1 EASTERN NEBRASKA LICENSED ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES What is Assisted Living? Assisted living facilities offer a housing alternative for older adults who may need help with dressing, bathing, eating, and toileting, but do not require the intensive medical and nursing care provided in nursing homes. Assisted living facilities may be part of a retirement community, nursing home, senior housing complex, or may stand- alone. (Source: Eldercare Locator, U.S. Administration on Aging) What Services are Provided? Residents of assisted living facilities usually have their own units or apartment. In addition to having a support staff and providing meals, most assisted living facilities also offer at least some of the following services: (Source: Eldercare Locator, U.S. Administration on Aging) Health care management and monitoring Help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and eating Housekeeping and laundry Medication reminders and/or help with medications Recreational activities Security Transportation What is the Cost for Assisted Living? In most cases, assisted living residents pay a regular monthly rent, and then pay additional fees for the services they get. The term "assisted living" may mean different things in different facilities. Not all assisted living facilities provide the same services. It is important that you contact the facility and make sure they can meet your needs. The federal Medicare program does not cover the costs of assisted living facilities or the care they provide. (Source: Medicare.gov) Aged/Disabled Medicaid Waiver: You may be eligible for Medicaid Waiver financial assistance in paying for assisted living services if you are aged, blind, or disabled, require nursing home levels of care, and meet the program guidelines. If you are considering applying for Medicaid financial assistance, please contact the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services office ( ) to see if you are eligible. You must then verify with the facility that it is Medicaid Waiver certified and what are the facility guidelines for payment. Some facilities require that you pay privately for a period of time before they will accept Medicaid as payment. Not all Assisted Living facilities are Medicaid certified.
