Temporary Recruitment Services 10 th June 2015
Introductions Adam Johnson Account Manager Charlotte Woodward Strategic Sourcing Director Kathryn Doe Manager
The Candidate Landscape
At a Glance EMPLOYMENT million people in work, 143,000 more than last quarter and 617,000 more than this time last year. ZERO-HOUR CONTRACTS 697,000 people employed under zero-hour contracts, representing 2.3% of all in employment. This is an increase of 111,000 from last year FLEXIBLE WORKING Flexible working showing no sign of slowing down, demand not only from working parents, but flexible hours and home working increasingly popular with all including Gen Y and satisfying work/life balance. UNEMPLOYMENT 1.86 million people out of work, down 25.8% on last year. 5.7% of the economically active population is unemployed. JOBSEEKERS Falling for the 28 th consecutive month, there are 791,000 people claiming jobseekers allowance, down from 380,500 last year, and now just 12,800 higher than the pre-recession level. Jobless rate at 40 year low!
Economic Backdrop Earnings Up Annual Earnings before bonuses look to increase by 1.6% in 2015 Private sector earnings growth rate easing marginally to 2.0% Public sector growth rate is expected to rise slightly to 0.7% The UK economy grew by 0.5% in the final quarter of 2014, and by 2.5% as a whole; the fastest annual rate since The quarterly rate however is slightly slower than usual, in part due to the impact of lower investment in the oil and gas industries. Inflation Down British Sterling has strengthened against the Euro, increasing by 11 cents since Jan 2015, now standing at 1.00 E1.39. UK in negative inflation (short term deflation) UK labour productivity, as measured by output per hour, fell by 0.2% Q3-Q
Workforce Trends Permanent More than 90% of employers plan to retain or increase the number of their permanent workers; 92% in the short term, and 97% in the medium term. Employers identified technical and engineering as primary areas for permanent skills shortages, highlighting driving and distribution as a risk area. Wage recovery growth at fastest rate since Temporary Nearly all employers plan to retain or increase the number of agency workers; 98% in the short term. 6.5% of all UK employees are temporary workers, down 10,000 on last year. A mismatch of skills continues to provide demand in the UK. Temporary workers will continue to earn more than permanent employees. Availability of candidates dropped for (for 28 consecutive months)
A Changing Candidate Landscape The way people find information online is changing - our major life decisions increasingly start with digital search - Trip Advisor, Match, Zoopla, Glassdoor Over 60% of candidates Will check out a potential employer on social media. 9 out of 10 jobseekers say they will use their mobile device for job search in the next 12 months. Today s jobseekers are frustrated by a bad or complex digital experience. Mobiles dominate the late night and early morning, PCs the working day and tablets the early evening this affects the exposure of certain sites, and therefore job adverts, as only 25% of companies utilise both mobile and desktop browsers. 46% say that company reputation has a big impact on whether to accept a job 83% say reviews impact where they apply
Attracting Quality Talent Our Challenges Not turning up for assignments/interviews Accepting job offers and then shopping around Dictating terms Demanding upper quartile rates and salaries Lack of flexibility Slow to decide on job offers Lack of engagement, loyalty and commitment Pulling out of assignments with little or no notice
Overcoming The Challenges Is application process quick and easy to complete? How many CVs do you really need to shortlist per job? Are interviews for temporary jobs really necessary? Does your recruitment process allow you to move quickly to hire great candidates? Is pre-interview testing/assessment essential? Could you hire on personality/cultural fit and teach skills?
