1 Lesson Title: Comparing Confucius s Analects to Character Education in the U.S. Class and Grade level(s): 7 th and 8 th grade English Language Learners Goals and Objectives The student will be able to: Compare the Analects of Confucius to Character Traits. Time required/class periods needed one class period Primary source bibliography Other resources used Character Traits worksheet Required materials/supplies Photocopies of definitions of the character traits Photocopies of the Confucius/Character traits worksheets Vocabulary Analects, honesty, trustworthiness, empathy sympathy, loyalty, responsibility, respect, compassion, perseverance, integrity, contentment, perseverance, integrity, kindness, courage, optimism, assertiveness, generosity, humility, self-control, self-motivation, appreciation, cooperation, fairness, forgiveness, patience
2 Procedure 1. Teacher will talk about the different character traits focused on in Character Ed. (e.g., respect, kindness, compassion, empathy, loyalty) and their definitions. 2. The teacher will lead a discussion with the students giving examples of at least five of the character traits. 3. The teacher will write this quote on the board: What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others, Confucius, The Analects. Ask the students to identify a character trait that this quote would match. Explain to students that the quote encouraged the Chinese to treat one another with respect. Ask the students if they ve heard anything like this before (Do unto others etc.). 4. Students will log on to computer and go to the site: 5. After reading the quotes and words of Confucius, students will identify the influence of these quotes on their own school/community 6. Teacher will hand out worksheet. Students will search website for quotations and match quotations to specific character traits. Students will put the quotes in their own words. Assessment/evaluation Students will be considered successful if they can fill out the worksheet, and match the sayings of Confucius to appropriate character traits.
3 Character Trait Definitions 1 : Honesty Truthfulness; sincerity Trustworthiness Reliability, dependability Empathy -- Understanding the feelings of another person Sympathy Identifying with and sharing another s feelings, situations and motives Loyalty faithfulness to a person or ideal Responsibility Accepting personal accountability; acting honestly without the need for continual guidance Respect Honoring others with courtesy and consideration Compassion Sensitivity to the needs of others coupled with active support Perseverance Keeping to a course of action, belief or purpose, without giving way Integrity Consistent adherence to a moral code or standard of moral values Contentment Feelings of satisfaction and a sense of well being Kindness Acting humanely with consideration of and compassion for others Courage The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face fear,difficulty, danger, pain, et., with resolve; to act in accordance with one s beliefs, in spite of criticism Optimism- The belief that goodness will prevail; cheerful hopefulness Assertiveness Taking action with confidence and respect Generosity Sharing unselfishly one s time and resources Humility Modesty, a lack of pride and ego Self-Control Managing one s emotions, desires, or actions and respecting the boundaries of others Self-Motivation Doing what you do through an internal drive rather than because others want you to do it Appreciation The recognition of the quality, value and significance of people, animals and things Cooperation Working together to reach a common goal Fairness Treating people without favoritism Forgiveness Extending grace to yourself or others Patience Remaining calm through trying situations 1 From the LSR7 Character Education Program
