. ALL sections of UNIV 4995 are taught online. Students will be assigned to a specific section based on the topic they select. IV. This tool reflects all changes to a student's academic record, and is used in determining whether or not a student has successfully completed all graduation requirements.
