2 Protecting Spaces 1,050,000 square km (about 10.5%) of Canada is protected (42 National Parks) The Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada protects 118,000 square km of wildlife habitat as wildlife areas or bird sanctuaries 4.5% of the land in Newfoundland and Labrador is considered to be protected (7.4% of the Island and 3.3% of Labrador)

5 Types of Protected Areas (Federal) National Parks of Canada These parks are representative natural areas of Canadian significance. There are currently three in Newfoundland and Labrador - Terra Nova National Park - Gros Morne National Park - Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve - Mealy Mountains of Labrador (proposed)

12 Types of Protected Areas (Federal) National Historic Sites of Canada These sites protect and celebrate nationally significant places, people, and events Examples of them in Newfoundland and Labrador - Cape Spear (Oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland, 1836) - Signal Hill (Commemorates defence of St. John's) - L Anse aux Meadows (Only authenticated Viking settlement in North America)

Can include wetlands, estuaries, islands, or other coastal areas. They are protected from dumping, undersea mining, oil and gas exploration, and development. Traditional fishing activities are permitted but managed

18 Types of Protected Areas (Provincial) Wilderness Reserves Wilderness reserves are large protected areas (greater than 1,000 km 2 ) that are designed to protect significant natural features and landscapes Hunting, fishing, canoeing, and hiking are allowed but need a permit There are two wilderness reserves in Newfoundland: - The Avalon - The Bay du Nord

21 Types of Protected Areas (Provincial) Ecological Reserves Ecological reserves are protected areas of less than 1,000 km 2 smaller than wilderness reserves that are created for two main purposes: To protect representative examples of ecosystems or ecoregions To protect unique, rare, or endangered plants, animals, or other elements of our natural heritage There are 17 ecological reserves in this province

25 Types of Protected Areas (Provincial) Provincial Parks There are 32 parks in the province. They are mainly used for recreation but they also provide some protection for natural features and species You are allowed to camp at 13 of them, including La Manche and Butter Pot Park

26 Types of Protected Areas (Provincial) Wildlife Reserves Wildlife reserves protect the habitat of a particular wildlife species. The size of the reserves depends on the habitat needs of the intended species There are 3 in our province: - Middle Ridge (Caribou) - Big Barasway (Piping Plover) - Little Grand Lake (Newfoundland Marten)

27 Types of Protected Areas (Provincial) Wildlife Parks The provinces only wildlife park is the Salmonier Nature Park. Established for educational purposes it has now become a tourist destination

28 Types of Protected Areas (Provincial) Crown/Public Reserves The province can set aside areas of crown land for a wide variety of reason in crown or public reserves. The Glover Island Public Reserve is the only crown reserve in the province. It was created to protect the Newfoundland Marten.

Biodiversity Protection each species is valuable Enjoyment - recreation Education park interpretive programs, build awareness, understanding and support for conservation Economic Benefits tourism and job creation Natural Experiences being one with nature, personal and spiritual growth Scientific Research study plants, animals, ecosystems, interactions

30 What can you do to Support Protected Areas? By taking personal responsibility to educate ourselves about the issues and actions that affect our environment and our future, we can be part of the solution Take a walk, hike, or boat ride. Use the parks that are made available to you

31 Act Responsibly in a Protected Area Stick to authorized roads, walkways, and trails Respect the behaviour of wild animals to keep you and them safe (a fed animal is a dead animal) Avoid restricted areas Take out what you take in (aka no littering) Participate in interpretive activities Become more informed about protected areas to give every species a brighter future
